Fried Pickles

I've never heard of such a thing! Since I abhor pickles, I just cringe at the thought. Dh would love to have one, though. I'll have to see it to believe it, though.

lol...love this thread, I can remember the first time I had a fried pickle, I thought this is so gross, and I tasted it just to be nice to my neice...oh my goodness, they really are SO good, if you like dill pickles you will LOVE this.

As I look at the hometowns of the people who claim fried pickles sound gross, I can't help but note that most are from the north.
Northern girl, born and bred...never heard of fried pickles or boiled peanuts. Don't the peanuts lose their flavor??

But my uncle from Texas City, TX made sure that we had grits! He tried to get me to eat "greens," but that is just a wee bit too adventurous for me. :)

If Disney ever sells fried pickles, I'll grab me one.

You are right but I see you are from Dallas. When we lived there I mentioned them to a co-worker and she had never heard of them. By the time we left Texas, 10 years later, they were available at some restaurants.

I bet most of those people who have never had fried dill pickles have never had boiled peanuts either. Another southern delicacy.

I HATE boiled peanuts!! and I am from the south. YUCK!!

I just checked out the menu for the new Dino restaurant coming to DTD in 2008 and it has fried pickles on the menu!

Here is a recipe variation:

Take some Klausen sandwich stackers and dry them off thouroughly. Put them in flour and shake them off until they are barely covered and dry. Dip in an egg wash (a beaten egg with a couple of tablespoons water) and put them back in the flour. Put them back in the egg wash and now into Panko japaneese style bread crumbs. After coating let them sit for a bit while your oil comes up to temp. I used a Frydaddy and once it was hot fry until they are golden brown and delicious. After frying sit them on papertowels and sprinkle with Kosher salt (it doesn't melt so fast and is handy for sprinkling).

Enjoy.

// Yes I know Alton would not recommend paper towels but it was faster than describing the draining rig.

This recipe sounds great!

This thread brought back some good memories for me. I was my Dad's "buddy" growing up. We used to eat boiled peanuts together 3 or 4 times a week but fried pickles were more of a treat since we had to drive to town to get them.. :rotfl2: . There were a couple of "vendors" that would sit beside the road near our lake place selling the peanuts. Some of the best boiled peanuts I've ever had were boiled along w/ some kind of peppers so they had a bite to them. They were really good but I don't see them made that way often.

I had completely forgotten about Lums. They were a great place to grab a bite to eat. I still have one of the giant beer mugs from there. To bad they went out of business.
Yes it is. I think I must have been pretty young when they closed down. I thought they were like a quick drive thru place like In and Outs. I didn't realize they sold beer. That must be why my Dad loved them so much :rotfl: All I remember is getting those little greasy paper bags of fried pickles and savoring every last bite :goodvibes

Fried pickles are great. We used to have a catfish resturant in our town that had all the favorite southern foods. Fried green tomatos, fried pickles, greens, grits, hushpuppies, and fried catfish. To bad it closed. Supposedly fried pickles were one of Elvis' favorite foods. If you want to really try so artery clogging, heart stopping goodness you should try the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo every year. They have booths in the carnival area that will fry candy bars. You can get fried Snickers, Three Musketeers, Reeses PeanutButter cups etc. You gotta love us Southerners and our Fried Foods.

What kind of oil do you use to fry them in?

Just Canola Oil. It works well and the Frydaddy comes with a lid so you can store the oil. You can get a good few frys out of a batch of oil. If the oil every gets funky with debris just get a mesh strainer and put a couple of paper towels in it over a large bowl and strain away.

If the oil ever smokes, it's going bad.

ok you cant mention fried pickles to a pregnant lady!!! Now I need some and I am temped to go make some.....and Im already in bed....

anyone want to make some for me and deliver them to massachusetts? :rotfl2:
