I know they have free books through amazon for Kindles, etc. any free books to listen to? DS gets car sick when reading, but I think listening to a book on our road trip would be great!

We do have a kindle too if we could get books "on tape" for that too. We don't use it very often...

It took a little time to rename the tracks but here's what I did;

I borrowed books on CD from my local library. Renamed the tracks before importing (because each cd starts on track 1). Made them a compilation. Make it an audio book.

All directions I found were online but I don't remember which site. Just do a search.

I'll delete from her IPOD and Itunes when she is done listening.

Check out librivox.org. There are tons of classics on there for free. Some readers are better than others (volunteer), but many of them are really good. The kids and I listened to Pollyanna on our last car trip. We've also enjoyed Robin Hood, Peter Pan, Heidi, and Swiss Family Robinson, to name a few. I load them onto a stick drive and use it with my car radio's usb port, but I'm pretty sure there is an iPod app for Librivox.

If you search audio books in the app store, it'll bring up quite a few free read-aloud books, and tons of inexpensive ones ($0.99-1.99).

I've downloaded several for dd9, and she really likes listening to them. Some are even interactive which is really cool.

My public library has quite a good selection of digital titles, both Kindle/ePub and audio. I use it all the time. Makes my 45-50 min each way commute much more pleasant.

Eta: I can do all this from home online. Haven't set foot in the library to check out a book in nearly 2 yrs. :-)

Have you asked your child's teacher? My kids can go to Tumblebooks through their teacher's websites and listen to books. Otherwise, your local library might have a subscription.

get the overdrive app and see if you library participates. If it does some book can be loaded directly through the app others will need to be downloaded to overdrive on the computer then transfered. If your library does not participate I think it was the philadelphia library that you could register for on-line(fee) for a yearly subscription.

You can also check your local library to see if they have CD on tape then add them. We listened to Harry Potter on the way to Florida. DD is doing the Narnia series now. Another road trip we did Percy Jackson and she finished reading all the others at home.

Now that I think about this, disregard, because you would need a WiFi connection to access this. But if it is for vacation, maybe at the hotel or condo?

Yup I second this. Our local library has digital collections for kindle, audiobooks, and pdf formats.
