Food prices are up

The grocery store butcher was joking that even she was thinking of eating roadkill, hey its free i what she said:rotfl2:

I ended up buying a pork roast today. It was the cheapest per pound except for chickn legs, hich we have eaten way too many this summer since its cheap.

I have flank steak for tomorrow(got for $6.45 a pound a splurge but family favorite that is normally $8)

And im thinking pizza for Tuesday.

Wednesday...... Not sure. Dont want to grocery shop until thursday, so it will be interesting.

Supper tonight was a big zucchini from my garden cut lengthwise and stuffed with ground beef and sauce topped with a sprinkle of cheddar cheese baked in the oven. I have enough meat & sauce mix left over to cook a little pasta to make my DH some goulash for one lunch this week.

That was my one package of gr. beef I bought, but I'm getting 2 meals out of it, so not a bad deal.

I've noticed there are more and more things I am just walking by these days that used to go in the grocery cart. I can't justify the price increases and am learning to do without things we always bought "just because".
So true! This week I picked stuff up, shook my head and put it back a LOT!

I can feed mine cheaper at home. School lunch was $3 last year. Not sure if it will increase this year. That wasn't enough food for him. He usually spent $4 a day. That is $20 a week or $80 a month. Just for lunch.

Yeah it is crazy but my oldest boy who starts the 11th grade will not take his lunch to school...I may be able to get my youngest who starts 6th grade this year to take his..:confused3

This weeks hits and misses for me at supermarket.

HITS

Perdue Oven stuffer roasters 1.59/lb
Cheeries are 1.89/lb
85% lean ground beef $2.59 lbs
93% lean ground turkey $2.59 lb
seedless grapes 0.99% lb

I'll pick up these things.

Misses
Boneless rib eye steak. $6.99 lb. I'll wait a few weeks and see if it goes down to 4.99 or 5.99.

Boneless chicken breast $2.99 lb. again I usually wait for it to drop to $1.99 before I stock up.

Time to get brutal. LOL. tell him the price of the linchpin comes out of his allowance.

I make a deal with my kids... $20 cash every 2 weeks (because thats my payday... but basically $10/week or $2/day)

***Yes, I get that $2/day is not the full price of hot lunch, but in return I am grocery shopping for more "lunch-friendly" food at the grocery store****

They are welcome to pack a lunch from my kitchen (for free and pocket the money) or spend it on school lunch if they prefer.

They suddenly like to pack lunch :rotfl2: The $20 tides them over if they're feeling lazy a few days or *really* craving cafeteria pizza (gross) But usually they choose to pocket the cash and spend it elsewhere.

You might try the same trick. However you would spend on cafeteria food, give them the cash and let them make up their own minds.

My Dad did this for me when I was in HS - it kind of worked. I still bought food at school some days but would happily pocket the difference. The downside of it is that sometimes all I had was a candy bar from the school store since it was cheap... :rotfl2: I always found our hot food to be gross but there were other things.. a small cob salad for instance was $1.75 vs. a slice of pizza for $2.50.

Off topic' but I just noticed a gallon of paint is no longer a gallon of paint.

True... my dad in HS did the same thing for me, thats where I got the idea. But he was a bachelor, so sometimes the groceries at home weren't that great either.

BUT the difference with my kids, is I still make an effort to have good lunch food in the house that they can take for free.

There is a donut/kolache shop walking distance from my kids' Jr/Sr high schools. I have a feeling they make a few bucks off my kids lunch money. Pack a free lunch from home and grab a kolache on the way to school!

My dd has brought a lunch from home every day of high school. It probably helps that most of her friends do too and that I pack it. Very occasionally I'll give her money for lunch or she will spend her own, but she actually prefers to bring salads and snacks and healthier items from home.
Ds in still in grade school. They do a pizza or sub day once a week. He doesn't like subs, so I usually buy him pizza twice a month. I do get tired of packing lunches but I do appreciate that they get a way healthier lunch that way. It's not cheap though. I find we spend less in the summer.

Well that stinks! Paint is not cheap to begin with. It seems like the sizes of everything are shrinking. I told DH that I went to Trader Joe's for the first time in 10 years and EVERYTHING looked smaller to me. I don't think I was imagining it. The vitamin bottles were half the size of the ones I remember, the rack of lamb that we used to buy every week now looks appetizer-sized, etc. I was so excited to get a Trader Joes in FL, and now I won't be bothering to go back.

I noticed that beef prices took a jump last week. I actually put the package down and didn't buy it because I couldn't get my head around the total price.

Food prices in general scare me lately.

Yes, we used to have rib eye once a week. I have switched to lamb chops. They are much cheaper AND they are grass fed.

I'll have to check next time we're at the store. We stopped buying lamb 25 years ago because it was so expensive.

As you are handed a half gallon container you will be told to say repeatedly so you will believe "this is a gallon"

Customer: "What? Do you think I'm stupid?

Retailer: " We certainly hope so."

Wow I haven't seen $4.99 in 5 or 6 years, ribeyes are running $9.99lb here now

They were 5.99, 4th of July and Memorial Day. Then 1.00 extra office if you had a club card. I'm hoping Labor Day they'll tun the sale again. If they do I'll stock up.

It is really interesting to see the variation across the country in food prices. I guess this must tie into the cost of living factor for the area you live in.

I depends on what quality level you are getting also. Grocery store here is normally 5.99 to 7.99 but if I go to a specialty store they are $35 for dry aged.

We are trying to buy better quality items. Like super lean ground beef is $7 pp. We just don't eat as much (we are overweight and need to eat less anyway).

Our steak prices are insane, $10 pp. Our shrimp is $12 pp! Chicken went up to $1.50 bone in and $2.50 boneless. The last time we bought chicken (case of 120 pounds) it was $1.87 pp boneless.

We started buying produce at a farm about 30 min away. I got 50 pounds of tomatoes for $12. 25 pound boxes of cucumbers for pickles were $7. Huge bell peppers were 25 cents. I ended up with 175 pounds of tomatoes that we canned and froze for future meals. 75 pounds of cucumbers make a LOT of pickles :) It is my hope that we can continue with the bulk buying a couple of times during the season to bring down our overall yearly cost while improving what we eat. A real tomato, red pepper sauce with no added sugar tastes fantastic and is worth the extra effort :)

I saw this thing on pinterest that I'm going to try to see if it helps the grocery budget. Its 25 meals for $150 shopping at Aldi.
