I let a friend of mine ( known her since she was 11 now she's 29) keep her young hourse at our barn.

My husband was not thrilled when I said she could board her horse here for free. He said to me. I really dont want to but its ok with me If I never have to take care of it. We have 2 of our own horses, 3 big dogs, 3 cats, 2 parrots and 4 kids, I work PT DH works full time plus OT.

New Years Eve I called her and wanted to know where she was. She said she had to work all day for her DH (she is a SAHM) and now they were going out. Said she did not have time today to care for her horse and spoke to my DH. I was very angry and told her to get her A## over here now and take care of your horse.

When she came over I told her that just because she had to work and now has plans for the night it was not fair to my DH who also had to work all day and also has plans for the night to expect him to care for your horse. This will never happend again !!

Today is her DD birthday, then a baby shower. I called her and asked what happened because she never showed up today to care for her horse. OH I FORGOT !! was what she said. I was so angry I told her she needed to move her horse to a new home.

I was very nice, Told her that the only thing we asked her to do was to clean the stall daily. THATS IT !! I told her that I have more then enough on my own plate to have to now worry if you are going to show up or not.

In the past we have told her that if the weather was bad or she was sick to call, we would take care of the horse. Today no call nothing. SHE FORGOT SHE OWNED A HORSE !!

Yes we are VERY PICKY about the care of our animals. We have never in 20 years forgotten we have them. They have never been 2nd to anything. Our animals were our choice to bring home not theirs. MY DH, Kids and I have always put them 1st. The stalls are cleaned daily NO MATTER WHAT She knew this. Has known me for 18 years and has known I NEVER NOT CLEAN STALLS.

So now im feeling guilty that I told her the horse has to move. I know I should not because I told her the last time, this will never happend again.

And tomorrow we have to go to a birthday party for her DD. Should we go ??

Sure go to the party.......then suggest to her friend to put the horse up for sale. She seems not to care about it. My dream was to have a horse, but you can bet I'd be there to care for it and muck out the stall. Also I would be riding it everyday. Sheese, why does she even have a horse?

See thats the way I feel. I wanted a horse FOREVER When I got my mare 20 years ago it was a dream come true. She is old now and on her last leg. I dont want horses anymore when she dies. My Dh has his mare, she is only 18 so has many years ahead of her but still she is his last horse.

We told her we did not want to start all over but we were willing to let her have our one empty stall for free but she had to clean it UGGG I am so mad.

Lily the horse is very young, to young to ride but not young enough to work on a long line. She has only worked her twice since Oct of 03 when she came here. DH thinks she is afraid of her.

thank you for the advice. I needed to hear I was right

Yes, go to the party. First it shows that even though you have an issue with her about this situation, you still have a relationship/friendship with her that goes beyond it. But definately stick to your guns about her moving the horse. Sounds like she needs a full service stable and probably one with a trainer available, if she has a young/green horse which should be handled EVERY DAY!

I agree with you, that she should move her horse. She needs to be responsible, and she obviously isn't handling that too well. sorry you're having this trobule.

tricia.

I would go to the party also. I have one word for your friend, LAZY!!!!!!

Sounds like she would be much better off paying for full board somewhere- she's lucky enough to get to keep her horse at your place for free, she certainly shouldn't expect you to be taking care of him, too!!!

I used to train hunter/jump and to tell you the truth, anyone who treated an animal in this manner would no longer be considered any friend of mine. Horses need to be turned out daily. They are loving animals and need that attention as well...Do you have the responsibility of turning her out and attention? Or does she just sit there like some orphan all day?

Sorry, this kind of stuff gets to me. First of all, I wouldn't have a horse without a barn and space for him to run, second, I wouldn't take on the responsibility of someone elses animal unless I'm completely in love with it and willing to treat it as my own (which I have done)

No disrespect to you, but this is a horrible situation all around.

Robin.

Yes Lily is turned out daily. My DH feeds am/pm at same time he does our horses. She only has to muck the stall daily.

No I do not have time for lily. She stays in our pasture all day with my 2 mares,

The reason I said yes in the 1st place was because Lily's owner was here a few days a week with my horses. Grooming, riding DH mare, mucking stalls. We knew how much she loved our horses.

This girl went to school for Barn and Horse MGR. Ammerhurst a great school. I was sure there was not going to be a problem. I would have put money on it !!

I was wrong.

A little back ground. This kid at age 11 knocked on my door and asked if she could pat my horses. Got to know the kid. Let her ride my horses ( rememeber this was 17 years ago) She went to school for horses. was still in our lives on a very regular fashion. Took care of our barn if we went away on vacation. I felt she was ready for the next step so when she asked if she could have the empty stall for her own horse my responce was YES.

This is just sad all the way around. I love her horse. She is a reg, halflinger. Beauitul, kind, loving little mare. We had no choice but to fall in love with her. We just dont have the time for one more and this girl knew it.
