For those of you who *hate* heavy DL crowds and went during heavy crowds...

How was it? Did you regret going? Did you adjust ok?

I know it's always crowded but I've always tried to avoid the crazy periods (weekends, xmas, etc) but our Dec 6-11 trip is looking like it's gonna be nuts.

I am really worried (maybe freaking out) about crowds and my family of 5. Kids are 7, almost 9 and 11.

I'd love to hear from those of you who really hate the peak season and then went on to survive it...

thanks everybody!:thanks:

I went 4th of July last year for five days, it wasn't the crowds that got to me so much as the heat (although 4th of July evening was kinda nuts). You just have to go in with the right attitude and be ready to take advantage of Fast Passes for all the popular rides and make sure you always are getting one when eligible. I'm going to be there next week, we were expecting a low crowds week when we planned the vacation. Looks like it's going to be crowded instead, so I'll be running around getting fast passes while my DW is keeping the kids busy.

Personally it was more of an issue of knowing when to step away. Like I knew not to try to leave the park during or after fireworks after one incident. Rather I would go find a table to sit and snack or go to rides in critter country.

I grew up 4 miles from DL, and worked in the Star Trader when I was in high school (many, many years ago...). This was back when they only had the fireworks launched in the sky (nothing going on in front of the castle). Guests would stop wherever they were to watch them. The summer was so ridiculous with people that I swore I would never go then. It would be wall to wall people...not just certain areas like it is now.
Fast forward to 25 years later and I have a little one and live 6 hours away now. Anytime we would go to Southern CA to see family, I always tagged on a few DL days. This meant braving the crowds right after New Years. It was insane (this was during the first year of Cars Land). I did arrive at rope drop, and just managed my expectations as the day went on. We still had a great time even though there were crowds.
Because of that trip, I decided to give the summer season a try. We go every year now for the last few days of June and the first few days of July. It is my favorite time to go now...long hours, full entertainment and the weather was pleasant (at least compared to Sept).
I am also going around the same time (9th-12th). Get there for rope drop, use FP and enjoy yourself.
Any day at DLR is better than being at work IMO.

Would you cancel or reschedule your trip if you knew it would be crowded? If not then there's really no point in worrying because there's nothing else you can do about it.

Add extra time if you can. We just had a trip that was half great crowd wise and half busy. Another half day in the morning would have been great.
Otherwise, just manage your expectations. You may not get everything done but that's ok. Make a list of your top priorities and do those first. The parks may get crowded but at opening they are empty. Get there before opening to maximize the first few hours for rides because that time is golden. Prioritize shows and entertainment for later in the day and allow extra time to wait for parades, etc.

If you find yourself overwhelmed with crowds either leave the park for a break or do a chill activity like TSI, Animation Academy, or Redwood Creek trail.

I have found that the best thing to do is manage expectations. I have had a better time on days I knew it would be crowded than on days I thought it would be empty but was not -- even though the crowds were smaller on unexpectedly crowded days.

Come in with the mindset that you will be waiting in lines you would prefer not to wait in, and save stuff like Mr. Lincoln or shows for the crowded midday period (or leave the parks for a break). Plan ahead when you want to get something to eat or drink, and don't wait until the last second to use the restroom (or make your kids go frequently even if they protest). If you are in the right frame of mind, you can still have a wonderful time.

Depends on why you hate crowds, I think. If someone just hates being around that many people, I could see it being a problem. If it is due to length of time waiting for rides and such, that is easier to manage.

Due to my husband's job, we frequently go to DL for weekends and holidays. We plan ahead, make sure we take breaks, and look on the bright side. I can't stress enough that going during busy times, be sure to stay hydrated and fed because otherwise you will get super cranky. We plan our meals to be a lot of table service to have a break from the crowds and not have to fight for space. You can also alleviate a long wait for counter service just by eating at off times. The difference between an 11:30 lunch and 12:30 lunch is huge.

We eat and shop when other people aren't. Shopping just before closing is a nightmare and sure to test the patience of a saint. Instead, shop in the afternoon and have them hold your packages or shop and take a break and take your purchases back to the hotel.

We go early, leave at peak crowd times, and return and stay until closing. Some people think this is wasting time, but it is actually maximizing time at the least crowded parts of the day. Most people can't make 8am rope drop and midnight closing several days in a row. It makes more sense to be there for rope drop and closing and take a nap in the middle of the day then to stay for the super crowded afternoon and not be able to make it to closing when the crowds disperse. Plus a couple hours away from the park can really give you a mental break that helps when dealing with crowds.

These are all strategies to make the day better. I actually prefer to go during busy times because the Resort is prepared for it. The staffing is at maximum, the rides are running with all cars, the hours are longer, and there is more entertainment. The golden hours in the morning are longer, I can usually get between two and three hours before it gets crazy. When DL opens at 10am, it is busy almost immediately.

Busy times are also a reason to look into package options for shows where reasonable. They have more value in my opinion when crowds are higher.

What time would you leave the park after a crowded day morning. To try and be back by 4 or 5 in the afternoon?

So which is better? 11:30 or 12:30?

We are in the same boat. We booked a trip for 6-11 as well and initially thought that crowds would be moderate. However, I agree that it will Be very busy. We are doing what others have suggested. That is, to manage expectations. In addition, we will arrive before rope drop and try to do as much as possible in the first few hours. Save shows and entertainment for later in the day.

We always go to Disney during slower times but this year we did an extended family trip in March during Spring Break. It was very busy plus Soarin', Splash and Matterhorn were down for the 60th refurb which put more pressure on the other rides with those biggies being down.

Even with this we still had an amazing time. We made sure we took advantage of RD and utilized our FP's and we were able to do everything we wanted to multiple times including all of the night time shows.

We went in expecting to wait longer for things than we normally do and we have a great trip.

Enjoy your trip!

This is such a great thread, I am so glad I stumbled upon it, there is a lot of useful information here :goodvibes. We are planning our second DLR trip for the second week of June and I am expecting some heavy crowds while we are there. Luckily we will be staying onsite (VGC) so we will be able to utilize the EMH. We are also planning on taking lots of breaks in the afternoon when the crowds are at their highest, and I have already told my DH that he has to make sure he has his running shoes on because he will be running for FPs...he loves the fact that DLR still does paper FPs because he knows how to really utilize them.

What do you all recommend for nights? We usually go during slow times but will be there Dec 9-16, so I'm reading this and taking notes!

I do regret going when it is too crowded to even walk down Main St. The last time I went (about 2 years ago), it was so bad that I swore I'd never go again. Now, I am trying to get in a one day visit before then of the year. If you have park hopper, you can just switch parks if one is too busy. Also, go early in the day. My daughter lives in the area and visits frequently. She said it's really hard to walk on main street in the evenings and the workers there told her if she visits during the day, it won't be like that.

You will be there for 5 days. You'll certainly be able to do everything you want to do and you'll have a feel for when it is time to switch parks after the first day. Have a great trip.

On a side note...I think the week we are going will be busy possibly...but not too crazy.

Thanks for the replies so far, I can manage expectations but it's the not being able to walk around like a normal person is what's hard to think about. Plus the other times we've gone we've never had to bother with Early Entry etc., we've had enough days to do what we want and be lazy and slow. The crowds, having to get up super early (for us), possible cranky husband to boot. It's making me worry. Funny, before I was worried about weather, now I am more worried about crowds.

If it weren't for all that stuff closing next year, I probably would just cancel the trip. We've never been at xmas time (always wanted to), never seen F! (always wanted to) and even reserved a BB F! reservation for this trip. I will gladly eat $200 cancel fee to keep husband less cranky though. I thought going during the 60th would be a neat bonus. ha!

Please keep posting if you have any experience and I will keep talking to my family. See if they would still be into it if it were very busy, and I will keep reading about how it actually is to be there when it's that busy. Pragmatic advice, etc.

I'm thinking about scheduling a character breakfast at Minnie's for a busy morning (so go in, do as much as we can, breakfast latest we can). Would that be a good idea or should we set it up on an EMH morning early? We have APs and are staying off site, so no early entry privileges.

I'm also thinking of doing F! On a busy day as well. Good idea?

I hate crowds, and try to go during the least crowded times of the year. However, I have been at super crowded times in December, as well as the middle of summer. I will never do summer again. I have learned that I can handle heat, and I can handle crowds, but I cannot handle both at the same time. It was too much and I kind of do regret going. It left kind of a sour taste in my mouth.

That's why I am going back one last time before my AP expires, the week of Thanksgiving. I know that it will be crowded, but I've dealt with that before and it's not a huge deal to me as long as I don't feel like I am going to pass out from insane humidity.

I have found that the crowds only really start to become a serious bother around parade times on Main Street, or around Fantasmic! show time in New Orleans Square. I also try to avoid entering/exiting Tomorrowland on the Main Street side in the afternoons, as there is a huge bottleneck right in front of Star Tours and Buzz Lightyear that crams everyone together into a small space. I've had more than one leg bruise due to strollers/wheelchairs in this area. Typically I do Tomorrowland first thing in the morning so that I can ride Space Mountain and Star Tours repeatedly with minimal lines, and so that I can avoid Tomorrowland later in the day.

Otherwise, even on really crowded days people are dispersed enough that it's not a continual nuisance. As already mentioned, eat meals during off times. This not only means shorter lines for food, but also means that you will have shorter lines/less crowds elsewhere while most others are eating.

Take advantage of FP and keep checking wait times through the app of your choice. Head to whatever has the shortest lines. On really busy days, certain rides tend to break down more frequently (Indiana Jones, I'm looking at you). If you are paying attention, you may be lucky enough to get in line just after the ride has re-opened.

Another good strategy is starting at DLR when there are no crowds, then moving over to DCA in the afternoons. The paths are built wider there, so even high crowds feel like much less people than at DLR.

You will find other strategies along the way just based on observation. For example, you will probably notice that the wait for the train is always longer at New Orleans Square and Toontown, but practically non-existent at Tomorrowland station. And certain paths are less crowded than others; when moving from Fantasyland to Frontierland/New Orleans Square, go the back way past the Big Thunder Ranch area, or go through the Fantasy Faire area, don't go through the more crowded Main Street.

If I were you, I would not cancel just because of crowds. Especially with 5 days, I think you will have plenty of time to explore what you want to. With just some slight schedule adjustments, you will be ahead of the pack and can really enjoy your trip. And hey, if you get really sick of navigating the parade crowds, just plop down and join them! Have your designated runner go grab some corn dogs (or my personal favorite, chimichangas) and relax for a bit.
