Today we were going to get our first taste of the F&W festival. I was really looking forward to this, I love trying new foods and drinks, but we had a full day planned here later in the week so this was just a sampler.
First we attended a New Zealand wine seminar. This was really informative and you got reasonable helpings of wine. We decided we'd definitely be doing more of these before the end of the trip.
Next we headed to World Showcase to grab a couple of samples. We had a lunch reservation at the Garden Grill so I didn't want to eat too much.
First we went to the French booth. I got the escargot. I'd never tried these before and I absolutely loved them. They were encased in a little bread basket, with lots of garlic and parsley butter.
DH got the Goats Cheese and tomato tart. He liked this and described it as a nice quiche. I'm afraid I forgot to take photos of these.
Next we headed to Japan so I could get some sushi. I went with the California roll and this was a pretty standard California roll, good but nothing special. It came with the standard wasabi and ginger, and a cute little packet of soy sauce.
Next we went to the India booth as there were a couple of vegetarian options for DH to choose from here. He went with the vegetable samosa, which he really liked but the sauce it came with was too spicy for me.
We stopped by Morocco so I could get a chicken bastilla. I've had these in restaurants back home, and I was a bit disappointed by this. Normally you get a really unusual contrast of tastes with the savoury meat, and the sweet topping. But this didn't really have enough sweetness to it, with no powdered sugar on the top, just cinnamon so it just tasted like a chicken pasty with a hint of cinnamon.
Overall I enjoyed my first trip to the festival, and was looking forward to my next visit in a few days time.
We had a late lunch reservation at the Garden Grill. This looked a good character meal for us, as people had reported getting lots of interaction with characters, not just them stopping for a quick picture like we had previously experienced at Donalds. Breakfast.
We checked in 10 minutes early and were buzzed before our ADR time. It was quite quiet for a character meal, with a fair few unoccupied tables. Service was ok, we waited a while for him to come and take our drink order, but he seemed to have a fair few tables to take care of. We asked if DH could have a vegetarian option and he said no problem.
We then received drinks and bread. You got biscuits and cornbread, and we both absolutely loved the cornbread.
Next our meals arrived. I had the standard fare, of turkey with cranberry sauce (v good), catfish(v good), steak with mushroom sauce(not good at all, steak tough and chewy), cheesy potatoes(really good) and vegetables (ok).
DH got a butternut squash risotto, which he said was nice but nothing special.
I totally forgot to take pictures of this meal and by the time I remembered this was all that was left.
Both DH and I were offered another plate if we wanted but we both refused.
For dessert we were given apple crumble with bourbon cream. I thought this was nice and DH absolutely loved it. The apples were soft with a hint of cinnamon, the crumble was good and you could definitely taste the whiskey.
I thought the character interaction was really good here. They all came round at least once to say hello, and they spent a lot of time with the young children at the table next to us, Chip danced with a little boy for 5 minutes (it was so cute).
Here's Pluto deciding what to order from our menu:
Overall this was a fun meal with reasonable food. Nothing gourmet but good for a character meal, and definitely one we'd return to.
Rating 3.5/5
We were pretty full from this meal until a lot later tonight so we headed down to POFQ to grab a quick meal. We went for the usual Vegetarian Burger and a Chocolate brownie. The burger was fine, and the fries were hot and crispy. The brownie was really good as it was still warm from the oven, very soft and rich.
Next up will be Raglan Road.
