:confused3 Not sure if this is worth it...looks like a hot item for the holidays, but just hit the store so no user reviews on it. Any one have any opinion/thoughts? Too young for an 11 year old? Cost of paper refill is high, programs are about $30...seems like the thrill may wear off.

I am looking for gift ideas and i saw this in an ad...but I did not know what it was or what it does.....

I admitedly am technically burnt out..... I don't want to keep up with the new stuff...until; I see it will be around for a while..I am sick of how much$$$ keeping up with technology costs....
I wanted a record ..i went and bought it and played it..no monthly fees....no extra charges.... no downloading....ahh the good old days...hahahaha :rotfl:

I am not crazy over a Technical Christmas either...and something like this just screams "ripped off " at school...or banned so no cheating etc. My DS can use all the help he can get w/fine motor skills and improving his writing etc., so I thought it may seem "cooler" or less academic for him to fool with htis, but at a buck a page for paper....ugghhhhh. The charger is $30, or a bundle pack for $125, I don't know....the computer is supossed ot save time, but all it does is suck all our time up! However, he may tend to utilize this more as he is not a "sit at a desk" kid, and this is definitely portable.

:rotfl: very true!!!

I know and I can't pass on my technical negativity to the kids...their world practically revolves around it?

What does the Fly do anyway?

and my DS 11 wants something non technical...a drum set..hahaha now thats scary!!

Amazon has reviews of it. I've never used it. It looks cool but when I found out it needs special paper that was a downer. I"m not sure many people would remember to carry the special paper with them. Seems like it will cost more in the end to have it than the 99 bucks at the beginning. just my thoughs.

We've BEGGED our DS to take drum lessons! Even tried sweetening the deal by offering a set up front! He is anbidextrious (sp?) and has pretty good rythym so thought he's enjoy it, plus to me, I think it takes a great edal of skill/discipline to master the drums....I know discipline and drums don't sound right together but, better than sitting at the PC!
The FLY is a computer pen that allows the user to access paper much like a computer screen. You download programs, there is a chip for the pen and using special paper that is covered with tiny sensor dots, the paper will read what you are drawing on it and then the pen has a "voice" that speaks. As all electronics, the basics of the pen allow games, calculator, a few other things, but then the programs are what add up and the refill paper, the charger base.....for instance, there is a language software to purchase seperately. You write a word in English and it will tell you the word in Spanish.Original, no, any translation dictionary can do that, but handy dandy convenient, yep! However, the pen only holds a charge for so long, who knows what the durability is, paper is expensive...it has its pros and cons, and I am not sure if it is based a little too young to get the most bang for your buck over time. It is cool to be so portable, but again, losing it or getting it ripped off...possibilities...someone scribbling all over the paper thinking it's no big deal. There are smaller notepad size paper packs available...I don't know. I sure wish he'd go for the drum set. :cool1:

Thanks form the desciption Pam....the Fly sounds interesting....especially the translation program...but sunds like right now it is just the newest thing to brag about...haha

I am not too unhappy about the drum set....he really is due for one...the lone snare and school band lessons are only going so far...hahaha
I just don't know where we will put it?? Can drums withstand cold ....right now the attached garage is probably the ony place for it...

Not too sure about the cold issue, but I dated a drummer once and he had them in a back room addition, but it was heated. That is a good question. If we had a set they would go in the basement..the "unfinished" basement, the really loud , echo off the walls basement.... :teeth: and actually DD is pretty interestd in learning...could be a combo gift....... :goodvibes
