Flying back on the date of 9/11...Any thoughts

I know this may sound totally off the wall but its my worried state of mind and how far I let it go...........So my question is should i let the fear of that date make me change my date or just dont worry about it,,, I flew down there last year and flying does not bother me its just i thought about me return date and made me wonder.....

We've flown on 9/11 many times. I just don't worry about it and enjoy the trip. Do whatever makes you more comfortable though.

I've flown on 9/11, and it concerned me at first, but then I figured that security is probably more alert on that date due to it's significance. If it's going to cause you extra stress, though, then you may feel better changing the date. Who would complain about an extra day on vacation?

I have flown on 9/11 a few times and while I always do "reflect" it is just business as usuall with respect to the logistics of flying.

Only flown on 9/11 once back in 2005 and I honestly was really nervous....but I have a fear of flying anyway. I will say that there was NO ONE at MCO that day. That was only 4 years after though, so I can't say what its like now.

When we looked at dates this year, the first scenario had us flying back on 9/11. When I pointed out to my wife she winced and we looked at another timeframe. Being the 10 year anniversary gave us pause. We also thought about how the 9/11 terrorists trained in Florida, and that our flight would cross over or near DC. The likelihood of something happening is incredibly small. If it is a cause of concern for you and your family, maybe you can consider extending your trip by a day so you don't have to fly that day.

Right after 9/11, we were flying down to WDW. Yes, we were nervous. I mean, it was less than 2 months after. We flew home on 11/9....I couldn't help thinking that something bad would happen on that day since it was just a reversal of numbers...obviously I was overthinking things.
I wouldn't worry about flying on 9/11 at all.

DD and I take our Disney trip around this time every year. Each year I have adjusted our arrival date forward or back by a day to avoid flying on 9/11. I don't do because of any fear of terrorism, I agree with everyone here that it is, if anything, likely safer than other dates due to increased security. Why do I avoid it then? Because if I were to book flights for 9/11 I would have to deal with terrified calls from my mother probably every day until the flight and then every hour on the day of until we safely touched down.

No it doesn't. Neither does anything else that people say "means they won".

Allowing yourself to say "hey, this is scary to me, I'm going to honor my feelings" isn't winnign or losing, it's just honoring yourself.

OP, we're flying in the 12th. We could fly on the 11th and have an extra day for ant-jet-lag purposes, but we won't. It doesn't feel right. So we'll be at home, packing, instead.

We flew to Baltimore (would have been DC but Southwest didn't go there then) on 9/18/01...but we're not going to fly on 9/11, at least not yet.

Couldn't agree more, It's no different to fly on Sept 11 as it is any other day of the year. Always remember those who had their lives changed on that day in 2001 but don't let it change our lives forever.

Weren't the plans to hijack a train on the 10th anniversary instead of a plane? From the stuff on Bin Ladens computers the seized? Either way, they chose that date for a reason one time and there is evidence of a 'plan' for a 10th anniversary attack. It likely will NOT happen as security will be stepped up but hey, they done it once and I personally wouldn't risk it again.

I would absolutely opt for the 10th or 12th. I don't think there is anything wrong with feeling leary of this date. And if it means they won, so be it. I'll still have my family by my side.

They already won because they made 9/11 happen. Our government let them win that one by not protecting us better.

If you do fly that day, I would suggest allowing even more time at the airport. It seems to me since it is the 10th anniversary, there would probably be more security and checks involved.

Show ID in order to have a government employee permit you to travel within the US (or even within your state), take your shoes off, carry no liquids larger than 100ml in a qt. baggie, go through a scanner that looks under your clothes, be one of 20 million US air passengers annually subjected to a hands on body search with no probable cause that you committed a crime.

If it is going to cause you discomfort and fear, I would change the flight date. It is not necessary to have that reaction but it is valid and you should accommodate your own personal needs rather than anyone else's views on how you ought to react.

You are under no obligation to tough it out or "prove" anything to anyone. Do what feels right.

how is flying 9/11 different than flying 9/10, 9/12 or any other date?? Yes 9/11 2001 was a horrible day; I don't deny that one bit however that was a day in 2001.

My family has flown on September 11 several times (for many years the tickets were cheaper as they tried to fill planes on the date that gave people pause). Of course you can't help but think about the tragedy of 2001, but I never felt unsafe flying on that day as opposed to any other day.
