I will be traveling to Ohio this summer and staying in Independence(among other locations) for a portion of our trip. DH would like to visit the Pro Football Hall of fame, so we figure if we visit that during the morning, we could spend the afternoon at Amish country. Is it worth a trip to Amish country? Someone told me that a place that has the largest Swiss clock would be a good place to visit. Any suggestions?

Sounds like a great idea. :) I can't think of any specific places to see, but go get some lunch, maybe take a buggy ride and check out all the craft-type stores, where you can find a lot of wonderful handmade items. It would be a nice way to spend a relaxing summer afternoon. :)

It has been at least 10 years since I have done anything like that, but I agree with Steve, that sounds like a perfect way to spend a summer afternoon to me :) Since it has been so long for me, I have no suggestions, but I would do lunch there if I were you. I remember one Saturday years ago, we drove out to Amish Country and had the best lunch and ice cream following.

Hopefuly someone can give you good specific places to visit :)

I too am coming to Ohio, but for Sandusky and Kings Island. I will be spending one day in Cinncinatti. Any ideas on what to do

One day in Cincy on top of the Kings Island day? Or is that day being spent in Kings Island?

Yes 3 days at KI and our final "day" after sandusky is in Cincinatti...we may just go back to KI..LOL

If you are already in Canton at the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Amish country is not too far away. You will probably want to visit Berlin (Ohio). Lots of nice restaurants and shops. My only advice is that you avoid visiting Amish country on Sunday. Obviously the Amish community spends that day in worship and they won't be at any of the shops that day. This is a fact that some people tend to forget in our modern 24/7 society.

Independence is right around the corner from us. If the timing is right, we'd love to share a meal with you when you're in NE Ohio.

Those of you visiting Ohio might want to check out our state's official website:

Have fun in the Buckeye State. :)

Towncrier: Being that your from the area, we chose Independence because it seems like a midway point between Canton, Cleveland and Aurora(Six Flags). Does this seem like a logical spot to stay at? Also, how long a ride should we expect from Independence to Sandusky?
Dax: When are you traveling to Sandusky? Are you staying at one of the on site Cedar Point hotels? We would also love to travel to KI, but it seems like such a hike!

Cindy - Independence is an ideal central location for the places that you are planning to visit. The drive to Cedar Point should take less than 90 minutes. It's about 70 miles from Independence to CP.

If you stay at a Cedar Point owned property overnight, you get early entry into the park the following morning. Otherwise, there are many motels in the vicinity of CP. I have reservations at a Days Inn that's about 6 miles from CP for a few nights this summer. My first stay there will be in a couple of weeks. If you are driving to CP from Independence, there's another Days Inn right at the Ohio Turnpike exit for CP. It's further from the park, but it might be a bit less expensive.

Thanks for the info Towncrier. We opted to stay at Breakers in the hopes we can ride Dragster early! It's pretty pricey, but we have 3 DD's and it is worth the convenience!

Towncrier's right -- Independence is a perfect centralized spot for all the locations you've mentioned. Plus, there's a number of restaurants right on the same street (Rockside) and easy access to the two major highways you'll take to all three areas (I-77 to Canton and I-480 East and West to Aurora and Sandusky).

Have a great trip! :)

Another Ohioian checking in..We go to Amish country at least once a year. Berlin has all the great shops. We love to eat at Der Dutchman or The Amish Door. Also you can tour an Amish farm. It is very interesting to learn more about their culture.

Anyone else amused that the Amish have a website? ;)

We will be in Sandusky on June 23 through the 27. We have not decided on a place, was thinking about the Comfort Inn Sandusky. Looks nice any opinions.

While at KI, we are staying at a Wingate Inn about 10 mi from KI. I love the Wingate.

I also wanted to know how far is Six Flags from CP?

CP to Six Flags is about a 1 1/2 hour drive. It's actually a pretty straight shot across the OH turnpike from Sandusky to Aurora. :)

According to Microsoft Streets and Trips, it's 1 hour 40 minutes and about 90 miles from Cedar Point to Six Flags in Aurora. Steve is right about it being a straight shot. You can take the Ohio Turnpike for 90% of the trip.

We go down to Amish every few weeks or so.
Don't forget to stock up on bulk items, the best Swiss cheese is Guggisburg. They also have a great Amish butter cheese. We like to eat at the Amish Door, great salad bar! Don't forget some award winning wine at Breitenbach winery. Of course there are loads of craft places and furniture stores. You can go to Grandma Shearer's potato chip factory in Brewster, yum and then to Brewster cheese.

Which area/town in Amish country has a great amount of shops/restaurants congested in one area? We probably will not be able to visit a lot of places in 1 day.

Berlin is the biggest group of shops but you will be able to cover ALOT of the area in one day. We always just spend a day over there and that includes 90 mins driving time one way. :)

Yoder's Amish Farm is a must see.
