Today is the 34th anniversary of the shootings at Kent State University.

I drove through the parking lot where the four students were killed. Earlier in the day there had been memorial services but this evening things seemed surrealistic back to normal.

The spots where the students were killed have memorial markers surrounding them to keep people from parking on them.
It was wierd to see students park right up next to the spots. They walked past the spots some talking on cell phones, some laughing with friends, some moving out of the dorms...a drastic change of what happened in that exact same area 34 years ago.

Dried flowers were strewn over the spots and a single candle still burned.

There is no public parking there so I just stopped for a moment by the spot near where Sandra Scheuer was shot and killed and got out for a moment of silence.

Heres a link with pictures: May 4th

Hi shutterbug -- I live pretty close to Kent - do you? It's weird having lived through that time and now having it be sort of ancient history.

Today is my boss' birthday. He is 34, yea, his grandma came in today to remind us of his birthday and what else happened 34 years ago.

My brother was finishing his freshman year at Ohio University in Athens when this happened. I remember how frantic my father was and he drove right out to get him.

:(

Wow! I didn't realize that happened on May 4. My mom died 10 years ago today. Amazing how the time and YEARS fly.

It is almost unbelievable what happened at that time. I've seen the pictures and videos of that tragic event and is just staggering.

Those poor kids were just voicing their opinion and it cost them their lives. The sad thing is, it could probably happen again at any time.

I was in 7th grade and my history teacher - god love him because not many others did - spent the whole next day ranting about how it was the kids' fault.

Such a sad day in American history. It doesn't surprise me that the kids just ignored the whole thing..too many people think if it doesn't affect their everyday life they can't be bothered. NOT everyone...but there are some might self centered people out there...not just young ones...all ages.

It was a very sad day in Kent St and American history. Thanks for the link shutterbug. We live about 45 minutes away from Kent St. I was 14 then and still remember that day like it was yesterday.:(
