For those against Sea World....yet another question

I am always confused by why people get upset about the Orcas in captivity, but not dolphins, sea lions, beluga whales etc. They have just as much right to be free and not performing/forced to interact with people. I've been to the local aquarium and they have all of these different animals performing in the show. Again, I know I am a hypocrite and will admit that for going. I don't see anyone getting upset about zoos, aquariums, epcot, castaway cay. All IMO are mistreatment of animals. So why be so upset about one and not about the others. I think a place that is truly abusing their animals(which currently SW isn't except unessesary captivity) is one thing, but I saw no evidence in Blackfish that is what SW is doing. Their practices early on(70's/80's) were bad, but I gurantee that all these places were operating like that b/c of ignorance. Now that wouldn't be tolerated in the US and many other countries. I do think that unless an animal is injured or endangered they should not be in captivity...not even WDW style captivity. It isn't right, but we try to tell ourselves giraffes running around AK are happy, elephants at the zoo are well kept. The truth is we don't know how these animals feel. Most likely they are miserable, but as long as they exisit people will go b/c otherwise you wouldn't see many of these creatures and kids love it. Right or wrong it is just the way things are.

Google Ric O'Barry Dolphin Project, Sea Shepherd Cove Guardians, Free Disney Dolphins. You'll find there are hundreds of thousands of people out there that are outraged by cetacean (whale, dolphin, porpoise) captivity and slaughter.

I guess I didn't state that clearly. I know there are lots of groups against it. I mean people in general. The people here on this site or friends and neighbors. Blackfish comes out and people get on their soapbox about boycotting SW and I understand why, but look at what you are not upset about(and by you I mean the person boycotting SW but still going to Epcot or Castaway Cay and other similar places). Again, I will admit I will take my children to a zoo or aquarium once a year(even though I feel guilty when I am there) so I do contribute to the problem. In a perfect world they all would be free unless they were not capable of living in their natural environment. I just think the calls for the boycott are mostly from people who think that the other places are OK.

That's backwards logic. AB "supports" GM and Alcoa by giving them money for their product. GM and Alcoa aren't "supporting" AB.

Yes they are to the "boycott" crowd. By doing business with AB, GM and Alcoa are enabling AB to prosper, which is contrary to the objective of the boycotters (they want AB change its policies, which is has absolutely no incentive to do as long as business is going well).

So if people here say they are going to boycott AB, they are undermining their cause if they patronize the firms that provide products and services to their target ;)

Busch Gardens Williamsburg is still on my list of places that I plan to go to.

It's a beautiful park! I think you'll enjoy it.

But,but, but........:)

Marineland here in Ontario and SeaWorld in Orlando have virtually zilch in common. I have been to both (multiple times each).

Marineland is a completely "for show" facility. There's no animal rescue, no marine rehabilitation, no real educational purpose to their park. Its dingy and dreary and sad (and a poor place to spend your money in Niagara Falls, IMHO).

The condition of the Marineland park facilities are worlds away from those at SeaWorld. Enough that I have no problem believing the accusations found in this article:

http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2012/08/15/marineland_animals_suffering_former_staffers_say.html

I, for one, will NEVER return to Marineland. But SeaWorld is our go-to park in Orlando (as well as DC & Aquatica).

But to your specific question......yes, many Canadians are against Marineland. But quite honestly, it doesn't seem to be the "animals in captivity" issue that have people avoiding the park. Its the condition of the park itself and the very obvious poor quality of care that the dolphins, whales and sea lions are receiving.

I know I actually have been there a few times. Actually I grew up not to far from it right outside of Buffalo so I actually went to Marineland before I ever even knew what Sea World was. I just have never heard complaints so I was just wondering not that I thought they have the same issues.

It's kind of like the anti-Wal*Mart thing. There are far worse places to work, but everyone knows what Wal*Mart is.

It's where they sell walls right :rotfl2:

(sorry Paris Hilton joke):lmao:

I think you hear fewer complaints because its such a small establishment in comparison to the American theme parks, so despite the very obvious problems there, it just gets less overall press.

That, and we Canadians are pretty easy going folks by nature :rotfl: . It takes a LOT for us to get steaming mad, even when complete outrage is warranted ;) .

This is not an argument thread so if you feel the need to argue for Sea World please take it else where. I know there are like 50 sea world threads but didn't want my question to be lost in the arguments or most are closed now right?

SO anyway my question is if you are not ever going back to Sea World will you visit the other Bush Garden parks?

We live near Williamsburg and have been pass holders pretty much since we moved here. BUT I feel this guilt like we are still supporting Sea World even if I ever stepped foot in there ever :confused3

Thoughts?

no - i live in the uk.

i doubt i would ever visit a zoo again.

i dont agree with animals in captivity.

the meaning of the word capivity says in all.

We also have season passes to all of the Busch parks & yes, we will continue to go to them all simply because we enjoy it. There are many things in this world that I do not agree with, but I'm going to do what makes me & my family happy & I am not going to deprive us of something over it. SeaWorld also does a lot of things to help & I will not overlook that either.

yep - this is why Seaworld can keep animals in captivity - as long as someone and their kids are having a good time - regardless of having an animal in captivity- they dont care they will still go through the park gates.- it all about them and their family in their eyes - nothing else matters.

But if no one goes to Sea World, would they stay open? Would the parent company continue to pump money into a losing business? Even if people are buying beer, going to other parks, would they take that money and put it into Sea World? I don't think so.

Your boycott theory makes no sense.

I think you missed the point of my post. It was to show that those here announcing they are going to boycott SeaWorld -- while acting with moral intentions -- are also unintentionally engaging in ineffectual grandstanding. They are minority that are not going to have any meaningful impact on attendance at the parks. So I was pointing that out by showing that they are not truly focused on damaging Sea World unless they go after not only the parent company but also organizations that enable it to prosper.

And as far as a theory making no sense, your positing "if no one goes to Sea World" is with all due respect the one that really doesn't add up. Do you literally think the Blackfish apostles are going to convince every single potential visitor to Sea World to turn away?
