My family and I just returned from our first driving experience to WDW, and I recommend it without reservation to anyone who is considering it.
We left from Albany, NY at 2:20 AM on June 20, and arrived at the Beach Club at 8:00 AM, June 21.
By leaving early in the morning (late at night) we avoided all major traffic along the I95 corridor. This allowed us to make it to Santee, SC, by 3:00 PM June 20. We stopped at the Best Western, Santee. We swam, ate at Cracker Barrel, and were in bed by 7:00 PM. We awoke at 2:00 and were on our way down 95. We made it to The Beach Club by 8:00 AM. I logged about 19 hours of drive/break time on the way down. Yes, you actually to log a lot of miles cruising at 75-80 miles an hour as the posted speed limit is 70 beginning in NC.
Going home, we left the Beach Club at 9:00, June 28. I decided to take the alternate route of 95/26/77/81. This allowed us to avoid the I95 corridor on Monday morning. The drive home along 81 is far more scenic, but for the beauty to exchange services. There are very few hotel/motel/restaurants/gas/clean bathrooms right off the interstate along this route. We stopped in Charlotte, NC at around 7:30 PM. We left Charlotte around 8:00 Am Monday morning and arrived in Albany at 7:00 PM. We hit traffic in Scranton.
The ride home was a bit longer than the ride down, but we were driving during the day, and it was a work day rather than the weekend. I think we arrived home sooner than had I tried to drive through the megalopolis that is DC/Baltimore/Philly/NYC during rush hour.
Hope this helps, and I am happy to answer any questions.
