Food and Wine? Sounds Divine! An October TR - 12/2 A PTR Link!

I'm FINALLY going to be going to Las Vegas at the end of March for my 30th birthday! :cool1: It's actually going to be DH's first time too, so we're very excited to be going..however, there is so much to research. Tons of restaurants, tons of shows and lots of hotel options.

For those who have been (or those who live there, happenin2you ;)), please give me tips and/or suggestions of what to do and most importantly, where to eat please. popcorn::

Congrats! What a way to celebrate a significant birthday.

We've stayed at Treasure Island, Caesers, Excalibur and one other that was so long ago I can't even remember!

One of the things to consider is if you want to experience a Cirque show or not. If you do, it might be worth looking at Bellagio, Treasure Island or one of the other hotels in that chain. I think they offer tickets earlier to their guests before general public. Depending on when you go, mid-week accommodation is usually cheaper?

Paris is fun; but I liked The Venetian better. Only because I could do a gondola ride through their Grand Canal at a more affordable price than in real Venice. ;)

Have fun with the planning.

Yes! I completely forgot about this. This is something I wanted to do as well. Thanks for bringing it up!:cool1:

I have never been to Vegas so I am absolutely no help whatsoever. But Yay Yay Yay :cool1::cool1::cool1: for an adults only trip to Vegas! What a great way to celebrate your birthday!

I typed a long response about our Vegas adventures and lost half of it when I tried to post! I hope you have a great trip!

Yay Vegas!!! I stayed at the Wynn years ago which was gorgeous and our room was HUGE! I especially loved the bathroom. More recently I stayed at the Mirage which I also loved. The room was nice but it wasn't as nice as the Wynn but we got a free upgrade to a room with a view of the strip which I'd highly recommend in any hotel. I thought the Mirage was in a better location on the strip though.

You can do the fun stuff at each hotel even if you're not staying there, like see the Eiffel Tower at Paris, the fountain-show at Bellagio, gondola ride Venetian, etc. If you want thrills, the Stratosphere has some crazy rides on their roof. You can even jump off of it!

I saw the Beatles Cirque show at the Mirage and thought it was good, but I think there are better ones. O at the Bellagio is supposed to be amazing.

You're going to have such a great trip. Vegas is so much fun!

ETA: There's an Earl of Sandwich in a mall on the strip! :P

That's where i've always wanted to stay because of the fountains.

You don't have to stay there to see the fountains, you can always walk by there. Keep in mind the strip is a couple miles long and it's a long walk from Excalibur to Circus Circus. But Valet Parking is really expensive and parking anywhere is tough. You'll spend a lot of time going to and fro parking lots. I don't even know much about that "city center". That's all new to me even though we ate at the P.U.B. there, it's kind of a blur in my mind. I know we had a hard time parking.

I was hoping you would chime in :) especially regarding the dining. I really wanted to try at least one of the Triple D restaurants that you had mentioned a while back on one of your TR's.

I am guessing you guys are driving and that you are taking 58 over through Tehachipi? If so you will hit both the restaurants we went to on our Vegas road trip because they are on the way and not in Vegas. One was Peggy Sue's Diner outside Barstow. That was the place with malts and all the Elvis stuff. The other was the Mad Greek in Baker. Both were really good food. I think we hit one on the way there and one on the way back.

Definitely going to do one nice dinner.

There's a million places for that!

When I checked out lasvegas .com, there were so many Cirque shows, I have no idea which one's good! And then there's magic shows, like Criss Angel would be fun. I'm a little overwhelmed.

I've seen two Cirque shows, O and one of the others. I just don't really get it. I mean the acrobats are cool and all, but it's just not my thing so much. They're a little weird, but if you're into that acrobatic art kind of thing I suppose it's cool.

Would like to see the Bellagio fountains. Is that something that we actually have to plan to see, or can we just walk up at night and watch it?

As I said above, you can just walk by and see them. We have eaten at the Bellagio steakhouse and Picaso, at one of those places after dinner, they moved us out to the patio after our dinner for coffee or dessert drinks and we sat out there and watched the fountains. That was pretty magical. But you can also just walk by on the strip, stop and watch and move on.

What do you think of the Paris hotel? I thought it may be fun to stay there, since it's the closest thing to the real Paris i'll be able to get to!

I haven't been to Paris hotel. That was built right around the time when Fran's arthritis was really bad or her parents got crazy sick, so we haven't seen it. We usually avoid the strip unless there is something compelling us to go there like a restaurant or an exhibition. I usually like to drive down it during the day to see what's new, but we're mostly fuddy duddys. Other than my one night of killer dining, we usually just sit at a black jack table at a cheap low minimum table and get free drinks and play the table. Of course that is unless we find an entertainer we want to see that is in town. Like when Debbie Reynolds was playing. There is another hotel we liked waaaaaay off strip, but it had lots of restaurants, low limits on the tables and some good headliners. I can't remember the name off the top of my head, but it's way south on the 15 in a place that wasn't even hardly populated 10-20 years ago. Now it had a HUGE casino. it will come to me eventually.

Thank you for your recommendations. I have a Word Document that i'm copying all this stuff down so DH can look at it too.

I'll keep making suggestions as I remember them. BTW Downtown is fun too. The Fremont Street experience has a light show on the hour at night, and they have all kinds of whacky stuff going on down there. Table minimums are lower there and not as crazy as the strip as well. But you guys might not even want to do much gambling. That's a big reason why we go to Vegas, but the dining and extravagance is another part of it!

I think you're referring to the M Resort.

Alicia,

I know a ton about this crazy city and can share anything with you! Let me know when you plan to come and what kinds of things you're interested in. There are tons of every kind of restaurant in every price range and any type of food or setting. Most of the casinos are elaborately themed and could take you two whole days to walk the entire strip and see everything. As far as Cirque shows, I've seen O and LOVE. I couldn't stand O, but most people love it. It was just too random for me. I love LOVE. It's all to the music of the Beatles, which I didn't realize how much I knew until I saw the show. I've seen it four times now. Criss Angel is the laughing stock of Las Vegas. His show gets terrible reviews and they are constantly offering tickets for cheap because no one wants them. My SIL, who is 10 years younger, had the hugest girl crush on him and saw the show several years ago, she even got selected to go on stage for an act and received a kiss from him, and then told everyone that the show wasn't very good. This wouldn't be very meaningful, except she thinks her crushes can do no wrong, so it was a big deal when she didn't love Criss Angel's show. I've also seen Rock of Ages, good, Blue Man, fun and random, Jersey Boys, great, Terry Fator, good. Paris has really nice rooms and the Jubilee tower at Bally's was recently renovated and the rooms are pretty modern and spacious. Planet Hollywood is nice, but could use an update. Treasure Island was refurbed around 2010 and was nice. Venetian and Palazzo are gorgeous and can be expensive, but all the rooms are suites. Caesar's Palace is amazing, but can also be expensive and is massive. It can be very annoying trying to get to your room from the casino. Those places are all on the strip, which is where I assume you'll be staying. I think I mentioned to you once before about the Double Down, which is a dive bar near the strip that has house-made bacon vodka that they use to make bacon martinis and bacon bloody marys. Let me know what kind of recommendations you're looking for and I'll be glad to help! And maybe we can grab a drink while you're here.

I think you're referring to the M Resort.

I looked it up, it is the South Pointe Casino. We ended up there because they have a Steak and Shake. Midwesterners may not be impressed but there arent any of those in CA so it was a treat for us to go there.

I agree with you on O, I wasn't impressed. Very random. Perhaps if I were to see LOVE I might change my mind. I like the Beatles.

What a great way to celebrate your Birthday!

You've already received some great feedback. I've been to Vegas more times than I can recall but my current favorite hotel is The Hotel (connected to Mandalay Bay) although I love Bellagio it can be pricy. (If you can get a fountain view room that is fabulous!) Hotels that I've stayed that I probably wouldn't say you should try your first time are Rio, MGM, Excalibur, and anything downtown.

The petite suites at Treasure Island are a nice option if you want to go more moderate for the price and a central location. The petite suites have a his/hers bathroom with a big spa tub in "her" bathroom.

Ahhh so many choices for dining. I was just at Fleur in Mandalay Bay recently and loved it. I also love Emeril's Table 10 at the Venetian. I don't think you can go wrong with so many great options all within a few square blocks.

Oh, and I saw a note about Earl of Sandwich. I've been to the one in the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood but it looks like they now have one at the Palms.

Not sure if you are interested in any nightclubs but Hyde at Bellagio has a wonderful location right there by the fountains and you have a front row seat for the show. The club itself is very nice.

Enjoy your planning! :)

I've been to Vegas a total of once. And it was for a bachelor party... so probably not the type of trip you're looking for. :rotfl2:

We stayed at the Flamingo because we were able to get cheap rooms. The rooms are nice, and it is clean, but it is nothing extra special (although the TV in the bathroom mirror was kind of cool), but the location was great. It is kind of toward the middle of the strip so that you can easily get around to other casinos. This was the highlight for me. I don't gamble (with the exception of some wagers at the sports book), so I loved just walking around and checking out the architecture and theming of all those places. I highly recommend taking some time to do this. I think the Venetian was probably my favorite.

The biggest bonus about our room at the Flamingo was that, not only was it cheap, but we had a room located where we could look right out our window and see this:

11892403054_04e865c754.jpg

Yes, I realize it is a crappy, cell phone through the window at night picture, but it really was an incredible view. You definitely don't have to stay at the Bellagio to get a room with a good view of the fountains. If you wanted to stay at Paris, you might be able to request a room that could give you a fountain view. :confused3

As far as food goes, the best meal I had in Vegas was at a Brazilian Steakhouse called Pompas, I believe in the Planet Hollywood Casino. It was pricey, but we definitely got our money's worth out of it. I mean, when a group of 12 guys in their 20's walks into a restaurant that says they'll keep bringing meat to our table until we can't take it, nobody ever wants to be the first one to say no. :lmao::rotfl2::rotfl: As miserable as I was when we left there, I will still say the food was fantastic, and it would definitely make a nice date night type place.

I think I saw someone mention Fremont Street. Definitely worth checking out if you have a chance to get there. As an added bonus, the pawn shop from Pawn Stars is just a few blocks away from there if you want to stop by on your way. :rolleyes1

And last but not least... Don't take the trading cards from the people on the sidewalks. :scared1: :scared1:

Your updates are great! Sorry about the rain, but all the food looks VERY yummy. :thumbsup2

As for Vegas - we have stayed at the Excalibur, the MGM and the New York, New York. I would go back to NYNY, Excalibur was nice but nothing special and I didn't care for the MGM. Side note .... they are ALL at the same street corner. :rotfl2:

We pushed our California trip back to 2016 and will stop in Vegas then too and I have my eye on the Bellagio. :goodvibes

I am so excited to come across your trip report for a couple reasons! First off, while my family and I have stayed at AKV in 1 bedrooms we have never stayed in the 1bd value. We will be staying in the 1bed value this Summer though. It's hard to find pics. I loved you posted quite a few. Thanks for that!

I also have a girls' trip planned for the first weekend of Oct this year during Food and Wine Festival. I can't wait to hear what you think of the food and what are your favorites.

I forgot that we'll probably have to stop halfway and eat at some point. Thanks for those restaurants! Already dreading the drive...

I'll mention Fremont Street to DH and we'll see what he says. We don't have any concrete plans so perhaps we can get over there and experience it!

Alicia,

Thank you so much! Okay, crossing Criss Angel off the list :teacher: I'll take a look at those other shows that you mentioned. I'll also forget about O and possibly look at LOVE. Is there a cheap place to buy tickets or is it all pretty much through the website? Yes you did mention the bacon vodka!! The bacon bloody mary got me antsy for one now:yay: Let's definitely meet up! We're going Friday, March 28 through Monday, March 31st (actual bday)

What a great way to celebrate your Birthday!

Thanks Brenda for all your input! I'm definitely going to suggest to DH that we check out a nightclub. He HATES dancing - unless he's had a drink or two obviously. I absolutely love dancing and there's no where around here to do that so hopefully he'll go for it!

Hi and Welcome! You're going to LOVE F&W! Especially as a girls trip. That would be so much fun! More booths will be coming up shortly!

Congrats on the birthday trip, that's so exciting!!!!!

I've never been to Vegas before so sadly have nothing to add. I have however seen about 10 different Cirque shows and have loved them all, I don't think you can go wrong with Cirque du Soleil. Every show is different and all have amazing music and acrobatics. But I love that kind of stuff so I'm a bit biased.

Wow you've seen a lot of Cirque shows! We had tickets for DTD in 2010, but had to cancel them unfortunately, so I haven't seen any. I'm really into that acrobatic, weird stuff!

Thanks to everyone who replied! So much information...but I think I have enough time (I say that now right ) to plan this. Going to post an update for the TR after dinner. Thanks again!

***I left us off stuck inside one of the China shops eating 'MY' noodles, waiting for the rain to subside***

The rain stopped after a bit, and we all went and sat outside the Reflections of China theater so I could feed DS. While we were, this woman and her daughter had been sitting next to us for quite a while and had gotten up and left. After a few minutes had gone by, DH looked over and noticed that one of them had left their purse  DH grabbed the purse and went off in search of her. He did eventually find a woman looking around frantically for something and went up to her and asked if she was looking for her purse. She was so happy and relieved, he said. DH said she looked absolutely terrified and could cry when he approached her, poor thing. Good deed done for the day, we went off in search of more food…and drinks!

No rain clouds in sight

I’m bummed, I can’t find my Singapore booth or menu picture. But at least I got a picture of the food, which is all that matters!

Seared Mahi Mahi with Jasmine Rice & Singa sauce with a Singapore Sling. Now, before leaving for our trip, I had read up on a few of the drink items that were offered at F&W, and this drink was on the top for being strong. By Disney standards, usually their mixed drinks really aren’t terribly strong. Great Googlie Mooglie! :scared1: This was ridiculously strong! In fact, DH and I towards the middle of the drink, each had to force this drink down our throats :drinking1 I would cheer him on, he would cheer me on :cheer2: Because of great teamwork, we finished the drink. Phew!

While we were working on shooting our drink down, DM went ahead to the Mexico booth

Oooh what does she have in her hands? A Taco de Rib-Eye with Salsa de Chipotle and a Dos Equis

The taco was really delicious, and of course, so was the Dos Equis, which I helped DM with. I prefer the Amber to the Lager but this fine on a warm day.

A picture was needed!

Since DM had went ahead to the Mexico booth while I was at the Singapore booth, I didn’t get a stamp for this one, but we’d stop again later. We had one last FP+ to use and that was to Meet the Disney Pals. We were within our time frame, so on our way we went, very happily, I might add. Definitely not under the influence of any substance ;)

On our way to Future World, we passed The Cranberry Bog

We stopped and talked to this guy for a couple of minutes. He doesn’t look happy in the picture, but I assure you he was a chipper man!

I told DM that she couldn’t bring her beer inside the building and to hurry up and down it. Good job DM!

Once we entered the doors to the Character Spot, there was NO ONE inside. I wasn't even sure we were in the right building. I asked a CM that was walking through if this was the place to meet Mickey and she showed me the empty queue, and we walked right on in. There was no one in front of us! Just the characters and Photopass Photographers! No explanations needed, so enjoy the pictures!

Look who snuck in to our shot! No not DM, Goofy! :goofy: We didn’t even know it until we got home and looked at the pictures. So cool!

DM’s favorite character

Always reaching for the nose

:lmao: you can see my arms are getting tired by the end…DS is slowly getting closer to the floor :rotfl:

Such an AMAZING experience! The characters were very involved, the photographers took tons of shots and DS was in such a good mood. Loved every second of it!

After we left the Character Spot, we went and sat down on the benches inside to figure out what we were doing next. DS was still so excited from his meets, that he decided to share some saliva with poppa! You can’t really see it, but there was a string of saliva from DS’s mouth to DH’s nose.

DH was clearly thrilled :rotfl2:

:woohoo: Yeah for the strong drink!
And the food looks pretty good too.

The pics with the characters are just so cute! I love how Calvin reaches for the noses. So funny.
Love the last three photos! :rotfl2: I am sure your DH was just thrilled. :lmao:

And since you asked .... we plan on going to California for 4 - 6 weeks in August and early September of 2016.

So nice that your DH was able to do a good deed and return the purse! I'm glad she didn't think he stole it or something when she saw him with it. :rotfl:

That is one heck of an amazing character meet!!! Wow, no rush and no distractions and a happy baby! Love all the pictures! So, so cute! He was really smiling a ton and having a great time with all of them. So fun!

At least he shared his saliva with DH and not with the characters, I guess...:confused3

What a good deed you two did. I would have been FRANTIC if I missed my purse.

Amazing M&G pictures and how cool to have Goofy photobomb your Mickey picture.

Adorable photos! Goofy photobomb FTW :thumbsup2

Yay for a STRONG drink. Got that Singapore Sling on my list ;)

DM has great taste, I love Dos Equis :drinking1 We get those at the Mexican place in Pacific Wharf/DCA every trip :)
