Me too, and this isn't an age jab, but I'm only going to be 30 so I've had to pick myself up off the ground a lot less times than lots of the folks around here. Even then I know it gets harder each time.

Gang, there's discussion on this on the Community Board. You're all preaching to the choir and agreeing with each other. That serves NO purpose. Go to the Community Board and be heard by others that normally don't read here.

At least I know I changed one friend's mind (all of the rest agreed with me). She started quoting the bible and I shut her up with "what happened to separation of church and state?" She's married to a man not born in the US so I gave her the thought of how maybe next we should ban marriages between US born citizens and non US born. She rolled her eyes and said "its not his fault he wasnt born here" The look on my face must have said it all because she started back tracking immediately. I know she was still undecided up until she went to the polls but she told me she ended up voting NO.

unfortunately all of my YES ON 8 sign disposing crusades, spreading the word, and supporting those NO on 8 corner dwellers didnt work.

Shame on you YES Californian voters. :sad2:

That's just it. The courts in California interpret the California Constitution which has just been amended. There's no way the California Courts can overturn this. It means an amendment to repeal it, or Federal intervention (either legislative or judicial).
 
I'm so sorry for the passing of Prop 8. As a straight person, I tried really hard to get the word out.

I also am a straight Californian who is very, very disappointed by the bigotry that was voted in last night.

While Americans are patting themselves on the back for their lack of racial discrimination by voting in an African American president, I think this is a clear indication of how very far we as a nation have to go.

Gay or straight, prop 8 has legalized discrimination and that makes me ill.

You know, I also am thinking this today. I'm mad at myself that I didn't do more to help defeat this (well, besides flipping off the Yes on 8 picketers and shouting "bigot" from my car as I drove by).

To all my friends down south in the USA, you have my sympathies on what just happened with Prop. 8 (CA), 2 (FL) and 102 (AZ) with respect to bans on gay marriage.

I was just in California last week and the hopes were very high that No would prevail on 8. I didn't sleep well last night knowing what was happening with the voting. Today I see the terrible results of hatred at the USA voting stations.

Although Zulumara is right about "stay put and fight", many can't wait to protect their exisiting families - as they need marriage to protect them and what children they may have.

For those who can't wait (or no patience to fight anymore), think of moving up to Canada . . . we settled this issue 3 years ago as a nation! Canada would welcome those denied the basic human right of marriage.

For those of you staying put to continue the fight, good for you. Do NOT give up the fight with those religious idiots who are denying your human rights. You've all put up a great battle so far!

PS: I can't BELIEVE that propositions regarding human rights can be voted on like this! :scared1:

We take a step BACK as a nation by taking rights away from citizens. How unconstitutional. Even though I am a citizen of MA and we are legal, in the eyes of the country, we are all 2nd class citizens.
I am very upset.

On the bright side, at least we won't be sent to Queer Island since Palin's out of the picture. :lmao:

I've never visited this forum before, but I, also, felt the need to come here and apologize on behalf of the 50% or so of Californians who yesterday proved themselves to be bigots. I'm extremely saddened that my state, which has always held a reputation as liberal, open-minded and intellectual, has so thoroughly lost its way. I'm ashamed of our actions. And, I'm very sorry for those this will effect, particularly my former co-worker and his husband. I cannot abide seeing my friends having their rights taken away from them.

Separate but equal has never worked. I only wish my fellow Californians were smart and decent enough to realize it. We are a nation based on the idea that all men are created equal... it's shameful how little we do to uphold that national ideal. :sad2:
 
I was so deeply upset this morning when I found out about Prop 8 passing. It disgusts me that people are taking rights away from any group of people.
 
Hi everyone - I just wanted to say how sorry I am about how everything went with Prop 8. Dh's uncle is a gay man - and even though I doubt all of Texas would ever see it the way we do - we were really hopeful for everyone. One day soon, hopefully all this hate will be a part of the past.

I remember a certain bit of paper saying:-

Maybe someone should check it with a magnifying glass to see if the word "straight" is written between the "all" and the "men" in really little letters... :(

Rick, normally I would agree with you, but I have been blasted a few times by mentioning this type of thing on that board (I tend to stay well clear of it actually!). I think what we are doing here is commiserating and just venting frustration that could be nasty if met with resistance.

And as a side note, thank you all the straight folks who chose to wander over here and give condolences. It is appreciated and felt by all I am sure.
 
I'm so sorry this happened guys. :grouphug: I am bi and although I am married to a man, it could have just as easily been with a woman.

I mean, we just elected our first African American president and we're taking away the rights of people to marry? :confused3 Does that make any sense? :scared1: I think, how would these homophobic, right-wing bigots feel if someone came and told them they couldn't be married anymore?! :mad:

Being born and raised in CA, I was sorry to see this amendment pass. However, surely people realize that in a few years, same-sex marriage will be accepted by a growing segment of society and eventualy be allowed.

In a way, you can't reeally blame the older people that voted against it. They were raised in a time where you simply accepted what you were told by your doctors, your government officials, etc. You never questioned the medications you were prescribed. You never looked at anything the government said as mere "propoganda" as we do today. Remember that even police departments in the 40s and 50s put out anti gay "informational" films. McCarthy-ism was accepted by many in society. School desks could protect you from nuclear attacks, duck & cover.

Change in society takes time. I know the time is coming, even they know it is coming, it just isn't here, yet. :( But very soon.
 
When Obama won, I finally felt like the citizens of the US weren't such a close minded group of folks. It just seemed all was right w/ the world. Today, to know that people still have so far to go to make all people equal makes me very sad. I sure hope you won't let this stop any of you who want to from getting married. The law may not recognize it, but GOD WILL. Be patient my dear friends. The next 4 years are full of possibilities. Don't hang your head down in sadness, throw your hands up in celebration that we are moving forward as a country & have a new presidents that believe in equal rights for all.

To all in the gay community, just know it isn't only your straight family & friends that support you. There are many straight people who don't know anyone that is gay that are still 100% behind gay rights. When its the right thing to do, you just know.
