Flying with a child--first time

I know this is probably a silly question, but do I need any kind of documentation (outside of boarding pass) for my five year old to fly? Obviously, he does not have a photo id. We don't fly very often, and my son has not flown before, so we really aren't sure. I went on Southwest's site, but it only talked about verifying age for special priced flights (which ours was not).

Since he's 5 you probably bought a ticket for him so he wouldn't need any other documentation. The only time documentation is needed is if your flying with a lap child to show verification that the child is indeed the age to be a lap child.

We flew with our daughter for the 1st time last Sept (1 at the time) but bought her, her own ticket. They didn't ask for anything going through checkpoint.

Nope. Children flying regular fare don't need any ID.

Note that children under 18 don't need id only for domestic flights.
