Foods from your childhood, long gone

My grandma used to make the best choc chip cookies. She swore she used the Tollhouse recipe, but she always did them from memory. Mine don't taste like hers at all.

We also used to buy these frozen glazed donuts that we would open and pop into the microwave. They were really good. I could still find them at a certain store about 8 years ago, but can't anymore.

I miss the "Reggie" candy bars from the 70's and the "Bounty" Bars. Imagine my surprise when I found Bountys at the British Candy Shop at epcot! They still make them for UK export. Yum! As for missed food growing up, my sister can make a good copy of Grandma's "War" cake, but no one can duplicate my mother's prize winning apple pie. I don't mind not having the "Liver Loaf" anymore though!

Does anyone remember Flaky Pufss or Puff Pies. I think they were made by Hostess in the mid 80's

I forgot all about the frozen donuts. There use to be small frozen cinnamon/spice type of donuts that were so good. I think they were made by Morton's.

I have seen Shasta soda in the Kmart's in Jacksonville.

Mortons made frozen glazed and jelly also, but that was pre-microwave. We put them on a cookie sheet in the oven. I don't recall small spice ones :confused3 .

Does anyone remember Flavor Straws?

My Mom used to buy them to 'flavor' our milk.

Those were a lot of fun (for us kids). We'd take them apart after we finished our milk and suck the flavor out of the inserts.

:rotfl2:

Not really from my childhood - but about 10 years ago Coke tested a new flavour called "Kona Coke". It was coke with a coffee flavour and it was SO GOOD! Sadly I may have been the only person to think so because I don't believe it was ever widely released.

When I saw the title of this thread I immediately thought of Fizzies! I'm not surprised others thought of them too! What a treat they were! Watching was almost as fun as drinking! For those of you deprived of this childhood treat think AlkaSeltzer that tasted like wonderful fruit soda! Sure wish they were still made... I'd love to share them with my DS!

The Vermont Country Store actually has a lot of these "forgotten" candies in their catalog. I'm sure they have a website too. Try google.

I remember fizzies, and flavor straws, and the 7 way bar that had 7 sections.

There were quite a few of the things on that list that I didn't know were gone. Pudding cakes! Snackin' cakes, big batch cookie mixes, Brach's thin mints! , clorets, chocolate cool whip? I never got to try it and it's gone!, peanut butter combos! you're kidding!,

My grandma made good pies- used lard. My mother made delicious chicken cacciatore.

Carnation coffee instant breakfast. I loved those. Then they altered it, and it was never the same.

This isn't that long ago, but I miss those "Big Stuff" Oreos. They were the giant-size ones. I used to take them as snacks to girl scouts. :teeth:

Speaking of home recipes- My mother passed away 2 1/2 years ago and just this summer I was compelled to make the Green Tomato Relish she made from my grandmother's recipe (from Germany). It consists of shredded green tomatoes (a gallon; have you ever tried to judge what a gallon of green tomatoes is?),cabbage, bell peppers, onions and some hot peppers. It tastes like a sweet sauerkraut that is delicious on hot dogs, etc. I look at the jars and think of her and the times we made it together. Bittersweet but lovely memories!

Aww man!!!!!!!!! They took away my Dunkaroos!!!! I loved those things! Anything but my Dunkaroos!!

I'm kind of glad most of the stuff on that list is gone though-Grape Tang is not my thing, catch my drift?

We still have Shasta out here in the west. My favorite thing though was Fizzies. Does anyone else remember these? You added I believe 2 tablets to a glass of water and you had a soda.

I'd forgotten about those!

I miss Jello Puddin Pops!

I just bought some individually wrapped frozen donuts that you can heat in the oven or microwave. They're called "Donut Time", they're pretty good! They come in a box of 12 I believe.

YES!! I knew there was something I couldn't think of. I LOVED those!! Bill Cosby and all.

I remember being at a friend's house when I was about 18. I found them in the freezer and said "Pudding Pops!!? Your mom must really love you" :rotfl: :rotfl2:

I miss Green River Soda, Shasta Red Apple soda, Mallo Cups and Ice Cubes( really good squares of chocolate).

Here are a few of mine:

Mr. Salty Pretzels
Tootsie Pop Drops (tootsie pops w/o the stick(think a little larger than a starlight mint))
Orginal Jello Pudding Pops (the new popsicle ones are not the same!!)
Tato Skins (do they still make these I haven't seen them in awhile)
McDonalds Riblet Sandwich
