Do you only get the front of the line passes (express pass) when you get a vacation package or can you still get the FOTL passes when you book your onsite room and get your Universal theme park tickets separately?

You get FOTL passes as long as you stay at a onsite hotel and it doesn't matter if you book the hotel on your own or in a vacation package

You do not need to book a package. Simply booking a room at one of the onsite hotels gets you FOTL. Your room key will act as your FOTL pass.

Can someone tell me how long a wait would be WITH an Express pass during the 1st week of August. I know it is summer the the lines are very very long but just how long are they with the Express pass? Thanks!

I have found that express passes can cut your time from standing in line and waiting for 60 to 90 mins to 10 to 20 mins when it is busy

If you aren't staying onsite, you can purchase the Express Plus passes which are good for one Express access at each attraction (except for P Flyers at IOA). The EP's can be purchased at either park.
