Disney and Universal will soon be up against some stiff competition in the theme park world.

Twentieth Century Fox has unveiled details of its much-anticipated park, set to open in Malaysia in 2016.

Named Twentieth Century Fox World, the park will be located at the Resorts World Genting, a casino, hotel and amusement park complex located about an hour outside Kuala Lumpur.

Twentieth Century Fox executives and developers of the project said that the 25-acre park will feature over 25 rides and attractions from Fox movies like "Ice Age," "Rio," "Night at the Museum," and "Planet of the Apes."

The new theme park, estimated to cost more than $300 million, is the first for the brand and banks on the idea of the growing demand for theme parks with a movie-fantasy appeal.

“The opening of the first Twentieth Century Fox World theme park at Resorts World Genting takes our rich history of storytelling to a whole new level and will provide an exceptional entertainment experience,” said Jeffrey Godsick, President of Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products.

Fox also released a sketch of a family "Ice Age"-themed roller coaster ride.

Asia is home to other major theme parks, including Legoland in Malaysia, Universal Studios in Japan and Disney in Japan, Hong Kong and another under construction in Shanghai to open in 2015

The most interesting thing I see in this is that it will only cost $300 million, and possibly be built faster than Disney can build 1 ride :rotfl:

It said MORE than $300 million, it didn't say how much more. There are a lot of "ifs" in this deal. Curious to see how it plays out.

25 acres? Not much of a park if this story is even accurate. Certainly they don't have room for a lot of theming. Probably a lot of technology based shows, but not much room for major tracked rides. I live on 2 1/2 acres, and I can't imagine much of a theme park going into an area 10 times this size.

I was just doing an analysis project in my International Business class on theme parks and where the biggest demand will be in the coming years...Southeast Asia is a HUGE potential market. I'm also curious to see how this works out in terms of popularity/profit...:hourglass

i live in malaysia. the genting highlands resort area is a sort of kitschy place for people willing to spend $$. KL gets a lot of tourists from all over, but mainly the middle east/australia/east asia, so i could see it happening and being successful from a tourism standpoint, but not really locals. the only competition in the immediate KL area are very dumpy rundown amusement parks, which cost about $30 to enter and some say that is too expensive. then we have legoland in johor close to the singapore border, which i haven't visited but people say it's quite nice, and then into singapore we have universal studios.

that being said, i don't see it as being stiff competition to disney or universal in the region. that also being said, it almost makes me want to extend my time here another year just to see what happens :P

:rotfl2: when I first read the title my first thought was interesting a fair and balanced theme park.

Picked a good place to open. Looks like they will pull in enough money for expansion. Wonder if they will build one in United States.

I see they went over budget in the creativity department on the name.

Twentieth Century Fox World.

Well, doesn't that have a ring to it.

Exactly what I was thinking. :lmao::rotfl2::lmao: Judging by the size of the park and the name, I think we can forget about the theming and just assume it will be rides and some shows. The only way I can imagine 25 rides in 25 acres of land would be if they were motion odysee rides like Soarin or Star Tours and maybe a few larger ones. I may need to start my Malaysia touring plans soon.:thumbsup2

Typhoon Lagoon Water Park is 56 Acres. So this would be 45% of the size of TL. They plan to have more than one ride per acre. This would give less than 43,00o sq ft per attraction and would have to also include space for walkways, refreshments, restrooms, and administrative stuff.

i imagine they will build up, as they do with everything here. you can't really build up the rides, but everything else could be do-able.

it's also going to be replacing an existing theme park in the area, so i imagine they will build off the existing infrastructure. i am tempted to take the trip out there to scope out what they've blocked off.
