I apologize if I am posting some old news, but I thought some pet owners may not be aware of a new product. I have been using Frontline Plus on my fur-babies since we adopted them, and it is quite expensive. But it works, so I was hesitant to try anything new. I mentioned the cost of Frontline to my vet and he suggested I try Advantage, even though he seemed to prefer the Frontline. The Advantage is slightly cheaper, and the reviews for it are about the same as Frontline. I went ahead and bought 6 months' worth of the Advantage and will start using it next week when my cats are due their monthly dose of flea/tick medicine. While at Walmart tonight buying new cat toys, I saw something new called Petarmor. It is a clone of Frontline Plus, and it costs...an unbelievable $25 for 3 doses! I have been paying $50 for 3 doses of Frontline, and just paid $52 for 4 doses of Advantage! When I was comparing the ingredients in Advantage and Frontline two weeks ago, I memorized the ingredients in Frontline(they are not the same ingredients used in Advantage). Petarmor is exactly like Frontline! I came home and googled it, and apparently Frontline's patent expired, allowing other companies to manufacture the same same drug(sort of like generic drug manufacturers). If Advantage does not work any better than Frontline did for me, I will definitely start using the Petarmor.

On a side note, my neighbor stopped using Frontline in favor of Revolution on the advice of her vet. When my vet quoted the price of Revolution(because it is prescription), I asked if it was REALLY that good. He said a lot of cat owners loved it because it protects against ticks, fleas, and several types of worms, all in one monthly dose. I know a lot of people on the DIS boards have mentioned it as well. I think for now I'll just keep using Drontal every 3 months for worm prevention. But I would not mind a generic version of Revolution in the future!

I have always used Advantage. I do not know why the vets prefer it. Twice, once a LONG time ago and once just last fall, I tried Frontline and it did NOTHING. Now I'm using it for fleas, only when needed and it's rare. I have no idea why we had a flea issue this last fall but we did. I went to my vet for advantage and they don't carry it and said frontline is better anyway. I knew better but it had been a long time so I got the frontline. Over a week later and I'm still pulling fleas off my girls every day. I was not pleased. I knew of another vet clinic I thought sold Advantage, went and got some. Within 2 days the fleas were gone, never to return. Baffles me why people like frontline, but maybe is has something to do with my dogs? :confused3 I don't know.

As far as I know Advantage does not do anything for ticks, though I'm thinking I recently heard that they have come up with something that does, no idea. We don't have tick issues. But yes, Advantage works for fleas and you save money, enjoy!! :goodvibes

I have seen the commercials for the Petarmor product on tv this past week. Looks like it is only sold at Walmart and Sam's according to what the commercial says. I certainly plan on looking into it this week. That's a great price.

My dog has so many allergies that the only thing I have been able to use is Frontline Plus. I won't change for that reason mainly, but I feel if it has been working all along, I am not going to trust another brand. Not when it comes to fleas and ticks!

I do not like or use Frontline it has been used to long and the fleas are immune to it. I never been to a vet that recommended frontline we used to use K9 advantix it is supposed to prevent ticks as well. After about a year of using I found tick on one of my dogs we now use Promeris is more expensive but it works, it is also the latest product released. For our cats we use advantage multi because it also prevents heartworm we never had any problems.

Bayer has 3 different products. Advantage(dogs and cats), which has been updated to Advantage II, kills fleas only at the adult, larva and egg stage. Advantix (DOGS ONLY), which is also updated to Advantix II has the same as Advantage plus kills and repels ticks and flies. These are topical (not absorbed) and are non-prescription. There is also Advantage multi (dogs and cats) which kills fleas, prevents heartworm and 3 kinds of intestinal parasites. This is absorbed (heartworm preventative) and is prescription medication.

Frontline Plus is still a favorite product by many. There is still some arguments over the patent pending, so this new product may or may not be around very long.......or others are waiting until the laws are clear to manufacture generics. Haven't seen or tried it myself, as I get free Frontline as a job perk.....but the active ingredient is the same and it should work the same. As with any generic......not all are created equal.

regards

I have MULTIPLE furbabies. My cats get advantage, my dogs get advantix. Frontline didn't work for them At All. We have gotten to the point that the only way to insure that the advantix works they way I think it should is to also spray our yard every 6-8 weeks.

I used Frontline on my dogs for years, along with Interceptor for worm prevention, but recently had to switch to a new product. The Frontline just stopped working. I have NEVER seen fleas on my dogs until about 6 weeks ago. I am religious about using the Frontline monthly....and then I noticed my dogs itching a lot. Sure enough, they had fleas.

I spoke to my vet and they stopped carrying Frontline because so many people reported that it wasn't working. She is now recommending Comfortis.

So I wouldn't use a generic Frontline since the name brand doesn't work anymore!

My understanding is that anything that works will only work for so long, until local flea populations build a resistance to it. We're still doing okay with Frontline here but in our old neighborhood we had several neighbors who switched because it had stopped working. I dread the day we'll have to switch because our dog has developed some allergies/sensitivities as she's gotten older (to the point of needing gluten free food and getting her baths with baby shampoo) and I know she tolerates Frontline well.

thank you for posting this. i really appreciate this! what a savings!!! i will be checking out walmart for sure!!!

Good to know!

does anything actually repel ticks? we live near woods, and I can't keep them off the pets..... it's gross!the cats are the worst, but even the dog gets them like crazy,it is GROSS to wake up at night with a tick crawling on you!
frontline didn't do much for ticks,ever,IMO....

I had 3 dogs I purchased this flea medication for. I will never buy it again. The day after applying it my perfectly healthy 5 year old min pin died. A few days later my other min pin started getting raw spots on her neck and back. I took her to the vet and he said the raw spots were a chemical burn from this medication. The raw spots are only in areas that this medication came in contact with her skin. The areas are finally starting to heal but she's still in pain and it looks terrible. He also said that may have been what caused my other baby to die. We are now using Comfortis and it works great.

I have no idea what to use. I used Advantage for the first time on my 2 year old cat at the end of June. She itched like crazy for a little while and stared ripping out her fur:sad1:
She is pretty much bald all down her back. I took her back to the vet and he said "it's likely a flea allergy.. it could be a reaction to the Advantage but that's very rare". I disagree. This started exactly when I used the Adavntage and has never happened before. She is now taking prednisone.

Sorry for the slight t/j.. I just don't know if I should bother trying something new or not use anything again.

according to the receptionist at my vet's office. I saw it still at Sam's the other day but she said there had been consumer complaints about its application and absorption into the skin.

My suggestion is to price some of these products at Drs. Foster and Smith.

We've been using Frontline on all 3 of our fur babies for years and remain flea and tickless with no skin issues. Saving money sounds great but I'd rather stay with a product that I know works for us and that my babies tolerate well.
