I'm assuming the animals can't open and close the doors themselves, so the doors are kept open over night? I would imagine it must be cold in there then, and windy, and snowy? Depending on where happygirl lives, but she's ignoring MomNeedsVacay, so I guess we'll never know!

Good point. Maybe there's a dog door that the dog can use, but the other doors are closed. Hopefully there are doors that can close and it isn't something like a pole barn with open sides - that really wouldn't be sufficient shelter to keep a dog warm in the winter.
My barn is "closed" and yet not only can my barn cats come and go, but my neighbors weener dog has found a way in on occassion. I THINK he nudges the bottom of the sliding door up and slips under it....or maybe the cats are letting him in. Of course, a mastiff/St Bernard is quite a bit larger, but I am sure one could figure out a way to allow a dog to come and go without compromising the weather resisting integrity of the structure.
Admirable that so many people have a vested interest in a stranger's dog, but it is obvious that the only reason y'all want to know where she lives is to continue brow beating her for her animal care tactics. It's part St. Bernard...he's fine in the barn.
Note...I personally would sooner die than to have my dogs live outside, regardless of breed. All three of my gang live in the house and sleep on or around my bed. That's just how I roll.

I just find it strange that she doesn't want to share this information... I have not brow beaten or said anything mean---I think a large, winter-breed dog is probably fine outside...but I'm just curious where she lives... whats the big deal?

Of course you are just curious. Where IS that angel smilie.... AH! It's not strange at all...it's none of our business. She lives someplace where it gets cold enough to freeze a water bucket. She got some great advice about how to fix that. Move it along folks.

She told us the breed of the dog, but no insight to the type of coat. Does the dog have a St. Bernard or Mastiff coat? Mastiff's have a short coat like a smooth dachshund. We are the same with our dogs, they sleep in the warmth and comfort of the house.

I don't think there is anything wrong with caring about an animal you don't know. Are we only suppose to care about our own?
Just because you can survive in the freezing elements doesn't mean it's comfortable. Freezing (or even cold slushy water) can't be comfortable to drink, either.
