Flying with kids

These may be stupid questions but, since I've never traveled with kids before I have to ask

- Do you have to show ID for the kids when you check in at airport (school id, etc.?)

- If you are traveling with someone else's kids (ex. nieces) do you need a letter from the parent(s)?

- Is it a problem if the kids have different last names?

Any other info I may need about traveling with kids ages (10-16) would be greatly appreciated.

Photo IDs are only required for adults.

You don't need letters from the parents... A letter wouldn't have legal force anyway.

Today children from within the same family often don't have the same last name, don't sweat it.

When we travel without our DD or vice versa, we sign and notarize a letter authorizing her Grandparents to consent to emergency medical treatment and make a copy of her medical ID card.

Also, make sure you have multiple contact #'s for the children's parents.

As stated only adults need to show picture id, although if the 16yr old has a drivers license it may not be a bad idea for him/her to have it along.

If you are leaving the country (taking the kids to Mexico or Canada for example), I believe you do need some legal form of a permission slip. How the airline knows the children are not yours - I have no idea. This is not a requirement within the U.S.
