Flying Business/First Class - do you tell people?

Shame this forum doesn't seem to have polls so people can vote...

But I was just wondering, if you fly business/first class, do you tell people?

I don't. Would tell my parents if they asked, but I don't volunteer the information. Never told anyone at work.

About 4 years ago I went to Australia to compete in a big sporting event, I flew with the rest of the team but hardly anyone knew that I was in business class (since the rest of the team was split up around economy, it was easy not to be missed...). I even missed going to the lounge in Heathrow (to spend more time with my team mates) and queued up with the rest of the team in the economy boarding line to get on the plane... Was a LITTLE embarrassing at Bangkok (on the way back from Australia) when I was reboarding the plane: one of the gate agents recognised me in the economy queue, came and grabbed me out of the queue (where I was standing with the rest of the team) and pulled me to the empty Club World priority boarding queue

Ok, so am I the only one who is daft about not wanting people know... What do you do?

If it comes up I tell people - I don't boast about it but why should it be a secret? I have shouted it from the rooftops when upgraded for free! :teeth:

Snap :thumbsup2

i think with the team situation it was probably the best idea, but if its your own holiday and your party are all sat together to enjoy it....why not tell the world :) some people only get to do those kinds of things maybe once or twice

I tend not to mention however as Gill has said if its a freebie I tell all my friends!

I remember back in September 2004 the lady in front of us was broadcasting to her children that they were special people as they were sitting up stairs! :

I find it rarely comes up - at least in a way that I can't avoid telling the truth... I know, I am wierd!

I will sometimes tell people - after the fact - when I have been upgraded for free (has happened about four times over the past 5 or 6 years - once with Virgin to Upper Class, once with BA to Club Class, and twice with UA from Business Class to First Class - must be lucky I guess!). But then that is a total matter of luck - I don't tend to feel guilty about luck...

Lucky I don't post my location, then men in white coats would be scouring the city for me now... ;)

Why should you 'feel guilty' about telling people. If you earn your own money and you choose to spend that by flying Upper/Business class, why shouldn't you? I can't see that I would ever be in the position as I'm pretty sure we will never be able to afford to go Upper Class but, I am damn sure that if I could, I would be so excited I wouldn't be able to stop myself from telling people.

Having said that, I think there is a fine line between telling people out of excitement and boasting/rubbing it in and, the trouble is on forums and the like, it's sometimes hard to tell which is which :confused3 I still don't think I'd be able to keep it to myself though ;)

I guess that is what I am worried about....

People sometimes judge you for what you have, not who you are (and rarely in a positive way....). Would rather people know me and not what I have.

A few years ago we were staying in Naples (on the Gulf Coast of Florida). We went to eat at the Benihana (or other form of Teppanyaki) there. We were seated at a table with another couple of British families (who were travelling together). Think that the management thought they were being clever, but they did put us with the families from hell... :sad2:

The men spent the entire meal talking loudly about their money, cars, yachts that they had just bought and the kids were whining and running riot. They were not politte, at all, to the waitress (who ended up making a loud comment about "how lovely it was to have nice, politte customers like my husband and myself"... ). To top it off, at the end of the meal, the men were discussing how to split the bill to avoid having to pay the compulsory 15% service charge (tip) charged to parties of 6 or more... Bearing in mind that 15% tip is the recommended minimum tip in the US anyway... :sad2: Obviously so much money, but so little class...

Husband and I left a big tip (in excess of 20%), very polittely thanked the staff at the restaurant and left. But that was definitely "dinner WITH a show" that I would like to avoid again...

Sort of related...

Unfortunately, I fall into the category of not being able to keep any news good or bad to myself. I just have to share it with someone. I never mean to boast but it does sound like it comes out like that. For our hols next year which will be to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary, we are really pushing the boat out. I hope you won't think I bragging but sharing good news with you. I've watched what I've said at work though. Another colleague will be going in May, and I get the impression she's not done her homework! She asked me where we will be staying and her face fell when I told her. Don't know if that was ignorance or jealousy. I think you have to judge how pleased others will be for you or if they are the jealous sort. My sister is just fed up with hearing about this holiday and we've got another 15 months to go yet, I've learned to shut up, except with you lot of course.

I don't think that talking about thhings on forum like this is "bragging" as such - unless people are excessive about it, of course.

This sort of forum is for sharing information and can help us all get the most out of our trips to WDW/Orlando - for some people that can include upgrading their flights for less than they thought possible. Many people think that everyone flying Business Class is paying about £3500+ per person, just for the flights, round trip. Whereas, if I travel Business Class (BA's Club World), it is normally at a cost of £650/£850 (plus 25k BA Miles) per person. Maybe that is another reason that I don't like to mention flying business class - people often think that we are a lot richer than we are!

There are often great deals out there worth sharing...

Where are you going to stay for your 25th Anniversary Lizzy Lemon? Definitely worth pushing the boat out for :)

If somebody asks us about our holiday plans we will mention where we are going and staying but would never state the class we are flying in unless specifically asked. In my opinion, it depends how well you know the people you are talking with - most of our friends/family know us well enough to know exactly how we choose to travel - I don't think it needs to be stated.

I agree that many people have pre-conceived ideas about premium class travelling, and this forum is excellent to dispel these myths and offer information and advice for those who are considering to spend their money on upgraded travel.

We are staying at the Yacht Club (standard room I'm afraid, would love to upgrade but a postmans and hospital domestics wages don't stretch that far) the night before we leave we are staying at the SAS Radisson after hearing about it here on the Dis about being able to see the planes and being able to walk to check in. Plan on doing all the shows we can Cirque, Hoop de Doo, Fantasmic and of course as its October MNSSHP. So in a way I can blame the Dis for informing me of all that is available and expect you all to contribute to the collection I'm starting for us :rolleyes1

here i shall put the contents of my pocket into your collection....thats one kit kat wrapper, a button, a 2p piece and a bottletop ;)

What a GREAT choice. We stayed at the Yacht Club a few years ago (2003, I think) for about 5 nights I think. It is REALLY gorgeous, totally beautiful, has THE best pool, is in the prettiest and most convenient location - I am afraid that you really will be spoilt and will have the time of your lives! :)

There are a couple of quiet pools too and one has a laundry room right next to it. Sounds odd, I know, but I hate coming back with a case full of dirty clothes: laundry isn't much of a chore when the laundry room is right next to a pool!

If I stayed on-site again, the Yacht/Beach Club would be at the top of the list: it really is in the heart of Disney. :thumbsup2

You will have the most unbelievable trip... sounds like you deserve it too.

Can't see anything wrong in telling anyone about how you are flying, but I suppose its easy to rub folk up the wrong way for example if you were to tell them you were going to fly first class, then follow it up by saying there was no way you would fly any other class....the keyword here I suppose is "class", which obviously translates the original statement to mean "look what I can afford, theres no way I'd fly with the rest of you poor folk, now get out of my way" etc etc.

I have told people I am flying uc, I guess I see it as an achievment as it has taken some saving up for and alot of economy flights, I see it as part of my holiday so when I talk about my trip I talk about it too

My holiday starts at the airport lol

I have not told anyone, not even my sister who is coming with us that we are flying home UCS, as she will think that we have paid thousands of pounds just for her flight ticket when it is costing about £300 more than what we would pay to go PE.

I would mention it to close family like my mum if it came up, though if some one asked me right out I would think it a bit odd as why would it interest them.

If you have earned it then why not fly UC etc. Personally we cant afford such things but then again some people cant afford to go on holiday at all...

I like the i wont bother you if you wont bother me attitude and am a quiet person. I dont boast anything to anyone about what i have and as a follow on from that i dont like people rubbing their betterness in my face. This also applies to minority groups ramming their opinions at me aswell.

But on the boards it is not personal so no worries for me. Tell away.
