We are going to have fondue on New Year's Day. The recipes that I have found all seem like they would appeal more to grown up tastes (expensive cheeses, beer, etc). Does anyone have any ideas for fondue that kids would like?

My kids like cooking steak, chicken, and fish (shrimp and salmon) in oil in the fondue pot. They also like basic chocolate fondue.

Why not just regular cheddar cheese? You know "yellow" cheese?
They can dip bread, mini hot dogs etc. You can also make a chocolate fondue.:cutie:

How about chocolate chips???

They can dip bananas, strawberries if you can get them-- just about any sort of fruit, along with pound cake or plain cookies.

CHEDDAR CHEESE FONDUE

1/4 c. butter
1/4 c. flour
2 c. milk
1/2 tsp. salt
Dash pepper
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/4 c. sliced green onion
2 1/2 c. Wisconsin sharp Cheddar cheese

Shred the cheese and set aside. With the butter, flour, milk, salt and pepper, make your white sauce. Now add the green onion and cheese, stirring until the cheese is melted. Serve in a fondue pot, with a low flame under it, or another vessel so as to keep the fondue hot. With fondue forks, dip chunks of crusty bread in it.

You could even serve it with fun "kid" things for dipping...cut up hot dogs, the carrots that are cut up like chips, celery sticks, pretzels, etc.

Good luck!

My kids love the cheese and chocolate fondues... in the oil we do steak, shrimp and chicken.... It's my DH that doesn't like the fondues LOL....

Growing up we often did steak fondue. We are doing a fondue tonight, not sure what though. I have a chocolate fondue ready for tomorrow with strawberries, apples, bananas and pound cake.

mmmm fondue. Alas, I sold my fondue pot in a yard sale.

I've been inspired...we're doing cheddar cheese fondue tonight. Melting pot recipe. Yum!:goodvibes

Beat me 2 it:thumbsup2 I love this!

My girls also love the cheese, and chocolate recipes. They actually don't mind the "fancy" cheese recipes. Melting pot is one of the favorite places to eat at our house!

We like steak fondu, give them some simple dipping sauces like BBQ, taco sauce, salsa and maybe a salad dressing of some sort. Some french bread and a small salad if they will eat it should be plenty.

Here are the 2 kid friendly fondue recipies I'm using tonight:

Cheese
INGREDIENTS
2 cups milk
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons ground dry mustard
1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
6 cups shredded Cheddar cheese

DIRECTIONS
In a medium saucepan over low heat, mix together milk, Worcestershire sauce, ground dry mustard, garlic and flour. Heat until almost boiling. Gradually stir in Cheddar cheese. Continue heating until all the cheese has melted. Keep the mixture warm and melted in a fondue dish.

Dippers: cauliflower, french bread, carrots, celery, apples

Chocolate
INGREDIENTS (Nutrition)
1 (16 ounce) can chocolate-flavored syrup
1 (14 ounce) can EAGLE BRAND® Sweetened Condensed Milk
Dash salt
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Dippers: fresh fruit, cookies, pound cake cubes, angel food cake cubes

DIRECTIONS
In heavy saucepan, over medium heat, combine syrup, sweetened condensed milk and salt. Cook and stir 12 to 15 minutes or until slightly thickened.
Remove from heat; stir in vanilla. Serve warm with dippers. Store leftovers covered in refrigerator.
FOOTNOTES
Microwave Directions: In 1-quart glass measure, combine syrup, sweetened condensed milk and salt. Cook on HIGH (100% power) 3 1/2 to 4 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Stir in vanilla.
Tip: Can be served warm or cold over ice cream. Can be made several weeks ahead. Store tightly covered in refrigerator.

Yummy! keep the recipes coming!

For those that fry meat in the fondue pot, do you then dip the meat into any sauces or just eat it plain?

We do a beer batter. Sometimes we have sauces on the side. Cocktail sauce for shrimp mostly. Bbq for chicken.
