We've done many trips to WDW, but are now planning the first road trip. It's the first drive for both the hubby and I, which should be an experience. It may also include a friend of ours and her 4.5 son, all packed in our Prius
Right now we are thinking of leaving from the Scranton, Pa area around 6pm on the June 6th. The hubby is done work then, and heading straight onto the road, driving down to just past Richmond. That would get us past the worst of the traffic problems at a quiet time to day, and timewise would put us about near the end of our 'awake enough for driving' time. Get a hotel for the night and rise early and finish the drive Saturday. We are looking at driving 95 for the down trip, but maybe going the mountain route on the way home. I know the corrider from Richmond to Baltimore is the main traffic headache. While we can avoid the rush hours on the way down, I don't think we can on the way back.
Any suggestions for the driving newbies? Especially if we have the little one with us. I have the special fun of severe motion sickness, so even with medication-and I will be medicated-I can't do anything besides listen to music. All help and ideas are much appreciated.

We are about 70 days away from our first road trip from Houston to WDW. The original plan was to leave around 4pm on a Friday and try to drive straight through, but I am thinking now that may not happen. Thinking we may try to drive 8 to 9 hours that night, find a place to sleep and then get up around 6am and finish the rest of the drive.

I have been trying to find some cheap tickets to Orlando or Tampa. If I could get tickets for under $300 I would jump all over it.

PLan is 65-24-75 to the turnpike. Besides the century long construction in southern Georgia anyone aware of any issues on the roads.

I think there is still construction on I-65 in Kentucky around the Mammoth Caves area. Nothing to be concerned about since you'll be travelling it in the middle of the night. Road widening.

Lake City sounds like a good place to stop. You'll get there early Sunday evening and have a good night's sleep. Leave by 7 AM, and you'll be in the parks by 11. Just don't make the mistake we made and book a reservations at the Days Inn on I-10. That added about ten minutes to our trip both ways.

Plan on taking 95 down since we're leaving at night but thinking 81 on the way back? Although it's kind of out of the way since we live a half hour east of Philly.

We drove 95 from CT in August w a 4 and 2 year old and we loved it. It was great having our own car in WDW. We left at like 1 in the morning and made it to Savannah around 5pm with no traffic. On the way home we left around 4am and took the inland route to stop at my brother's in MD.....a nice ride and scenic through PA but slower and longer- but maybe since we left later and the kids didn't sleep for as much of it.

We are a mile west of the GSP and have always taken the I-95 route in both directions; in fact, thirty-one times since 2002. I-95, of course, can be problematic depending and the day and the time of day you drive it.

Meeee tooo. Our next driving trip will be in April as well. Hopefully we will be able to leave at a decent hour

We drove in Dec 2012 was delayed leaving by 4 hrs as we had to deal with Huricane Sandy stuff.

We took I-95 straight and will do it again.

we are home. we departed okw at 2pm Saturday morning and and got home last night at 6pm. we were switching drivers a lot because we both are sick.
we hit a little drizzle in florida but that was it, the rest was all sunshine and smooth sailing. there was a lot of traffic heading south. i81 south in pa was a mess, i95 starting at exit 130 was a mess. 17 heading south was backed up for miles.
it is off to philly airport to pick up briana on Saturday and the following week she starts school again. vacations over!!

Hello all! Disney newbie here! My boyfriend and I are taking our first ever Disneyworld trip in 2 weeks (both of us are in our 20s).

And, of course, we're driving from Upstate NY. We're planning to leave at 6am on Friday January 10 and stopping for the day once we hit Raleigh, NC (to visit a friend and stay the night there). We'll leave Raleigh at 6am Saturday morning to arrive at Disney (hopefully) by dinner time.

So to all you lovely people--any advice for first time drivers? How do you prepare your car for the trip?

P.S. I've been following these forums for months as I planned our trip. Wish I would have joined sooner! Looking forward to your advice!

Avoid the southern MD, DC, and northern VA area at rush hour. And expect lane closures in those aforementioned areas due to construction.

To be sure, your vehicle should be in good shape with a recent oil change, properly inflated tires and a clean windshield (inside and out).

Drive carefully and pay attention to speed limits (especially in VA where they can quickly change from 65 to 55).
And you will see trucks! Lots of 'em.
