I am driving down to Disney from Long Island, NY against the judgement others, but hey I feel more comfortable with my own car and all my luck my plane would get snowed in if I did the airplane route. At least in the snow I can drive still! I am going to use roadsideamerica.com to help with stops/rest areas on the way down so that my 6 YO has time to stretch. Does anyone recommend anything? this will be our first long distance trip somewhere with our son. Does anyone do state gifts? Any idea for those? Or does anyone have a must bring for the car list?

why we like to drive is we are in controll. if i want to leave a day early or a day later because of weather i can. we left in the middle of the night one year to miss a sleet and ice storm in the northeast. we drove till we got out of the storms path and got a room. i know whos sitting next to me. i can bring as much shampoo as i want.( :lmao: i have no hair but if i wanted to i could.:lmao:) i can buy anything i want and pack anything. i also dont get stripped search before i get into my car. back in the late 80s dw and i drove in a snow storm and ended up spending the night in the car at a truck stop. it wasnt to bad but we learned our lesson. never again, its not worth killing your self. i told the story before of friends who flew down and we drove and we got home just about the same time. they had flight delays. last but not least, if a have to use the restroom, i hit a rest stop or a gas station. on a plane, they tell you when you can go.:thumbsup2

Furthermore, you can take as many bags as you want when you drive. And there are no extra fees for them. There are no flight cancellations or delays. You can stop at any restaurant, fast food establishment or diner and eat whatever you want when you want. You can view the USA at ground level. And you can be a part of a good group of folks on the For 2,000+ Mile Round-Trip Drivers Only thread!

All the best.:thumbsup2

Hi All!
We're back from our trip last week. We left Friday night and took 81-77-26-95. This was a good route and we saw very little traffic at all. I actually liked the street lighting on this route better than on 95 too. It took us about 18 total driving hours from East Stroudsburg to our condo in Kissimmee. We made a stop at the Florida Welcome Center to eat our cereal for about 20 minutes and then we stopped at Daytona Beach.

The ride home we drove straight up 95 because by the time we hit the Virginia area it was late already and there was really no traffic.

All in all, it was a good trip. I don't think we'd drive straight through again unless we left at different times and had a few extra days off. I'm still a little fatigued from the drive home and arriving at 6 am Sunday.

Great trip though...I'm in withdrawl of course wishing I was in Florida and WDW!

i flipped through your trip report.:thumbsup2 great job!! your going to be driving about 5 miles from me. i was reading about what you found on roadside, very cool.:thumbsup2 the tractor trailer on the bilboard and the paint can we pass all the time.:lmao: i think you are coming east via i78, where i78 merges with rt22, just past dorney park by a few miles, look to your right, you will see a house that is round. its next to the highway you cant miss it. once you past the allentown exits, theres a place called roadside america. some sat. if you have nothing to do and want to take your son there, its a huge train village indoors. i use to go there all the time when i was kid. also, you said your husband was into old haunted jails, theres a jail up in jim thorpe pa. (not to far from you) that has alot of history. the molly mcguires, if you ever seen or herd of them, its about the coal miners. anyway, this jail has a hand print on the wall that has a questionable history. its been on the history channel already. i can tell you how to get there if your husband looks into it and wants to check it out.:thumbsup2

Glad you had a safe drive and good trip! We live near Williamsport and are doing the same 81-77-26-95 route next week. We are stopping in Columbia overnight though. We are thinking of doing the 95 route on the way home because we plan to drive straight through and would be going through the VA/MD cities before 5AM. Did you prefer one route over the other? This is our first trip and first time driving:)

Oh, I was waving as you passed the 80 & 81 junction. :wave2:
and sent pixiedust:
I am set to do this down in Oct. and then an auto train home. Gosh I hope we sleep enough to get back home from VA. in the morning after a night on the train. We have a sleeper, but it will be loud.

The founder of the For 2,000+ Mile Round-Trip Drivers Only thread wrote the book about the Disney Legend, Fess Parker: TV's Frontier Hero.

All the best. :thumbsup2

Oh how nice. I love the story's and remember the Davy Crocket shows. My grandparents lived near the Daniel Boone Homestead and am a real early America History reader. Romances of the period too of course.
Thanks for sharing.

I am getting really excited now. Will be packing the van in about 48hrs. Leaving in less than 72hours and my kids have NO clue.
