Frozen dog water

That's why I asked if you had some kind of shelter for the dog.. There used to be a time when people never kept their dogs inside.. They had insulated and/or heated dog houses.. No assumption here - just a question.. Glad to see there are heated bowls and such available..

I guess I will bring in my cows and horse as well. They don't have nearly as much fur as my dog. It should be intersting tonight.

this just happened to me the other night. I was so mad at my DH because he went out late for a smoke and our cat must have gotten outside and he didn't notice. Poor thing was scratching on the door in teh morning when I got up. Boy, was DH in trouble!

Do they have a BARN or other shelter? And, where does the dog sleep? You haven't answered that question. Outside? Inside?

CAnn I'm sorry I didn't see you had asked, My dogs has a dog house and a barn with lots of hay and straw to lay in. As do they Cows and horse.

Then we're both horse owners, and we both know there's a huge difference between horses and dogs. I'm assuming you have a stable, which is great for the horses in this weather. Our llamas love this weather. It's my experience that dogs don't do so well in freezing weather.

As soon as cows and horses are domesticated by humans as indoor companion pets, this will be an accurate analogy.

Well if you have a soccer ball floating on the top of a five gallon bucket so it won't freeze, there's not a whole heck of a lot of room for the dog to get in there and drink. Plus, if you dog is skittish, s/he may be scared and not drink because of it.

As a former farm girl, I know you can probably go to a feed/ranch supply store or even a pet store and buy a heated water dish so the water won't freeze.

They make heated buckets/bowls for dogs just like horses. All of our stock tanks have de-icers in them (with the cords covered in heavy duty outdoor conduit to prevent chewers from getting the cord).

A ball in the bucket works in theory because the ball moves the water. Moving water is less likely to freeze.

Lastly, GATORADE or a 1/2 scoop of powdered electrolytes will both keep the water from freezing and encourage your dog to drink more. The salt in the electrolytes lowers the freezing point of the water thereby making it have to get MUCH MUCH colder than below freezing for the water to freeze. Works in the buckets in my barn.

I;m not using a soccer ball for the water. Someone suggested using ping pong balls to keep the water from freezing, but then realized they might swallow them. I simply asked if you could use a bigger balls like soccer balls.


I want to thank everyone for your viewpoints. It's clear that we all don't agree with how to take care of ours pets. I do agree that we all love our pets, and want nothing bet the best for them
