For those who've had their flu shot already-

No more Flu shots for me -I stopped 3-years ago. Every year I’d get my shot without fail, and within 6-weeks I’d develop a severe upper respiratory issue(infection?). Just brutal breathing issues that would last about a month and would take a course or two of antibiotics along with a rescue inhaler. Then finally my doctor suggested skipping it a year -this will be year 4 and haven’t been sick(with flu) since. No idea what the issue is with the shot but my body rejected it every time.

From what I understand, the vaccine is injecting the flu into your system and having all those nifty white blood cells attack it. Doing it it is programed to be able to kill off the raw flu germ when you are exposed causing you to have a more moderate reaction to it, if any at all. It's the real flu that will kill you, not the vaccine.

I am a very strong advocate for vaccines and will take anyone the comes along and has shown some sign of being helpful. I remember two things about my childhood the grouping of Mumps, Measles, Whooping Cough and Chicken Pox and how sick I felt when I got them and also the biggy Polio. I didn't have Polio because it was terrifying seeing all those kids in Iron Lungs so when someone said they had invented a vaccine we didn't walk, we ran to get it. They were giving them in fire stations and town halls all over the country and stopped that evil thing in it's tracks. Because of those things happening they didn't happen to my children. I cared enough to not have them experience the same thing I did. I still had one child that grew up to not believe in vaccines but fortunately she had her children vaccinated when it was legally and socially required. Why? Because she never got those things mostly because her mother and I knew the value whereas she never experienced those illnesses so therefore she has no reason to fear them.

Maybe you had something else besides the flu? Something bacterial rather than the flu? Antibiotics won't do anything for a virus, like the flu, but rather only for bacterial.

We didn't have to walk or run. We lined up in the hallways at school, bing, bing, bing, right down all the rows of kids. What a godsend vaccines were, and are.

That was the thinking but after about 10 straight years of getting sick 4-6 weeks after the shot, it couldn’t have been a coincidence. Now, after 3-years I’ve been fine 🤷‍♂️

I’m not anti-vaccine in any way -but I’m not taking a vaccine that makes me sick. I’m not talking flu -I’m talking serious upper respiratory issues …like not breathing comfortably. I had asthma as a kid and it’s been long gone. Since skipping the flu vaccine I’ve been perfectly healthy all winter. Something about it doesn’t agree with my system…

I didn't mean to imply anything or judge whether or not you have a vaccine, but for those that have been on the fence because they never had one before, telling them that you had trouble breathing might just make them skip something that would be beneficial to them. I think that your situation is not the general reaction that people get. For you not having one is obviously the right choice, however, that doesn't always apply and I just wanted to let people know that for me and my family vaccines eliminated a whole lot of sick days due to the flu.

For me a good "Disney" example is Mission: Space. As you might know or have heard when it first opened up two people died (preexisting condition unknown) and all we heard about was how much motion sickness was happening. I love simulation rides but avoided it for a few years. Then one day while munching on an obviously thyroid damaged Turkey Leg I had an epiphany. I don't have heart issues, I've never been motion sick in my life so why am I to scared to ride it. So I just sucked in my gut, and ballooned out my manly man chest out and went to it. There was no orange and green. Just orange. I rode it and it instantly became my favorite ride in Epcot. That doesn't mean that others with those histories should ride it, but unless the problems are minor do not ride it. Everyone is different. At the end of the ride (I was riding with a young family) I yelled out THIS IS AWESOME. Not a big deal but something those that know me would think it is out of my normal behavior.

I got mine two days ago and reading this thread made me remember that I still have the bandage they put on after the shot. So I guess it's not bothering me much.

I was mainly referring to the antibiotic aspect for a viral infection.

Main thing is you're well now each year.
