My DH and I have been AP and PAP holders for a few years now and have gone a bunch! Here is the breakdown of when we've gone:
1). MLK weekend in January-This was a GREAT time to go!!! One of the slowest times I've ever been. The weather was definitely cool-we wore sweatshirts and jeans some nights so no swimming that trip. Cons include the early closing times of the parks and the rehab of many popular rides.
2). Late April/early May-DH and I *love* the Flower and Garden Festival, and this time of year is perfect for gorgeous weather and "lower" crowds (depending on when Easter and Spring break are, of course) mixed with all those beautiful topiaries and flower arrangements. Went at one time with my mom over Mother's Day weekend which is still a favorite trip-free photos around Epcot for Mother's Day and special Mother's Day menus. The weather then was SUPER humid-even the CMs were telling us that it was more like August weather! (Bring on the misty fan!)
3). Late July/early August-Since DH is a high school teacher, he has had problems getting time off during the school year for anything longer than an extended weekend plus it was more stressful for him to depend on a sub and leave "his" kids. So...we decided to try a summer vacation in 2004. It was definitely different than our other trips as we drove to Florida and stayed about 10 days. We ended up really liking this time of year, but we also stopped being "commando"-it made all the difference! Since we drove, we were able to bring lots of food and even went off-site for the first time for some meals! Since we cut costs with meals, had APs, and stayed in a Value at an AP rate, we actually spent about the same as we would have during the year for a long weekend! Our game plan was this: get up early for early entry (at that time) and stay until lunch time. Then it was back to the room for lunch or lunch at a resort before we headed back to the room for a break (nap, shower, swim, etc.) Some afternoons we would head to Disneyquest for some air-conditioned arcade fun. Then it was back to the parks for fireworks/parades-really were spoiled by those late park hours!! We would switch it up some days by getting up early to be at the water parks when they opened, bring our lunch, and get a great spot near the shark reef...ahhh...very relaxing. We repeated this plan of action in the summer of 2005-drove to Florida, stayed five days on-site and rented points at OKW (studio), and then stayed 7 days off-site (GASP) at a one-bedroom condo with full kitchen/washer/dryer (for $250 total). Since there is almost ALWAYS a torrential downpour between 1pm-4pm every day, we found that taking a break was not only necessary (due to the heat) but logical. The way we visit WDW in the summer makes for a wonderful and relaxing vacation.
4). Late October/Early November-This is a super time to go as you have both the Food and Wine Festival and Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Festival!! We've done this time with both sides of our families, and so it brings back wonderful memories from those trips. Such a cool thing to be able to dress up and trick-or-treat at the Magic Kingdom on Halloween night! And could there be anything more delicious than sampling food and wines from around the world!? Plus I loved the cooking demonstrations available. The weather is spectacular! You have to take the crowds into consideration as it has gained in popularity immensely even since we last went in 2004.
5). Early December-DH and I were able to get a "sneak peek" at all WDW has to offer for the holidays in early 2004 after I went on a
DCL cruise with my side of the family (DH couldn't get off work to go!) Such a magical time of the year-so much is going on-Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, Osbourne Lights (we didn't get to enjoy these), Candlelight Processional, Holidays Around the World, Christmas decorations...WHEW!! Two full days was all we got, but we will SO be back. We loved going from resort to resort seeing the holiday decorations and special offerings as well as the Candlelight Processional-so touching.
MVMCP was very crowded-would like to try doing that with some family members. The weather was unpredictable-one night we froze when we left our gloves and coats in the car (shorts and sweatshirt weather during the day), but we were overdressed the next night when we went to MVMCP! Layers are important as is a well-laid plan...we didn't really notice low crowds-seemed pretty crowded for us, but we were there over a weekend so I'm sure we got alot of the local crowds. I don't think I would recommend this time of year for a *first* visit as there is so much EXTRA to see-it's tough enough to get a good overview of WDW on your first trip without having extra parties and decorations to take in too!
Hope that helped-there is not a time I wouldn't go to WDW! Every season brings pros as well as cons-just keep that in mind.
