For those that stockpiled...

Yep...that’s me too. About the third time I bleached my sink back in March I said “screw it - I’m just not a good enough housekeeper to survive Covid”. :rotfl:

This statement is...gold. Pure Gold!
I feel the same way!
I've got two extra containers of no-name antibac wipes and two of TP, one of Bounty & one of some god awful paper towels that I hope never to have to use. I forgot all about them until I opened the closet in the spare bedroom. When I came across them I brought them down and now we'll use them.

When we could not get normal toilet paper anywhere, we went to Restaurant Depot and bought a pallet of the big rolls that are meant for public toilet stalls. We have about 8 or so left and are starting to think about whether we want to try and get normal TP again or buy another pallet. They were a lifesaver, but I'm ready for something softer.

I just realized just how much toilet paper we actually go through. It is a lot. Five of us living here and working/learning from home all day every day (dh does go to the office on and off now), means we go through a ton of it. I think I probably should re up what we have.

I finally just went back to buying a good ole 4-pack of TP because the stores are finally selling 4 packs again.

We do stock pile a tad more in the fall because of Michigan winters and the fact that I dislike very much driving on ice and snow. :(

Now DH still has enough hand sanitizer that when we die our grandchildren's grandchildren will always have very clean hands!! :teeth:

Didn't stockpile much in general, definitely not food and/or TP.

The only thing we probably now have too much of is hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes. We aren't using nearly as much of those these days as I would have expected.

I was careful to buy what we needed and kept replenishing earlier than usual, so our stockpile was never super large to start. I have been keeping a backup of single items like syrup, 2-3 items for things like chicken broth and spaghetti sauce, Costco package of tuna, but not like 5 or 10 of an item. I normally buy TP at Costco, but when things started going south I bought a package at our local grocery store. I still have that pack, even though I have bought and used a couple of Costco sized packages since then. That is my "emergency backup TP" and I plan to keep it until the end of the pandemic or until an actual emergency. Otherwise, I oopsie duplicated on antacids at Costco, so we have a lot of antacids. I just realized I was down to my last package of angel hair pasta, and that was a surprise.

This is how I have been doing it. At this point I have pretty much what we are using plus one in the pantry for things like toiletries, pancake syrup, sugar, mayo, olive oil. Couple cans each of different veggies & fruit, 2-3 jars each of 2 different spaghetti sauce, 2 extra cereals, & a couple boxes of different pastas. I do have extra paper products in large packages. I didn’t go crazy stockpiling at the beginning. But I have always been a buy as I need it person. I didn’t have much for backup as things got bad. So I have gradually picked up extras to have supplies on hand. Now I have 2 large packs of TP plus an opened one; 1 extra PT, several boxes of tissue & 2 packs of napkins. We did get a small freezer over the summer & I have some meat, frozen veggies & bread in there. We are in our 60‘s, DH has an underlying health issue & he will be retiring early next year. A few years ago, we got 6 feet of snow in 24 hours, & couldn’t get off our street for 3 days. Between that experience & the shortages this spring, I did get a little anxious. I’m hoping if we have a bad winter weather wise or the virus gets bad here again, I won’t need to get anything but milk & bread for long periods.

I rarely used antibacterial sprays, wipes or hand sanitizers before, so had zero on hand in March. I stalked online religiously until I found those & now have several tubs of wipes & a couple cans of Lysol spray. I still don’t use them much, but want them on hand in case either of us gets COVID & we need to isolate. I am an RN working in a large urban hospital, so I do have that risk. And I have supplied family members too.

The supply chains would be fine if it weren’t for the hoarders.

That’s not totally true. My DH is in management in a food production plant. Early on there were some supply issues even for them. And the some of the items that are missing aren’t always things people are hoarding. For example... about 6 weeks ago, I noticed the dental floss display was empty at the grocery I shop at. I buy 2 different brands since we have different preferences. My preferred brand was back after a few weeks, my DH’s was back last week but in a smaller package. Couldn’t find them at target then either. I haven’t heard of anyone hoarding dental floss.

Another example is packaged gravy mix.... totally gone from wegmans for weeks. Found it at another grocery & a limited amount back at wegmans last week. An relative in another city also had the same thing missing.

It might be our particular grocery chains, I don’t know. But the supply chains are not normal right now. I can say week to week, you never know what will be in or out of stock. I’ve heard the same thing from family & friends, even the cashiers have mentioned... you have to “get it when you see it”, because you never know next time you’ll see it. I won’t go running store to store looking for things, so my experience is with 2 different chains & national chains online .

For all of you who have plenty of wipes, send them my way! :rotfl:We have a pet cockatiel and we always had wipes on hand to clean up after her but right now they are near to impossible to find.

Fun fact, cockatiels poop approximately every 10 - 30 minutes. (something I did not know before our bird landed on our back deck and decided to stay forever)

Didn't stockpile anything. I started the last roll of TP so I bought what was available, which was an 18 pack of Angel Soft. I started the first roll on April 1st as I was curious how long a roll would last. I've used 3 rolls of Angel Soft and my last roll of Scotts. I started the 4th roll of Angel Soft earlier this week.

We don't use much milk for cooking, but I do for use it for coffee every day. I bought a box of shelf stable coffee mate cups. And I keep a bag for frozen bread dough rolls in the freezer. There is always food in the house , but drinking black coffee is something I can't deal with.

We ran out of 91 alcohol, cleaning wipes and chlorox cleanup and have not seen them in the stores since February. I am glad I stockpiled canning rings since those were hard to come by in the fall. I look at food storage as insurance. It is nice to not have to run out to the store all the time. Went out to a store last week and caught COVID again. Now I am stuck at home for weeks and thankful for the stockpile.

Who knew my husband had so much in common with a Cockatiel 🤣

We are buying a package of toilet paper or paper towel whenever we use up a pack. At least we stay even. It has been hard to find paper towel but it seems to be making a slow comeback. I am doing the same with some foodstuffs like canned beans, chicken, frozen veggies, and other food staples.

I don't think you understand. My family also has medical reasons to limit contact. But we didn't feel like that required stockpiling 8 months worth of toilet paper.
Scott TP is awesome. You'll love it. I took all that terrible Angel soft off the market just for you. No no no no. You'll never have to thank me. It's a public service.

I sheepishly admit I made DH (against his will) throw a big toilet paper package and paper towel package in our Costco cart yesterday even though we don't desperately need.

Everyone seemed to have both in their carts and I got intimidated. Told DH I would sleep better at night knowing we had.
I think I'm losing it.

Two different plumbers who came to our house (we do not have septic, just normal, with occasional problems - - the house not us. ha. ) made us promise we would never use any other toilet paper except SCOTT. He said NEVER. Especially Charmin. "Charmin keeps us in business".

We usually keep a Sam's club size package of toilet paper and paper towels, even pre-covid. We were due to stock up right as the hoarding started. It took us a while but we did finally find a big jumbo box of TP. we only have about 6 rolls of that left. We could not find flour, yeast, sugar and rice for the longest time and we ended up having to buy a much larger package of each than we would have (that was all we could find). We now keep a sealed box in the pantry with those things. The rice was a change for the good. We used to just eat Minute Rice bout couldn't find any, so we started buying bulk long-grain rice and cooking it in the InstaPot. That tastes SOO much better!

We inadvertently have also stocked up on hand sanitizer (my wife is always buying it), and liquid soap. We could not find liquid soap refills for the longest time - up until about 2 weeks ago in fact. I kinda got obsessed with stocking up on that.

At the beginning of the pandemic. Have you made your way through all the food and TP yet? We haven't and I'm sure ready to see it all gone. I want my storage space back.

I don't think we did the 'hording' thing. I did purchase my hurricane 'keep on hand' supplies earlier than I usually do, before the pandemic hit, but that was because I had the extra funds on hand to get them. (Glad I did, it helped when things went into short supply that first two months!) I like to keep a small supply of things on hand, for those 'just in case' scenarios, anyways, but nothing outrageous...things like a big pack of tp or the big container of laundry detergent.

But....I had to buy tp and paper towels last month; I'm on the last box of tissues now. Plenty of hand sanitizer and bleach still. I have 2 containers of Lysol wipes, because instead of using them, I used washable towels and Clorox/Lysol sprays; saved the wipes for things I didn't want to spray, like keyboards/mice/remotes. We've eaten through almost all the hurricane goods that I stockpile every year (canned beans, bags of soup mix, etc). It's grocery shopping time anyways, so I'll pick up another big thing of tp and paper towels, and some more tissues next week.
