Free Manatees from extinction

My DD13 asked to adopt a manatee for Christmas when she was 8. She adopted Rosie, the oldest(and largest!) manatee at Homosassa Springs. When we went to WDW that year, we swung by Homasassa to see Rosie--DD was delighted! If you get the chance, you really should go there.

Since then she has adopted Rosie every year. She proudly displays Rosie's picture and reads the Save The Manatees publication from cover to cover when it comes. I'd much rather spend $25 on adopting one of these magnificent creatures than, say, on Christmas socks or candy.

I was surprised to learn that a friend used the birthday check that we sent her to adopt a manatee! I think that the more exposure manatees get, the better for them, but until all Florida boaters are careful and fit their boats with the guard that protects the manatees, we're going to lose some. We took a boat tour on the St. Johns River and there are still boaters who go through "manatee zones" as if they were turnpikes, they go way too fast. Enforcement money is needed too!

Then there are natural problems like water temperatures. When it gets too cool, manatees die.

I wish they liked cold better - I love manatees and would love to adopt one for our lake! My kids get embarassed when I sing the Manatee song from VeggieTales. ;)

I'm all for this so I will give it a :Pinkbounc .

Then we have this poster who yes, did have a teaser post title (

) and posts about a legitimate animal rights concern and yet gets criticized more so than the other poster who has done nothing except entertain us . :confused3

Just thinking out loud...

Short term, that poster was put thru the wringer. Long term, who knows.

And, I've applauded the OP of this thread for changing back the title. :) So have others. Don't see what your issue is?

Bumping once again. ;)

Nice plate are these available in all states or just Florida?
That one is just for Florida, not sure if other states have them as well. They cost about $25 extra a year but the money goes towards any efforts that have to be taken to save a manatee when one gets hurt.

There's a park here about 5 minutes from my home that's right on the river. In the winter you can often see them and some people are even able to feed them lettuce.

You are welcome! We only have manatees in our zoo, but a friend used to be a marine biologist (who did autopsies on the manatees) and she brings bunches of stuff including a skull to my classroom each year and talks about them. I can't believe there are places you can go to feed them lettuce! That would be awesomely cool!

I cant remember if you could feed the Manatees yourself but when we went to Homossasa Springs they have what is known as the "Salad Bar", where the Manatees congregated to feed on the lettuces which were put in the water

OMGosh! I can't imagine the joy my daughter...alright, and I...would get from going there!!!! I got to be in a training pen with Bengal tigers once...it would be right up there! Thanks for the info!

Does anyone else want to talk about manatees?

We did see Rosie once when we went to Homossasa Springs SP. That's a great place to visit.

Not part of the park, but a few years ago, I went on a boat trip in the Crystal River to see and swim with manatees. There are rules, can't touch with 2 hands at once, and there are "safe zones" where manatees can go, but humans can't. Well, they are so huge, I didn't care to touch, but they are awesome, and I saw the classic sort of picture, a mom swimming with a baby at her side.
