We normally drive to FL in (mid) July but decided this year to go during the winter break in February. We also usually take the I-81 route from MA but I am concerned about that route in the winter. Maybe I-95 is the better choice this time?

my winter route is i78/i81/i66/17/i95. I stay out of those mountains in the winter. heck this year you have to worry about snow and ice into Georgia.

I know.

Today is the four year aniversary of the first leg of our 2010 Orlando trip. It was a Friday. We were supposed to leave Friday early evening and drive to my in-laws in Knoxville. However, due to a imminent winter storm, we left about 12 hours early. We still hit ice in Northern Georgia. We stopped just south of Atlanta that night. The winter weather warning extended to just north of Atlanta.

Here is my account of that drive.

Thinking of those in the Atlanta area (and throughout the South) today.

Thanks!

Hopefully the weird weather down south will clear up by Mid-Feb.

17 on the weekends can get backed up. last month we hit it on a Friday around 4pm and it was fine. we came home on a sunday and south bound was backed up for miles. didn't see anything other then a lot of cars in one place.
17 will drop you on i95 just north of Richmond. over the years we have gotten lucky. we don't take the by pass we stay on 95 all the way. Richmond, jacksonville and also on i4 we stay on 4 thru Orlando.

there is no magical way it mostly luck and praying. :rotfl:

we learned our lesson back in the late 80s. we were on i81 in the mountains and back then you went miles with out seeing anything.
we spent the night in the car at whites truck stop. we were 21 years old so no big deal but never again. (im to old for that anymore :lmao:)
we will leave early, late to avoid weather. I think we have gone thru everything over the years. hurricane Wilma was fun.:lmao:

The weather always plays a role in one's travels, no matter what form of transportation is used.

The rain was so heavy as we entered Florida on one of our drives that we had to turn off I-95 at the next exit, which happened to be less than a mile's drive. Lucky for us. We ended up in Yulee, FL for the night.

Safe travels to all!

All the best. :thumbsup2

We'll be hitting the road in 12 hours. Not liking the forecast but not much we can do but take it slow and easy. We'll be going 31 from SW MI Indinapolis continuing on down.

Our planned arrival at Disney is sometime on Sunday so we have plenty of time built in (we think). I'll post tonight and tomorrow from whereever we land and let folks know what the roads are like.

Hug a mouse for us! :p

Thanks guys. I can' t wait to hug the mouse! We made it to Louisville last night. There was one bad spot in Kokomo, IN but other than that smooth travels. Right now we're on I-65 about 100 miles north of Nashville and nice dry roads and some sunlight poking through the clou
DS.

It's about 5:45 and we are at mile 40 of I-75 in Georgia. It's been an overall smooth travel day. We just booked a room at POP for the night. Hoping to land between 9:30 and 10. We' ll let the kids swim in the am and then a short drive to the Fort for the remainder of our stay.

Getting ready to head down this coming Friday with dw and ds(2). Going to stay 2 nights on the road, dw wants a slow leisurely trip down. She has already memorized the drive i95 book. Any recommendations as to where I can keep track of the weather that we may encounter other than my phones weather app? Must eat and must stay places. Thanks

We JUST did this... 2 nights on the road before arriving in Disney with a 2 year old. It was good in theory but I will never do that again. It was actually very rough on our 2 year old staying in so many hotels. Or maybe it was worse for us as the parents lugging in all the stuff you need for a toddler 3 days in a row. This was our third trip taking dd down, but we only stopped one night before arriving previously. We finally got home today and realized how big of a toll it took on us by dragging out the initial drive down. Another thing to think about is, does your child get car sick?? My daughter threw up 5 times between the drive down and drive home. I would recommend getting in touch with your pediatrician to see if there is something they can prescribe your child for car sickness just in case. Now that I probably scared you to death, if you do decide to take 2 nights to get down you should stay in one of the hotels in downtown Disney for your second night... we stayed at the holiday inn and had a 5 minute walk to downtown disney... it was great to have that walk to grab a quick dinner after doing all that driving.

driving around this morning in this mess and looking at my ticker, im not sure if I can wait that long!!!! :rotfl:

after the four trips in seven months having to wait seven months seems like foreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeever!!!!! :lmao:

I cant even con B into go down in june with me.:sad2: she said that's during baseball season and don't want to miss work. she is working for the iron pigs (Philadelphia Phillies AAA farm team) this year again. she was cut short last year after being accepted into the cp. she is adjusting well to the northern climate again. it looks like the cp alumni reunion is at my house this summer.:sad2:thats ok, they were a great bunch of kids.
she has started college again and is looking for a part time job. she has been working on a huge scrap book from her program and along with her, I am having a blast looking at all the cool stuff she did. it has been fun as friends and family have been asking her what was it like working in the mk. I like the "is there really an entire city under the mk"? :lmao:

I thought these were cool. she bought these frames from company d the store for cms. they are to put your name tags in them. she had one with the college and her home town so she got two of them. we have them hanging in the dining room.

anyway, back to normal programming. hope everyone heading down soon has nice travel weather. :thumbsup2

they are talking about a big storm sat into sunday this weekend. I use the weather channel ap. I put in about five "areas" town, cities along the way and just keep an eye on them. the ap also has real time weather radar.

im still set up from December and I used my hometown in pa, Richmond va, Fayetteville nc ,savannah ga and walt Disney world. you wouldn't need that many because the radar can cover the entire east coast but it also gives you by the hour, 36 hour and ten day. good idea to keep an eye on it while your in florida.
have a safe trip! :thumbsup2

We also use a number of cities on our smart phone weather app: Baltimore, Richmond, Fayetteville and Savannah. And, of course, lake Buena Vista (which is 86-degrees and partly cloudy at this moment!).

All the best. :lmao:

We will 100% be coming to a game this year. Is she warm yet?? Did she keep my ears green sequin ones)?

I haven't been on here in weeks, sitting at home today in almost a foot of snow, it's beautiful and annoying for sure. Finally had some free time and decided to read the DISboards. Since we probably won't be going back until June 2015 I am not on here every day any more.
