I call it the freeway. DH calls it the interstate.

Where I live we have it all so I use what is appropriate.

We have the Southeast/Southwest Freeway which cuts through DC.

We have Interstate 95 that runs through MD and VA.

We have the "beltway" which runs around DC/MD/VA.

We also have a couple of "parkways" and a "Greenway".

I always call them by their names when I am talking about them-95, Rt80, Rt 4, Rt17, The Turnpike(NJ Turnpike) the Parkway(Garden State Parkway)

But in general, we call them highways as in "I hate driving on the highway"

Basically the same here. Interstate 5 (or I-5). Highway 50. State route 16. Country Road 12.
There are some regional differences, in southern California, I-5 is commonly called "The 5".......you say that anywhere else in the state and it should you aren't from this area. (can you tell I from time to time produce traffic reports for a TV station?)
There are some some confusing things here though. There are legitimate freeways that folks have never heard of or are not commonly called by their official names. .....Highway 244 in Sacramento is just the Auburn Boulevard exit to most folks. And we have one freeway whose name got caught in a political battle. It used to be Interstate 80, but the feds changed the name to Business 80( it no longer met federal guidelines to be called an Interstate), the state calls it State Route 51, and the mayor of Sacramento years ago passed a measure designating it the "Capital City Freeway".

I from the East coast and we usually say highway or just the number ... if I am going to my Mom's house in Maine from my Worcester home and someone asks me how I get there I would say, 395, to 290, to 495 etc etc.

Now we live in CA and most natives I find call it the freeway while there is nothing free about it ...

But when they refer to numbers they always but a THE in front of it ... like if we need to go shopping we might take THE 5 or THE 10 etc etc.

I also was told that when referring to THE Pacific Coast Highway never ever but a THE in front of it ... ugh. It is Pacific Coast Highway or PCH. Period.

Ok, I voted other: but I do call it interstate: however, on Mondays and fridays I call it Parking Lot, because there are ALWAYS accidents at a few specific places on those days. so you just sit there. so i take the regular roads

I say expressway most of the time although occasionally I'll say the highway.
