We are taking our first Disney cruise in December! How formal is formal night! I love getting dressed up but don't want to be the only ones dressed up!!! Can you guys please show me pics of your dresses so I know what to get! Thank you!!
If I knew how to post pics i would post a Picture of the dress I want and the dress I already bought my 8 year old DD!

Thanks!! :beach:

I felt out of place in a full-length gown, so i just leave it home now. Most of the ladies wear cocktail dresses or slacks and a nice blouse. Most of the guys wear sport coats. Very few tuxes.

You will see a wide range of dress on formal night...from long gowns and tuxes to cocktail dresses and suits to shorts and t-shirts. [Yes, I am being serious.] Wear whatever you are comfortable in and enjoy the chance to get some great family pictures. :)

This is how we dressed for formal night on the Magic last week. I would say we were dressed about like everyone else. I saw two men in tuxedos but that was it. And Semi formal night well we dressed nice but there were a lot of people in the dining room in shorts that night, it may have had something to do with having been in port that day.

What length cruise are you taking? 3/4 night cruises do not have a formal or semi-formal night.

DH rents a tux and I am in a full-length gown. If I could justify flying with a crinoline I'd be in a ball gown; if a 7-night closed loop ever comes back to the LA and San Diego you bet I will be bringing that with me. The Navigator says Formal Night, so I don't care in the least about other people ignoring the atmosphere that DCL is trying to create. Our servers love it when we participate; we love to dress up and go dancing as a family before dinner in the Promenade Lounge; the musical act clearly gets a boost from seeing people dressed up and it shows in their performance; plus we get great pictures, from Shutters and otherwise. One of my favourites is one of DH and DD on the dance floor, dressed to the nines and having a great time.

The people who don't dress up always say things like "It's my vacation and I don't want to be pressured into doing something I don't want to do." Well, that works both ways. Don't let other people decide your vacation for you, especially when the CMs are trying very hard to create the Formal atmosphere and will fawn all over you for your efforts. The Navigator says you can do it, so do it! :D

I agree. If u want to get dressed up then do it! I am one of the people that just dress nice :) but I love seeing all the formal gowns!!!

3/4 night cruises do not have a formal or semi-formal night.

Is this optional or have they done away with it entirely? That would cut back on the amount of luggage considerably for me. We were on a 3 night in May of 2011 and we had a formal night, but hardly anyone dressed for it.

It has never been called a "formal night" on the 3/4 night cruises...only an "optional dress up" night.

I work a floor length gown with a sequined bodice. DH and almost five year old DS wore tuxes. Almost five year old DD wore princess dress and BBB styling. We didn't feel out of place at all. I love an excuse to pull out the formal gown!

Although we like to dress up for formal night, I refuse to buy my young children a fancy tux that they will only wear once before they outgrow it. So here is what we wore on our October, 7 night Fantasy cruise.

There is the whole range of attire, from truly formal to just one step above casual (and maybe even casual).

I used to stress about this because I am not one to want to dress up on vacation. But now I just wear whatever I want (that is appropriate for dining with others - that might be a dress, or slacks and a sweater).

I love all the photos! I will see if I can find some of ours.

We were just on the Fantasy last week. Our last cruise prior to the one we just completed was a 4-day on the Dream. There was a night and day difference in overall attire in the dining rooms between the 2 cruises. The 4-day was much more casual with a ton of people dis-regarding Disney's requested attire in the dining rooms. On the 7-day, the vast majority of people were dressed appropriately in the dining rooms.

Speaking specifically on formal night, most men wore suits or at least dress pants and a sports coat. There were some in tuxes (more than just a few but not a ton either) and some with just shirt and ties. Thankfully, I only saw 1 man in shorts, t-shirt and flip flops. :confused3

For the women - almost all were in dresses of some kind. They ranged from simple sundresses to floor-length beaded gowns. Most were somewhere in between.

I don't have any pictures handy, but in our family, DH and DS8 wore tuxes. I wore a black floor-length chiffon dress. DD16 wore a cocktail length gold and silver sequined dress.

I am really glad to hear that there were quite a few men in tuxes!!! My husband and son will be wearing one and I will be wearing a formal gown. We love to dress up and although this is our first DCL cruise, we have cruised, RC, and Cunard in the past. These lines (particularly Cunard) are more strict about dress codes on formal nights. I kind of wish Disney was too, in a way. It is so lovely to see everybody dressed up and doing things properly, even for just one night.
I am glad we will not feel out of place if we dress up in our dinner suits and long dresses!!!

We got pretty formal on the Magic back in 2009, we're back cruising on the Fantasy in August so intend to do it all again. Callum's little brother is now his age so the £25 ($40) tux will fit him and it'll only cost the same for another one. I rented for delivery on board and if nothing else the pictures look pretty good! Who says the Brits don't scrub up well in formal photos :)

We like the opportunity to dress more formally. I usually wear a tux and DW a black cocktail dress. To save weight and space, we wear them again on the semi-formal night as well (I just bring an extra shirt and wear a cummerbund one night and a vest the other; DW changes jewelry and wrap). I like seeing others go to the effort as well as it provides some of the elegance and luxurious ambiance of the golden age of cruising.
