I am not sure which forum is best for this question, but here goes!

I am planning my first half marathon for October. We booked a trip to WDW for 9/24-9/30, and then I realized that the F&W half marathon is 10/1.

WWYD? Extend the WDW vacation to run the F&W, or run the one I planned on running at home, two weeks later? The F&W is at night, which would be hard, and the eating/training thing will be all off the week before the race, which is daunting. On the other hand, I would love to have my first half be tied in with a magical trip, kwim?

I am going to move this to our WISH board where they discuss these races. :)

Do you have plans on completing the coast to coast challenge this year? If not and you just want to run the F&W half just because you'll be on vacation at WDW then I say go for it. I think if your not a total foodie you'll be fine especially since you'll be at WDW and probably walking all over the parks which you can consider part of your training as long as you train before you leave on vacation to WDW. Good luck with your decision.

I did F&W as my first half and ***loved*** it - such a fun course, and being in Disney was super motivational for me. That said, if you go "park commando" and would be worn out by the end of your currently scheduled trip, you may be better off waiting.

I lost my thread! LOL. Thanks for putting it in the right place though :)

No plans for the coast to cost, I don't even know that is to be honest. I just want to go on vaca, have fun, and run a half a marathon. The idea of having all three of those happen at once is appealing. But simultaneously, it seems overwhelming.

It is nice to hear it was a good run. I have a friend who ran it last year and said it was horrible and she will never run another night race. She is a real morning person though.

I run in the evenings all the time, so for me it was a non issue. That is something to think about for you, though.

I'm a morning person also and usually run better in the mornings, however I am so excited about running in the evening with my friends at WDW.

Your story is very similar to mine. I have been running for over a year now and have always wanted to try a half marathon. I was already going on vacation with my family from 09/29-10/03 and just happen to notice that the marathon was happening while we were there. I took it as a sign that it was meant to be. I work night shift so running at night will fit right into my schedule.

My first half was the Wine & Dine last year. I loved it, it is my favorite medal. I am really glad I chose it as my first half because it really motivated me to do the training.

I never ran wine and dine - but my biggest concern would be is that it is a tendency to be very hot at the time of year still in fla (even with the night start) - so if you struggle with heat/humidity, you might want to choose another race for your first

but other than that...i would say go for it! all disney races are an amazing place for your first big race...lots of folks at all different paces, great course support/entertainment, and obviously great medals

First any Disney race is a great race - especially a first time event.

I am a little concerned about being on vacation for a week then running the race. As laid out, you will need some level of discipline to keep to a manageable diet and to keep the legs fresh during the later part of the week. The diet thing is easy as Disney has started offering a better selection of better choices - but you have to choose them. The staying off the legs is next to impossible. For the most part, your training is over the week pre-race so a couple quick jogs and you have that out of the way.

One main benefit of being there early are acclimation to the local conditions. You will have a week to get used to the current weather and humidity.

DH and I are running this one as our first half! That being said, we are starting our trip on 9/30 and taking it easy that first day so our legs are fresh for the race on 10/1. Our Disney vacation starts the day after the race.

After our 4 day trip a week ago I know I wouldn't be able to walk a 5k much less run a half with how sore my legs were just from walking around the parks for 4 days :lmao: If you can take it easy while touring the parks in the days leading up to the race then you might be ok. But if you were me, I'd look for another half to run as my first.
