I have another question...

E doesn't have his appt. until May 21st and will probably have surgery. How did they go in to fix it? Were your boys left with a scar across the abdomen? Was it general anesthesia? I wigs me out to have him go under. I know he will have to but I'm a little scared.

I know this is NOTHING compared to what some parents go through but for someone who has had two healthy kids and no major problems, this is scary.

Thanks in advance!

Our oldest ds had the surgery at 17 months. First make sure you have a good PEDIATRIC surgeon. The took him first in the morning. Nothing to drink past midnight. That was the hardest. He wanted a bottle when he woke up but we just gave him the pacifier. They told us we had two options. They could sedate him a little before they took him into the operating room if he was really out of control or they would sedate and iv him in the or. Well guess what, the anesthesiologist came, scooped him up with his nice pooh blanket sleeper on and away they went., no crying, no meds, no nothing. DH was crying. I was crying a little but told him I would spend most of my time in prayer. The nurse came to give us updates. The dr. told us ahead of time, they would check both sides since more than likely they find a hernia on the "unaffected" side as well . Sure enough, he had 2 hernias plus he had a huge hydrocele, sac filled of fluid. He came out with 2 little scars, one on each side. Only bad part was he threw up from the bottle of oj we gave him. So they just gave us a bottle of water for him. He had tylenol and tried to climb on the couch the next day. He saw he couldnt do that for a few days. He was back to his normal self in about 2 days except for climbing. He had to go for all the pre op stuff at the hosp, like urine, blood tests etc.

My son had surgery when he was 13mo old and they put him under for it. The surgery lasted for only an hour but for a worried mom in the waiting room it seemed like 10. I remember I had the worst headache that day from worrying so much. We went in about 6 in the morning. I put him in a gown and they gave him an oral sedative. My husband carried him to the OR and laid him down on the table. When it was over they came out to get me and I got to be there in recovery with him when he woke up. They had repaired both sides and he has bandages on. When he woke up he was very irritable but then calmed back down and went back to sleep. We took him home around 2pm that same day.
When he got back home he woke up and tried to stand up but couldn't because the anesthia was still working a little on him, finally he went back to sleep and slept the rest of the day. He was a little sore and we had to watch him for fever, but he was up and playing the next day.
He is 7 now and you really can't even see the 2 scars unless you look very closely. The incision was very low, about where the top of his underwear is.
I know how scared you are. Everyone kept saying how minor it is, but still its hard. Good luck, i'm sure he'll do fine!

Ugh, just reading the stories made me tear up. I'm a pretty tough chick but when it comes to my babies, I turn into a quivering lump. :) I'm sure everything will be fine. Thanks for the quick replies.

Our DS had it on both sides at 6 weeks. They put him under completely. We know how you feel. Just pray that Gods hands are on the surgeons and all those helping.

He had to go back when he was 5. That area was very thin walled for a long time but so far all is well. He is 9 now. The incisions arent noticeable at all these days. We still remind him to be careful when he gets in a strain all the while letting him still be a boy and have fun.

Prayers coming your way for all to go well.
Jimmy

Well, I'm not really a 'baby' but just recently had the same surgery. Major hernia on one side, partial hernia on the other, and a hydrosele repaired.

I have two small scars and another inside my belly button - you really can't see any of the scars anymore.

Good luck with your little one!
