For those of you in California...

:grouphug: I'm so sorry to hear about this. I must admit that I had no clue whatsoever what Proposition 8 was (hey, I'm Canadian...and straight;) ), but I Googled it and read some info from several different sources to get both sides of the picture.

That being said...well, there isn't really much I can say other than the good old "the more things change, the more they stay the same". I'm starting to think that "marriage" as it is seen traditionally is becoming more and more of a...joke? Meaningless word? This whole thing is telling me that a man and a woman who get drunk in Vegas can go into a chapel and get "married" after knowing each other for 5 minutes (and the union will be legally recognized in CA), but that Jack and Joe, who have been partners for 27 years, can do the same thing and it means absolutely nothing in a legal sense. It all just disgusts me.

One has to wonder if someone wrote a law making divorce illegal, and called it the "marriage sancity protection act" if it would pass? Do people actually read the propositions, or do many voter go by the title only?

Gosh, would the "Marriage Sanctity Act" also force everyone back to their first spouse, too?

I think it should! ::yes::

I’ve been trying to deal with all of my frustration over Florida, California, Arizona (and Arkansas) and trying to keep a sense of humor. I could fly to Vegas and marry a guy one day and then divorce him the next and that’s ok. I could walk down the street with a semi-automatic weapon, kill a bunch of people and although I might get locked up for a while I could still marry a man. But I couldn’t marry another woman no matter how loving or committed our relationship might be.

All of these propositions are based on other people imposing their opinions on us. Now I haven’t done any research but I know that in most states to get something on the ballot all you need to do is get a certain number of signatures ... I think we can handle that! So I suggest that we create a proposition and call it something like the "Marriage Protection Proposition" or "Family Strength Amendment" with some vague wording that it is designed to "enhance the institution of marriage and family structure". Since most people don’t take the time to educate themselves they probably won’t read any further & we can push through a whole bunch of stuff like:
- in order to marry all couples must provide college diplomas (hey, if you’re not willing to put the work into college then you probably aren’t willing to put effort into marriage, plus it might weed out some really stupid folks!)
- divorce will now be illegal (sanctity seems to be mighty important!)
- married couples must adopt (this will give all kids a happy loving home). Now this one could be tricky - I say every couple has to adopt at least one until all the kids have homes and then if there are any left over we’ll go down the list alphabetically.
- marriages must be performed on Tuesdays (no real reason here, just that Tuesday seems to be an ‘off’ day and the weekends are too busy)
- marriage license fees will be increased to $1000 and all funds will be deposited into HRC (we’ll tell them it stands for Happy Responsible Couples)

I think we've got people here representing all the affected states so let's start moving! :thumbsup2

Come on now I thought we were all being friends. :confused3 I'm all supporting gay rights & marriage 7 then you go & curse me w/ having to be married to my 1st husband. Now that's just not nice. And I've know a few homosexuals have tried the man/woman marriage thing earlier in their lives. Now lets all just play nice & not wish naught things on our friends. :rotfl: :rotfl2:
