Formal night!!

Husband wears his tux on formal and semi-formal nights. On those nights I wear floor-length beaded gowns. On all other evenings I wear dresses of some kind. Some are cocktail style (husband will wear his suit) some are resort style dresses (husband may wear his sport-coat or just dress pants and a collared shirt).

As soon as dinner and pictures for the evening are completed - off to the cabin to change into casual clothes!

It really depends on what you want to wear. I usually actually dress up about the same for semi formal and formal night. I wear a pair of black pants and a nice button down shirt, the DW wears a pair of dress pants and a nice shirt or something similar to this. There is a wide range of peoples clothing choices that I have seen, from wearing shorts to super formal. Dress how you feel comfortable and know that there will be people more dressed up and some less. The number one rule to remember is your on vacation, as Timon and Pumbaa say "Hakuna Matata."

This is DH & my formal night picture.

I have worn this gown on 2 DCL cruises for formal night & to a local Policemans' Ball.

I love getting dressed up & there are so few opportunities to do it anymore.

I say, "GO FOR IT!"

We got pretty formal on the Magic back in 2009, we're back cruising on the Fantasy in August so intend to do it all again. Callum's little brother is now his age so the £25 ($40) tux will fit him and it'll only cost the same for another one. I rented for delivery on board and if nothing else the pictures look pretty good! Who says the Brits don't scrub up well in formal photos :)

Very classy!

Well from one Brit to another, and indeed one Northerner to another (we live in Cumbria), you all look absolutely amazing!!!!

Aww you both look wonderful!!!
I love your gown!!!

Although we like to dress up for formal night, I refuse to buy my young children a fancy tux that they will only wear once before they outgrow it. So here is what we wore on our October, 7 night Fantasy cruise.

FormalNightStairs-WriteUp.jpg

I was on the seven night fantasy back in september and i got dressed up for formal night. I even wore a tiara. I wish i could figuar out how to post a photo so that i could show what i wore. I even had on four inch heels. So i would wear what you most feel comforable with and what you can pack.

This was our table group on formal night on our last cruise. 2 of the "couples" were travel agents (1 mother daughter, 1 mother son) on an exploratory cruise on DCL. The other couple didnt know about formal night and my wife and I dressed up (any chance to wear my mickey tux). This is about the normal for formal night.

Yes! :thumbsup2 This is about a perfect cross-section of what you'll see on formal night.

There will be the people who love to dress up in tuxes and full length gowns. There will be some who kind of skirt the edges by wearing a collared shirt and slacks and sundresses. The vast majority lie somewhere in the middle, with a button down & tie or suit for the men and cocktail or "church" dresses/pantsuits for the women.

Bottom line: respect the spirit of the evening but wear what you feel most comfortable in. If you want the long gown, go for it! If formal is not your thing, put on some dark trousers and a nicer shirt and blend in.

Do girls ever don princess dresses on Formal night? We are cruising for the first time in January, and I know my girls would prefer to don their princess gowns (real gowns from Chasing Fireflies, not costume quality) if they can.

Little princesses can (and do!) dress up any time.

There will be girls in princess dresses every single night, not just Formal or Semi-Formal Nights.

Thank you. I made it myself. I had the pattern for a long time & just waited for the right material. I was very happy with the finished dress and feel very special when I wear it.

My DD did her Rapunzel gown (with full BBB makeup and hair) for formal night.

I do wish that I could see your picture and I do agree that everyone should wear what they feel comfortable with and what they can pack. Being that we were gone for 15 days including 2 Halloween parties, pirate night, formal night & semi-formal night it was difficult to pack everything including all of the FE gifts.

If you are not comfortable in what you are wearing, then you will not have fun. Having fun & making magical memories is what a Disney cruise is all about.

P.S. Just for fun: I was wearing 5-6 inch heels under my long dress in the previous photo. I am so stinkin' short next to my 6'2" DH and I hate hemming my dresses. HAHAHAHA :rotfl2:

Here is my family on formal night--not overly formal, but we were very happy and definitely fit with the spirit of the evening.

You can't tell in the pictures, but both my dresses are sleeveless and above the knee in length. I wore the same black shrug both nights.

Here's our formal night attire from our 1/18 Magic 8-night out of Galveston.

I think maybe a lot of people on that cruise were first timers and didn't know. We were out & about for an hour or so getting pics and may have seen 1 or 2 other families really dressed up.

The tuxes for the guys were really inexpensive at Al's Formal Wear. We purchased their "cruise package" (not RENTAL) for $119 each. That included coat, pants, shirt, tie, cummerbund, and studs. The lady threw in socks. We bought the boys' shoes at Payless for $30 each and the hubby's we spent more at DSW since we know his feet aren't growing anymore. For the boys, the adjustable waist pants and coat can still be let out in length as needed. We have 2 more cruises with formals this year then another next May. I expect we'll get plenty of wear out of these tuxes. Consider a tux rental for a cruise from Al's would've been $200 each. If we rented from the cruise formal company that delivers the tuxes to the staterooms we'd have been out $300 each this year alone. To us, it was an investment.

We didn't actually make it to our 2nd seating dinner. We got ready super early thinking we'd need that time to get lots of pics before dinner. I guess we hit the photo op spots perfectly because we had all the lifestyles shots PLUS Minnie done in like 45 minutes total. We had another hour and a half until dinner. We were super hot. Very uncomfortable. We NEVER dress up so being in all those clothes was pretty miserable. My left shoe ate a hole in my left leg (above the heel) in the 45 minutes we were out. We were going to just relax in the stateroom for half an hour, try to get a pic with Mickey, then hit dinner. While sitting in the stateroom we put it to the vote: stick it out and go for dinner or ditch the clothes, hit Topsiders, and get on with our evening.

We had a lovely dinner in our tshirts & shorts at Topsiders. :lmao: So, yeah, we actually spent about $900 for clothes we wore for less than an hour. But we got some nice pics! :thumbsup2

Cruising in September. Hubby is wearing a suit, me a new dress (haven't found it yet). My daughter is wearing her homecoming dress from high school.
