Foods from your childhood, long gone

The one food from my childhood that I really miss was called "Food Sticks" or "Food Stix" I can't really remember. They were about as thick as a tootsie roll, and marketed in the breakfast aisle. They were in flavors of chocolate, peanut butter and butterscotch. I used to love those!!!!

As in Space Food Sticks?? They created them for the astronauts? Or that's how they advertised. I do remember those. Yum.

I REMEMBER FIZZIES!!!!!!!!
How about Shake-a Pudding?

YES! Shake-a-pudding - I can still remember the jingle that went with it! :rotfl:

I miss Green River Soda, Shasta Red Apple soda, Mallo Cups and Ice Cubes( really good squares of chocolate).
We can still get Ice Cubes at a little special candy store here in town. LOVE those.
Anyone remember the drink Fresca? I never cared for it, but haven't seen that for Ages. I saw a billboard advertising it the other day, not sure if its being re-introduced, new formula or what.

I forgot all about the frozen donuts. There use to be small frozen cinnamon/spice type of donuts that were so good. I think they were made by Morton's.

Oh wow I LOVED those! Wish they still made them.

Yes. I remember those. My first love with chocolate and peanut butter.

Can't cook a homemade pastie (meat pie) as good as mom.

Wife swears by cherry dipped cones at Dairy Queen, and a lot around here don't do that (only chocolate dip).

Although still probably found on the grocery shelves haven't had spam, vienna sausages, braunsweiger and deviled ham since I was a kid.

Thank heaven someone else remembers them. My siblings and I were afraid they were just a figment of our imagination. We've never found anyone else who remembered them! Thanks for helping me realize my childhood memories ARE real ones! :rotfl:

I also used to love Bonkers fruit chews!

Me too!

Oh yes, Morton's frozen donuts and honeybuns! I loved those as a child, my husband and I were talking about these not long ago.

I regret not having my mom show me how to make oyster stew. I haven't attempted to make it yet (she passed away last December) but I'm sure it won't be as good as hers. No matter how many times I try, my mac-n-cheese just isn't as good as hers. My granny made so many good things but she passed away before I really became interested in cooking but I still have her cookbook at home and use some of her recipes. She made this chocolate fudge cake from scratch that was out of this world. My last attempt at that was miserable! My fudge icing turned into rock icing :rotfl:

Every once in a while I'll buy marshmallow cream so DH and DD can eat fluffernutters. :goodvibes I, personally, don't care for them, but they love them.

Someone else mentioned deviled ham -- my son loves that stuff, but I only buy it rarely because it costs over $3 for one of those little cans. :earseek:

I remember the space food sticks too!!! I miss jello 1-2-3 also. And MARATHON bars????? Oh my gosh!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVED those things. I was told they are still sold in Canada but I don't know for sure.

Shasta can still be found here as well all though I never really liked them that much.

Snackin cake came back a couple of years ago and I just bought a bag of it at Big Lots yesterday but it doees not taste the same. I remember the original you had to add a tablespoon of vinegar to the mix but now you don't.

If you are looking for those old recipes, Consider the Maine Rebekahs Cook Book.
I have a 1977 copy. . I don't know if they still print them. tel: 207-784-7991

I used to make DD 'homemade' Dunkaroos because it would cost about the same but last much longer....Teddy Grahams and cake frosting (the kind in the container). If you get a craving, give it a try!
They still sell them..I just bought my daughter Shrek dunkaroos--maybe they aren't dunkaroos but they are the same thing--a container with a comprtment for cookies and one filled with icing.

I miss Fudgetown cookies!! Chocolate sandwich cookies with fudge in the middle.

I also would love to have my MIL's pot roast gravy recipe(it was very tangy I think she used vinegar in it :confused3 )
My MIL also made chicken legs in a very thin tomato sauce with peas, served over egg noodles. It was fantastic!! All the recipes I see for that are for regular chicken cacciatore, which is thicker and chunkier.

Finally..my Mom used to make a chicken casserole that I loooooved. I think it was with mushroom soup..but it wasn't the regular Campells mushroom soup chicken bake deal..it was more savory, more saucy.

Marseeya - I've sent you a PM with my grandma's lemon meringue recipe. She was the best cook I've ever met - owned a small diner in the Depression that had people raving about her food. This pie has a very old-fashioned taste, despite the easy shortcut ingredient she used. Hope it reminds you of your grandma's recipe. (By the way, I tried to email this to you twice, but I don't think that worked.) Enjoy! ::MinnieMo

At least around here, you can still get Green River in most grocery stores.

I loved Egg Noodles and Cheese - they came in a box with the powdered cheese stuff. Kinda like mac & cheese but they tasted a little better.
I LOVED that stuff!!! :lovestruc

I still buy these :)

We also used to buy these frozen glazed donuts that we would open and pop into the microwave. They were really good. I could still find them at a certain store about 8 years ago, but can't anymore.
Kroger has these :)

I got two e-mails from you this morning! I also e-mailed you back with a thank you, didn't you get it?

Anyway, I'm going to try it next time I get ambitious enough to bake. Do you think pre-made pie shells are any good? I've never made a pie before!
