It looks like sun every day for the next 10 days. except for a chance of showers on Sunday. Temps will be all over the place however, everything from the 20s to the 70s. Overall, things could be a lot worse in December, so we'll take it.

Hi! I just wanted to give a quick on the road trip report! We left MD at 2am this morning and after 7 (quick) stops we arrived in Jacksonville around 2:45 this afternoon. We were doing so well on time we went the extra 20 mins from Kingsland, Ga to Jacksonville just to say we made it to FL before we stopped!!

There was no traffic at all, and really easy drive! I was so surprised! Thank you all for this board it helped make this trip get off to a great start!!

Howdy from Texas!

I've been lurking on this thread for a week now, hoping for some tips for our first trip from Texas. We leave next Friday.

For those of you with smallish children, what are the one or two things that are a must have for a long road trip?

My munchkins are 3 and 7.

We will be headed to the world with our gd who will be 9 for her first Disney treat. I would like to fly and DH wants to do a road trip. We live near Hershey Pa, we have all flown before. Air fare would be around 550 to 600 for the three us and DH insists on having a car which is running around 250 to 300 for the week so I can see his point about driving but I am not a good passenger and he loves to drive.
How long is the drive and what would be a good route and halfway stopping point. Thanks for any info given. We will be travel first part of May

If you drive, are you planning to take 81? I am about one hour south of you off of 81. It took us about 16 hours on the road with one overnight stop when we took 81. We stopped at Orangeburg, SC, after about ten hours on the road. We leave on a Sunday after church. If you can leave earlier in the day, you might want to drive farther than Orangeburg. Once we get to Disney, our car stays put and we use the buses.

It is a family joke that I am not a good passenger and no one can actually believe that I've now willingly made this road trip three times. Dh won't fly and if I want to get to Disney, this is the only way. I've looked into AutoTrain but the price seems to be ridiculously high (we'd want a bedroom and not a coach seat or one of those little rooms).

Our most recent trip was just last month and we tried 95 this time instead of 81. We had smooth sailing all the way even though we hit a good bit of traffic around DC. Dh would like to do 95 the next time but avoid DC. I actually almost enjoyed the road trip this last time.

hi pam, i live in nazareth, east of allentown. it took me 16 1/2 hours and i use 81/66/17/95 which the 15 route is basicly the same thing. we leave at 3am and the only place were you hit traffic is 95 from fredricksberg to richmond pn 95. ( summer time theres alot more traffic) if your doing this in the summer, i use 81/77. times of travel for people vary pending on how many stops, how fast they drive and if you hit traffic. last night there was an aci. on 81 near hershey, we just missed it. we paid anywere from 2.83 to 3.00 for gas. friends of ours met ud there and they flew. left wdw at 2:30pm got home at 2:30am. problem with the plane had to switch planes. i drove there souvies home and we took them food shopping when they got there. so they kinda had the best of both worlds. for us, we love the drive, weathers bad i can modify my trip, i know the person sitting next to me isnt going to try anything and i use 100 gallons of gas.

Greetings from Petersburg, VA, our stopover location on our way home to the Jersey Shore.

We departed Disney Hess at 8:10 a.m. and arrived here 12 hours later. Drizzle for most of the drive. A huge accident (a burned-out tractor trailor) on I-95 south bound just after we got off I-4 resulted in the interstate being closed. Traffic southbound was diverted along a parallel local road but the southbound backup streched for a couple of miles. Northbound sailed along.

Highest gas price so far: $3.05 regular; mostly $2.99.

A rainy drive ahead.

I've looked into AutoTrain but the price seems to be ridiculously high (we'd want a bedroom and not a coach seat or one of those little rooms).

We have done the Auto-train. We did the regular train from Philly in coach down & back. I said Never Again. We have had the sleeper with the bathroom on the Auto-train quite a few times now. We have gone down & back 2 times, but the other times, to save money, we have driven down and taken the Auto-train back. Going down we are running on adrenaline, on the way back we want to get home, but don't feel like driving sometimes. This has worked well for us and cuts the cost some. It also depends on which way you are going on it and what time of year. In spring going south is usually cheaper cause the snow-birds are coming north then, in fall going north is usually cheaper because they are headed south then. Also, booking earlier is usually cheaper, unlike with the airlines. When a plane is getting full they can't add more space, on the train they just add cars to accomodate more people. The planes they want to fly full. On the train, they just use the amount of cars they need for the amount of people that book. We did get a good rate at the last minute 2 days before we wanted to go on, but that was pre 9/11. I don't know if you can get a ticket that close anymore. We have done as close as a week ahead though.

Right now our trip is planned for leaving on May 4th and arriving on May 5th and leaving the world on May 13 to arrive home May 14 hoping we won't have much traffic since its not summer

the way home we leave at 3:30am and drive straight through. the way down, if i can get the entire tuesday off, we leave home at 3am and drive straight through.(im like a kid, i cant sleep the night before anyway). if not, ill start work at 4am and work till 9am and leave nazareth at 9am.from my house to south of the boarder it is 91/2 hours, we stay just south of that in south carolina in a hampton inn. get up the next morning at 3am and drive the remaining 7 hours.
