Four Parks, One Dope: A 2015 Dopey Challenge Trip Report!

My next Disney race or races will definitely include a half or a full. I loved running through Epcot in the 10k but I think it would just be incredible running through the magic kingdom. This was my first time ever seeing the castle lights and I loved it.
Oh, absolutely. There's nothing like getting into MK, hearing the spectators cheering, then taking that right turn and seeing the castle. It's amazing.

Having said that, my favorite half course at WDW is the Wine & Dine one (3 parks!)...just putting that out there. ;)

It was so much nicer this year too. In years past, the castle has been lit with the normal purple/blue lights. The white this year was so much prettier. If they could just keep it like that plus send us through World Showcase at the beginning of the full again, I'd be a happy camper.

I am in love with this entire post. :worship:  :worship:  :worship:

We got Metallica for the full. Loved it! Nothing like Enter Sandman to get your blood pumping before a marathon. :)

Totally agree!!! Though there were some complaints from our corral, we loved it!!!

Shannon, I'm so sad as I'm actually convinced we must have been within feet of each other at this point of the race. I have a photo at mile marker 6 at 1.52.12 and looking at your mile marker 4 time, you were in line for Jack and Sally when we passed you. Wish I'd realised as I would have said Hi!

Re Castaway Cay - we did the inaugural and don't quote me on this, because it's what other runners said (afraid we weren't interested enough in the talk to go) but the rubber medal is super cute - I got one as well as the special inaugural one - BUT I heard they are now charging $60 (includes tech shirt).

Oh no!! which one didn't pan out?? :sad1:

Royal Donald or Mickey. The last two years I've skipped stopping for Royal Mickey and Minnie because the line was soooooo long and I was worried about time. This year I had told Chris we were stopping no matter how long the line was and then they weren't there. I was so disappointed. :(

Great start to the half though. I was also so happy the lights were still on as we ran toward the castle. For whatever reason I didn't take any mile marker shots during the half, so not sure what time it was when we ran in there, but from the amount of sunrise you are seeing, we had to have been pretty close to the same time.

And "bask in my lameness" made me literally LOL.

It really was! Just be aware - they don't provide erasers for the pencils in the class, so that could get a little frustrating for some kiddos.

That is a great tip, thanks. :thumbsup2 Maybe I can remember to bring an eraser.

I love your meet and greets.

Right now I'm signed up for a local 10-miler in April and a local 10K in May...I'm also planning on the Disneyland 5K and the Dumbo Double Dare for this year. My brother has mentioned wanting to do a local marathon  so if he signs up for that I likely will as well...I keep going back and forth. And if the rumors are true and the Castaway Cay 5K has changed to the rubber medals and is still free, I'll probably do that race in July or October (even though I swore I never would again...) :goodvibes

Not sure other than that! Mostly I just want to focus on getting a little faster this year. :)

I feel you on the wanting to get faster. I want to break a 2 hour half marathon. There's just so much more that goes into speed training.

I really want to make it to a Disneyland race, especially Dumbo Double Dare. I need to find more people in my area who love Disney and love to run. So far DH has indulged me but I know he's not as crazy about it as I am.

Fantastic updates!! Your pictures are so cute - love seeing the rare characters. I especially hope that Ulf is out there for the PHM as I'm dressing as Rapunzel :goodvibes

Very interested to hear about the second half of the course :thumbsup2

Your Donald drawing looks great! Bert and Mary together in DHS?! What a good find!

Mmmmm...that grilled cheese and soup looks super tasty.

I didn't do Wine and Dine last year but the weather sounded just terrible so I'm glad your friend is giving runDisney another go to get the the full-on, magical experience!

I agree with the'just' jokes. I think they were supposed to be jokes but people can get really touchy about that so I don't think should have gone there. Focus on making everyone feel good about whatever distance they are accomplishing, I think! Just my two cents, I guess!

I loved the Ralph and Vanellope shot! I really liked that they used the truck which I think is from Boo to You!

You grabbed a good shot of the mile four marker. We missed that one both races because it was buried behind people- oh well!

I also thought it was super weird that nobody was out by the castle. I always thought that the royal Fab-Five meet was such a runDisney staple that I was surprised it was absent all weekend!

Totally agree!!! Though there were some complaints from our corral, we loved it!!!
Complaints?! Weird!!
Ah, I bet you're right. :( That stinks!!
Okay, thanks. I'll have to see what the story is in the coming months! The only way I'm paying $60 to do that race is if I get the nicer Challenge medal with it!! :goodvibes
Royal Donald or Mickey. The last two years I've skipped stopping for Royal Mickey and Minnie because the line was soooooo long and I was worried about time. This year I had told Chris we were stopping no matter how long the line was and then they weren't there. I was so disappointed.
Ugh, right!! :( Both of those were ones I planned on stopping for on Saturday and Sunday and was surprised not to see them there. I wish they'd kept them out. :( I'm sorry that happened (or didn't happen, I guess).
Great start to the half though. I was also so happy the lights were still on as we ran toward the castle. For whatever reason I didn't take any mile marker shots during the half, so not sure what time it was when we ran in there, but from the amount of sunrise you are seeing, we had to have been pretty close to the same time.
Well, darn! Apparently I was close to a bunch of DISers that morning! :rotfl2:
And "bask in my lameness" made me literally LOL.
...it's true though, isn't it?? ;)
That is a great tip, thanks. Maybe I can remember to bring an eraser.
:thumbsup2 I say "some kiddos" may want erasers, but I'm not gonna lie...I myself would have liked one. :goodvibes
I love your meet and greets.
:yay: That's a big part of what keeps me coming back to these races!!
I feel you on the wanting to get faster. I want to break a 2 hour half marathon. There's just so much more that goes into speed training.
I hope you do it!! I'd like to break 2 hours someday, but I'm not sure it's entirely realistic for me...IF it happens I think I'm still a ways off. My big goal for 2014 was to break 2:10 and I think I was trained well enough to do it, but in my goal race in September my IT band blew up partway though (after not bugging at all for the entire year...super). :worried: I don't think I want to try a fast half marathon again just yet.

I do LIKE speedwork...I like having the variety in my runs each week. It's so tough though!!!
I really want to make it to a Disneyland race, especially Dumbo Double Dare. I need to find more people in my area who love Disney and love to run. So far DH has indulged me but I know he's not as crazy about it as I am.
I just recently started doing these Disney races with my friends (who love Disney and the races like I do, but we don't live close to each other)...in the past I've done some with my brother (who likes the races but doesn't love them or Disney like I do). Otherwise I do all my runs by myself. :confused3
Fantastic updates!! Your pictures are so cute - love seeing the rare characters. I especially hope that Ulf is out there for the PHM as I'm dressing as Rapunzel
I hope you find him!! That would be so awesome! :goodvibes Definitely keep your eyes peeled when you're running through Fantasyland - I've met Flynn and Rapunzel there during a past race.
Very interested to hear about the second half of the course
:thumbsup2 I will post about that next!
Your Donald drawing looks great! Bert and Mary together in DHS?! What a good find!
Thanks! :goodvibes Yeah we are not ones to turn down a character meet, and Bert in the Jolly Holiday outfit was a new one for me!
Mmmmm...that grilled cheese and soup looks super tasty.
It WAS. It definitely hit the spot on a chilly day!
I didn't do Wine and Dine last year but the weather sounded just terrible so I'm glad your friend is giving runDisney another go to get the the full-on, magical experience!
The weather was not ideal, that's for sure. :( The beautiful medal made up for it.

I think doing this race - WITHOUT the rain - was a turning point for her. She's excited to do more now! :thumbsup2
I agree with the'just' jokes. I think they were supposed to be jokes but people can get really touchy about that so I don't think should have gone there. Focus on making everyone feel good about whatever distance they are accomplishing, I think! Just my two cents, I guess!
Yeah, I mean, I remember running my first half marathon (Princess in 2011 - challenges didn't exist yet) and the thought of going that distance was SUCH a big deal for me, so to have someone say it was *just* a half marathon would have been disappointing. :confused3
I loved the Ralph and Vanellope shot! I really liked that they used the truck which I think is from Boo to You!
I thought that was a good one too! I liked how each character stop had some kind of cool background. :)
You grabbed a good shot of the mile four marker. We missed that one both races because it was buried behind people- oh well!
My shot from the marathon is not as good, unfortunately. :rolleyes2
I also thought it was super weird that nobody was out by the castle. I always thought that the royal Fab-Five meet was such a runDisney staple that I was surprised it was absent all weekend!
Me too! Disappointing! :(

2015 Walt Disney World Half Marathon! Miles 7-12

Mile Marker 7 is right by the Grand Floridian.
16271863611_20378c06d6_z.jpg

Bert and Mary were out meeting and greeting with some penguins, but we passed them up since we'd already had a thorough chat with them the previous day. ;)

We weren't passing up the next stop though - Golfer Mickey! He's the cutest. This one took us about 6 minutes.
16149666180_2273b22e36_z.jpg

Genie and Abu were out (met them before) just before Mile Marker 8.
15653780953_848bf04968_z.jpg

I forget if we were following the intervals by now, but we were definitely making an effort to pick up the pace overall. It was making my feet feel better.
15651247344_259aa3809d_z.jpg

Our 15K split was sent out at 8:15 AM - 15K in 2:14:28, 14:26/mile pace. Estimated finish time was now 3:09:08 (9:10AM). One other notable thing that happened during this time - Will boarded his flight to WDW! :cool1: YAY!!

We passed the pirate ship again and found Mile Marker 10, and the one overpass we'd have to conquer today.
16087573337_7df62a1714_z.jpg

Suck it, overpass!
16273433645_30225ae515_z.jpg

Just a few highways full of rolling hills left. Jess was starting to feel the distance a bit at this point, but she did say that NOW she understood why the rest of us liked Disney races. It's amazing what a difference the weather can make! I was still dealing with my slightly achy arches.

It seems ridiculous to moan about that now though, because I'm pretty sure that somewhere in here we ran by a gentleman that was running the half marathon on prosthetics - those blades that runners use - accompanied by a guide. I'm normally not really a crier, but I teared up upon seeing him. Truly inspiring.

16085899938_61d35fd3ba_z.jpg

Almost there!
16087605179_043cccd396_z.jpg

And still cheesin'!
15717119723_74f9b37d00_z.jpg

"Let It Go" was blaring from the Mile Marker 12 speakers. We may be the only 2 people on earth who are not sick of that song, so we sang along. :teeth: Sorry, not sorry!
16087567467_6d2494fb06_z.jpg

Bye haters, kiss kiss, I'll see you later!

2015 Walt Disney World Half Marathon! The Finish!

And now, one of the best parts of any race - finding your FANS! And taking a picture with them and some creepers in the background!
16086057520_e8b87297d5_z.jpg

The guy in the picture is Courtney's husband, Austin - he had arrived late last night and this was my first time meeting him! He's holding Jess' sign...hahaha. They'd made one for me too - "Run like there's a free SparkleSkirt at the finish!" If that's not motivation, I don't know what is!

#BlessedBall with a side of monorail!

We knew we had tons of time left at this point, so we decided to fully enjoy this last mile and take a few more pictures!
15653542493_2719a82921_z.jpg

Phineas and Ferb fell under the "have no line so why not stop?" category for us that morning.

"Ferb, I know what we're gonna do today!" We're gonna FINISH!

"I love running!"

I was done with the jumping pictures at that point...I was too afraid I'd come down wrong on my ankle or something. Wahhh!

Hey!

This is very serious. Apparently.
16337033745_5ea7066145_z.jpg

We made the final turn out of Epcot. Gospel choir to the right...

...Mile Marker 13 to the left...

...and PLUTO! He has his own finisher medal, how freaking cute!

Oh, the finish line was also there. We crossed it.
16272590192_a7d8b753d4_z.jpg

Official time: 3:02:55, a 13:58/mile pace - pace-wise this was the slowest race of the weekend for me, but it was probably the most fun I had on the course. Partially due to all of the character awesomeness but mostly because I got to run this race with Jess! Our paces are pretty similar and (I thought) we ran really well together. It was a blast!

Speaking of the character awesomeness - per my Garmin our moving time was 2:31ish, so we added 30 minutes with character stops and our one bathroom break! Only in a Disney race...

We collected our finisher medals and the Powerade/snackboxes.

Yay!
16150850309_58c5989cb5_z.jpg

We walked through the Goofy and Dopey tent - again, no verification done today, but they'll check tomorrow! Riiiiiight :rolleyes2 - and briefly met up with Holly, Courtney and Austin in the finisher area. After making plans for the rest of the day, I split off from everyone else and headed over to the bus area. I was VERY relieved to find that my feet weren't bothering me much anymore.

Sweaty and happy...22.4 down, 26.2 to go!

Well done on completion of the half! You got some really cute pictures. I also really enjoyed the half. The weather was great and we just generally had a really fun time. So nice to get to see your friends on the course and as a SparkleSkirt fan, the motivational sign is perfect!!!

One more race to go. Woohoo!!!:cool1:

The guy stretching behind the mile marker 7 looks like he was hiding/popping out for your picture haha! :lmao:

We saw a blade runner during the full marathon behind ToT/RnR with his guide. I heard through the grape vine (ie a runDisney facebook group) that he was a Dopey finisher! Good for him! :goodvibes

Love that you guys enjoyed your last mile and grabbed lots of pictures. The sky looks so blue/pretty in all the pictures too!

Congrats on a great finish!

We were also inspired by the blade runner, and did you come across Cockney Gary?

Think you must have passed us waiting for Mary and Bert, and then we passed you when you were waiting for Golf Cart Mickey - our mile marker times are within 2/3 minutes :goodvibes

It was an awesome race but I never felt warmed up - wore my long sleeved thermo running top the whole way - and I was full of beans for the last few miles, but my DH was struggling so I was having to do lots of jiggling :yay:

You making me so amped for the wine and dine half in November. I've finally made the solid decision to go for it and even dragging my hubs along bc it looks like it to so much more fun with other people

Good luck on all your races this year and esp if you do the marathon with your brother. I can't get motivated on non disney races yet. I might do army 10 miler since it's close to home and a big race.

I spectated the half on Main Street and I felt like it wasn't mass crowds and was easier to see people this year. Every once in a while there would be a big push of runners but mostly not too bad once we got into the 3+ pace groups

I love love love golfer Mickey and he would be worth the wait for sure. I can't believe you still had the amp to be jumping around for photos- I'd probably look like a half dead noodle by Epcot.

Nice job! This only makes me want to run the half even more. I would've loved to meet Ulf and golfer Mickey. I have say Donald is probably my favorite Disney character so now I really need to run the half because I want a Donald medal.

Just wanted to say I really enjoy you race reports! I saw a blade runner during the full & was amazed at watching him go, very inspiring to see.

I agree, great weather that day. Probably the best all weekend as far as running goes. :goodvibes
So nice to get to see your friends on the course and as a SparkleSkirt fan, the motivational sign is perfect!!!
BUT REALLY... :)

I realized after I saw you the morning of the marathon that I forgot to take a good luck at your custom skirt - BOO! I hope you got some good pictures in it. ;)
One more race to go. Woohoo!!!
WOO!! :cool1:
The guy stretching behind the mile marker 7 looks like he was hiding/popping out for your picture haha!
Hahaha! He totally does! Sneaky guy...
We saw a blade runner during the full marathon behind ToT/RnR with his guide. I heard through the grape vine (ie a runDisney facebook group) that he was a Dopey finisher! Good for him!
Yep, we're talking about the same guy! :goodvibes
Love that you guys enjoyed your last mile and grabbed lots of pictures. The sky looks so blue/pretty in all the pictures too!
Yes!! That last mile is so much fun. It really was a perfect running day.
Congrats on a great finish!
Thanks! :thumbsup2
We were also inspired by the blade runner, and did you come across Cockney Gary?
Hmm, I don't think so? :confused3
Think you must have passed us waiting for Mary and Bert, and then we passed you when you were waiting for Golf Cart Mickey - our mile marker times are within 2/3 minutes
Sound like we had a little game of leap frog going on that morning!! :goodvibes
It was an awesome race but I never felt warmed up - wore my long sleeved thermo running top the whole way - and I was full of beans for the last few miles, but my DH was struggling so I was having to do lots of jiggling
That stinks! I know it's different for everyone but the conditions that day were pretty much ideal for me. :)
You making me so amped for the wine and dine half in November. I've finally made the solid decision to go for it and even dragging my hubs along bc it looks like it to so much more fun with other people
Ahhhh yay! I hope you love it! That really is my favorite half course at WDW...I think it's so much better than the WDW/Princess course. You don't go through the Magic Kingdom but you do go through THREE parks, and they're all lit up. Love it.
Good luck on all your races this year and esp if you do the marathon with your brother. I can't get motivated on non disney races yet. I might do army 10 miler since it's close to home and a big race.
Thank you! I actually did end up signing up for that marathon last night... My brother hasn't signed up yet...

I think I have heard of that 10-miler and that it's a good one (if I am thinking of the right one). :goodvibes Might be a good race to use for proof of time for Wine & Dine, if the date is soon enough. :thumbsup2
I spectated the half on Main Street and I felt like it wasn't mass crowds and was easier to see people this year. Every once in a while there would be a big push of runners but mostly not too bad once we got into the 3+ pace groups
That definitely makes me think that the new corrals are helping. The last time I did this race (2013) I remember Main Street being INCREDIBLY crowded, and that was with the old corral system.
I love love love golfer Mickey and he would be worth the wait for sure. I can't believe you still had the amp to be jumping around for photos- I'd probably look like a half dead noodle by Epcot.
Ahhhh, me too! I was sad that his golf cart didn't make it into the picture though...it's so darn cute!

Well yeah, if you love Donald then you need to do the half! That way you get the Donald medal AND the shirt! :goodvibes
Just wanted to say I really enjoy you race reports! I saw a blade runner during the full & was amazed at watching him go, very inspiring to see.
Thank you!! :goodvibes
I completely agree! I saw him on both the half and the full.
:goodvibes
