Fremont/San Jose and along the BART

I am tagging along with my husband on a business trip. I will be on my own during the day Monday to Friday and dependent on public transportation as a BART station is within the hotel shuttle radius.

I have read the other San Francisco threads on this board so I have some tentative plans for several days.

Any suggestions for easily accessible places to go in this area?

On the weekend, my husband and I (and the rental car) can go much farther afield. He would prefer to do something outside San Francisco. Suggestions?

Maybe Napa/Sonoma wine country? Monterey and Carmel? Half Moon Bay is a great trip.

While San Francisco's MUNI gets criticized by the locals, it's more than adequate for tourists. You might try the ferry from San Francisco to Sausalito too.
