Front of Monorail?!?

I don't think they have allowed front passengers since the tragic event that took place a few years ago. 2008 or 2009? I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

We miss this too, was always something we looked forward to doing at least once per trip... yes we have kids, but we are just big kids ourselves!

We were able to do it twice before and still have the card that was given to my DD. I understand why they are not allowing this to happen. It is sad for all.

I've heard that you can still do it at DL, but not at WDW. It's really too bad because it is quite a treat. I wish they would bring it back.

no, can't ride up front. Accident was July 5th 2009 at approx 2am. If you want more info, search the boards or do a google search.
edit: and it's not coming back and likely never will. The NTSB classified the monorails as transportation rather than an attraction thus no one is allowed to sit with the driver.

Then I wonder how DL gets away with it, since now it is transportation also (going to the hotel)

Only has two stops and is a fraction of the distance as Wdw. Also doesn't near the speeds of the Wdw monorails I'm assuming also. Plus the Wdw track has switchbeams and more complexities to it.

yes it is still an attraction at DL

We rode in the Front of the Monorail at DL in June 2009. The Pilot told us the Disneyland one is considered a Historic Landmark will never be modified with more spots. I had inquired if an additional stop would be added as the Hotels expand, etc.

I talked to a CM who was a supervisor on the monorail at WDW and he told me(believe it or not) the unfortunate accident wasn't the reason they stopped the rides up front, he said it actually stopped a short time before the accident and the reason was there were arguments and actual fights occuring among guest who wanted to ride up front. So according to him this was the real reason. As I said believe it or not, but if they are still allowing it in DL it makes the story believeable.

Not true. In fact, the family of four that was in the train at the time of the accident could have ridden up front if they had wanted. Fortunately for them they did not. Riding up front was available right up until that last train.

We have some great video of our family (2 DD's) riding in the front of the monorail way back in the '90's. Pulling into the CR was the best part of the up front experience, and to this day remains a vivid image and happiness flashback for the DW and myself. Our DD's we're so excited and happy, childlike innocence and wonder at everything. Now their done with collage, moved out and working for a living.

Flash forward to 2010, and those memories and emotional attachment to the monorail and CR experience helped us decide to buy into BLT as our home resort.

Fully understand the decision by WDW to stop up front riders. Glad we had our opportunity to experience it 3 times.
