Free upgrades from Value Resorts to OKW or SSR, incl free dining!

There are some very lucky people in this world! Good for them. It could be that means that it was successful last year, maybe they sold "x" number of DVC points to the transplants.

Now I'm looking ahead to next year. I don't have points to invite my DGF's again as I did this spring break. I seriously gave thought to mentioning that we all chip in for an all-star stay during free dining. I wonder what the chances are of us getting an upgrade if we do that?! I really don't want to spend 3-5 nights with them in double beds in Pop!

It's official I need to stay away from the DIS ;) You know the saying what you don't know can't hurt you. I just happened to see the thread on the resorts board and some people have the free dining, got upgraded from POP to a 1 bedroom at SSR and got money back! :scared1: I read post on here all the time where people don't feel "valued" for lack of a better word as a DVC member and I don't pay much attention but for some reason this is leaving me with a really SICK feeling. :confused3 Why does it even matter to me??? I don't know but it sure does.

I am not going to even go read the thread, but I am feeling sick about it already with what little I have read here.:sick:

yep - lots of DVC trades and lots of extra inventory held by the developer = upgrade pandemonium...

We are inside 60 days for most of September, I would bet alot of it is breakage (empty member inventory). It would be interesting to see how many empty rooms there are at the other DVC resorts.

They only got a couple of dollars back due to the difference in tax rates.

One lady said $80 which who knows because most were saying $2-$3.

I'm happy for the guest. I'm looking at the situation like this, DVC can cost a lot, families might not be able to afford it. Maybe a value resort is all you can afford, and you got the email stating you can upgrade for free. What a blessing :lovestruc Disney has made some families very happy. I'm not upset becuz I know our family can afford to take many DVC trips. It's great more people will enjoy OKW or SSR, maybe the ones that can afford it might buy.

:sad2: This just seems wrong on many levels. Typically an upgrade would be bumping people up just one category - say from a value to a moderate, or from a studio to a 1 br, a standard view to a preferred, etc etc. To give people who are paying around $90 per night a room that goes for $200-$300 or more a night is crazy, and certainly makes my DVC membership feel a little devalued.

I am part of a grad gathering (3 rooms at POP). One of the 3 of us got the offer the other 2 did not. I was able to get all 3 of us to SSR.. Which is great!

The sight decrease in cost (like $1.50 a day) is (I believe) the difference in hotel tax rates as the values are in Osceola County while OKW and SSR are in Orange County. Those that got bigger refunds were those that had premium rooms at the values.. and they got the differential from a premium to a regular room refunded as well.

I am thrilled to be in SSR as I am considering a SSR DVC via resale.

But I agree, if they are now having folks who paid $82 a room (with free dining) staying there... arent they really cheapening the DVC product?

Its things like buy 4 get 3 free and free dining that continue to question the value proposition of buying DVC (even are resale prices)...

I don't think it will devalue DVC, we may not ever see this promotion again and DVC not an investment.
At the end of the day DVC a timeshare so these types of promotions may happen.

Please pardon me for saying this but I don't believe this should make anyone feel bad about their purchase. In fact, I don't think it is a very good idea in general to base how you feel about your own stuff upon whether or not you have more than others. There will always be someone with more or with a better deal. Make a decsion based on your wants and needs and then enjoy.

The reality is that these lucky few who have taken advantage of a good deal and got upgraded do not have things "better off" than a true DVC owner. My DVC stays in a 2BR cost me roughly the price of a value. DVC is a long term purchase, these sales events are a very limited, singular event, not to mention that surely only a lucky few got upgraded. Plus, they bring in fresh money and owners to DVC resorts which helps us all out as a profitable DVC is what we all want. :thumbsup2

Exact thing happened a couple of years ago during free dining and the majority of us weren't overly happy about it then. Does anyone remember that?

BUT, I specifically know of one family that after enjoying that kind of an experience - they bought into DVC. Score one for Disney. ;)

Let me clarify a few things. I am not mad at or jealous of anyone who got to take advantage of this awesome offer. I am happy for them and don't blame them one bit, heck I would jump on something like that if it was offered to me. I have been sitting here trying to figure out why I literally felt sick when I read the post and this is the best thing I can come up with.

It's kinda like a job. You have been with the company 15 years and you are a loyal hard worker. They really really need to hire new people so they offer a $5000 sign on bouns, competitive pay,and benefits. A new employee comes in with her $5000 bonus and the same pay it took me 15 years to work my way up to. I know it's just business and you gotta do what you gotta do but it burns a little, ok A LOT :lmao:but I eventually get over it and move on. Doesn't mean I hate her, doens't mean I am leaving the company, doesn't mean much of anything other then somtimes life just doesn't seem fair!

Congrats to all who got the upgrade and I feel your pain to all the DVC members who feel sick, cheated, un-loved, devalued, or whatever else it is you may be feeling. :thumbsup2

Yes I remember that and for some reason it didn't bother me then. Maybe because I was a new member at the time and I still thought I was special to Disney :rotfl2: I know better now ...Can't blame Disney though that's life

I figure there are several families like the one you are referring to and that is why Disney is doing it again, if it wouldn't have been a money maker some how I am pretty sure it wouldn't be happening again.

This is exactly the same thing as happened last year - it annoyed me then and it annoys me now

I guess this will sound mean but I just hope that SSR wont be crawling with people. We stayed there on Developer Points in April and it was so serene and gorgeous. :cloud9::love:

We are staying again with the rest of the DP 9/26-10/3. Fortunatly those dates dont seem as popular for the upgrades but still. My fiance is worried that our requests may not be honored as the resort might be way busier.

Oh well. It is wonderful for those people I would have DIED if that happened to me. :)

I guess I have to chime my two cents in since I've been reading the resort boards.
First, let me say sincerely that I am happy for those who received the upgrade who wouldn't normally have been able to stay at a DVC resort in this economy - they will never forget this trip.
But...we are staying at the same time these upgrades are being offered at OKW in a 2 bedroom with friends. We had tossed around the idea of paying cash somewhere and getting the free dining to save some money, because our friends had to rent points to be able to stay with us. Now they have technically paid cash for a room and can't get free dining. People who paid even less cash for a room now have the same accommodations as us, but also have free dining!? Needless to say, our friends are a little miffed, but still excited about our trip.
I realize it's not everyone that booked free dining at a value that got an upgrade (looks like whatever was available went pretty quick). And there are many who didn't get the offer at all.
To sum it up, yes a lot of us are jealous and feeling put out, but we know how much we love our DVC and now others will get to feel the love who might normally never get that chance.
Thanks for letting me run off at the keyboard!:rolleyes1
