For those that have the New IPad...what warranty did you go with if any?

I got the new IPad at Best Buy and purchases the Black Tie warranty. It was 169 bucks and covers accidents. Now I am second guessing and wondering if I should get the Apple Care instead. At Best Buy the guy told me they don't work on them so they just give you a new one. I also see there is a reasonably priced plan through Square Trade. thanks!

Go with square trade. Tomorrow they have 30 percent off. I have had 3 accident claims now. No question they are the best.

The basic Apple care that is included with purchase does not cover damage.

I would upgrade the Apple Care to the plan that does cover screen breakage (don't remember name) over other plans just because I prefer working directly with the Apple store.

I didn't get one because I figure I would just be buying a new one whenever it comes out.

With my iPhone4S though, I did get AppleCare+.

I have a feeling I will probably go with Apple LOL. I will have to return to BB to get the refund and then visit the Apple Store to get it on the Ipad.

I got an iPad2 in February and got the Geek Squad coverage and then dropped my iPad and the screen cracked, took it in and they gave me a brand new iPad3 and a $33 refund. I only paid $109 for my Black tie coverage. I need to add it to my IPad3, in case anything happens to it.

I always get the coverage from Best Buy and they have always been great with everything and I have used mine alot, mostly for accidents.

We just bought the ipad3 about a month ago and I paid $99 for the Apple Care for 2 years. He said it covered for accidental damage now.

See that is what the guy told me. He said any issues they just give you a new one.

Don't forget apple care has a deductible of $49 for cracked screen or water damage and only 2 occurances... we're leaning towards square trade with the no deductible... have only 3 days left since DH bought DD the IPad3 at the apple store. When they were there the clerk didn't mention the co-pay or 2 occurance limit.

That is true too. Okay I think I am going to stick with Best Buy. Square trades sounds good too..but I like the idea of walking into BB and them just handing me a new one if I drop it/crack the screen or spill something on it. I think Square Trade is the best price wise though. I just don't like sending stuff off.

Well, they do give you a new one, but there are rules. For instance, DD16 (I need to update my sig!) had the iTouch 3rd gen, it stopped working, we had to send it off for repair 6 times before they finally gave her a 4th gen. Now, DBF got his 4th gen, it stopped working and he got an immediate replacement, so if they don't carry the product you have you do have to send it in for replacement, the replacement is refurbished and you get it back in about a week. I much prefer the program when they have the same gen in stock, it's super easy.

You don't always have to send off with Square Trade. A few weeks ago my son had a problem with his iphone. Square trade told me to go to the nearest Apple Store and pick up a new one. Within hours they had taken care of a phone that I had washed in the washing machine..I have had 3 claims with Square Trade. They are awesome..

I bought my Ipad 2 when it first came out last year. I didn't purchase any warranty. Extra warranties are a waste in my opinion. I've never dropped it nor had any issues. My two DD's (8 and 10) as well as my wife and I all use it frequently and none of us have dropped it or or anything. I use only the Smart cover and a Gelaskin on the back as well.

I've never had anything (other than a car) have to be fixed or replaced using a starndard warranty, let alone after the warranty unless the item has been truly reached the end of it's life. Guess i'm just really lucky. :thumbsup2

I think that you are lucky.

I've made 3 Square Trade claims in the past 2 years. Once when my son's phone would not reset and the Apple Store would not fix it without charging him an arm and a leg (even though it was under warranty at the time, they claimed that it was a result of being dropped), once when he dropped his phone in the toilet and just recently when the phone was left in the hot sun and the battery fried. That one warranty purchase saved me a ton of money over having to purchase a new phone each time.

I have all of our iphones covered by Square Trade as well as two ipads and my Kindle DX. I have been very happy with how they handle the claims and love the fact that I can fax them my receipt right after purchase so that if I need to make a claim, I don't have to dig through my own paperwork to verify the purchase.

Actually, they usually give you a refurbished iPad, not a new one.

IMO, these types of warranties are a waste of money. The useful life of a device such as an iPad is about 3 years; the chances that you will need to use this warranty before upgrading your device is unlikely. Check to see if you have any free extended warranty protection through a credit card - this should be all the coverage you need.

Please note there is no iPad3 - it is simply the New iPad.

That's exactly what they do with an iPod, but not the iPad. I have had to take in my iPod and it is always sent off, but they told me when I went in with the iPad, they take care of it in store.

Not necessarily true. I bought my iPad2 as an open box item, so they gave me an iPad3 that had been an open box item. Had they not had an open box, they would have given me a brand new one. The only problem with the one they gave me was the person purchased it and didn't like it and brought it back, so they couldn't sell it as new.

They don't usually have refurbished iPads in the store, or they don't in ours.

I have been more than glad to pay for the Black Tie warranties, they have been great, it has saved me a ton of money and was well worth what I paid for it. I have only had my iPad for 3 months and dropped it, I would have been sick if I hadn't had that warranty, because it was such an expensive item. They have replaced my husbands GPS unit 3 or 4 times for nothing, my iPod had to be replaced 3 times, again, a huge savings, and I'm like the OP, I don't want to have send something off to be fixed or replaced, because I just don't have time to deal with that, I let Best Buy do it.

And the advantage is if you are a rewards member at Best Buy, if you don't use your coverage, they give you triple the rewards, I'm about to get a huge batch of points on my washer and dryer.

You are lucky, we have 2 iTouches in our house, they've both been replaced multiple times. We also had the battery in our laptop replaced for nothing.

It depends, IME they only give refurbished if the one you have is no longer sold in the store, then they send yours off and you get a refurbished one in replacement. DD15 went through 7 iTouches, 6 of them in 2 months (the refurbs kept breaking), she got a new one (upgraded model) about 2 months before the warranty was due to go out. For some items the warranty is worth it for sure, but for others it isn't, you just have to know what it's good for and make you decision based on that.

They don't always send your item out for repair, sometimes it's simply replaced at the time, it just depends on what their system says to do and the status of the item you're bringing in. :)

Our BB doesn't have refurbished anything in the store, they always have to send your item away for repair. We don't get the warranty on all of our purchases, but we do on ones we expect to last for a while. And yes, I expect Apple products to last more than 2-3 years. :)

The only item they have ever sent out for repair for us is my iPod, and both of our cameras. They just sent me a refurbished iPod, they have never swaped it out in store. And they repaired the cameras, which was fine, because I don't think they make our cameras anymore.

I don't think our BB has anything refurbished in store either, they have open box items.

Oh, I agree, I expect Apple products to last a long time. I just wore out the battery in mine, and they can't replace them, so they sent me a refurbished one and it wouldn't hold a charge, so they had to send me another one. My warranty is about to expire on it and it's perfectly fine, I guess I will renew it, because that is much easier on the purse than replacing it.

To clarify, this is what you get if you go to an Apple Store. They have boxes of refurbs. I have no idea what they do at Best Buy; I don't shop there due to their clueless employees, long lines, and poor customer service.

Been using SquareTrade for years. Never had one problem and yes, we have used it. Got SQ on our iphones and ipads.
