I have a niece who is almost 5 years old and still primarily wears size 18-24 months clothing(in some things she can wear a 2 or 3T). We joke that she will be the only kid going to prom in a 3-point harness child seat. Now, my sister is 5'2" and my DNs father is 5'8" and comes form a very short family, but even the pediatrician comments on how teeny she is. They have ruled out any disorders, so we know there isn't a medical problem, she is just small and probably will not be a tall woman.

On the other hand, my 10 yo DD is already 5'1" and wears a size 1-2 juniors. I am 5'9" and my DH is 6'5", so it isn't shocking or anything, but she is much taller than her older sister was at her age (who is now 5'8" at age 17). Time will tell, but part of me really doesn't want her to be super tall and I sort of hope she doesn't pass 6' (I know, it really doesn't matter, but just hoping)

Anyone else have any children who are unusual size for their ages?

I was an unusual sized child so I worried about my son's height. I was only 3 feet tall at the age of 10!! My son, on the other hand was FIVE feet tall at 10!! YAY!!

Everyone thought I was going to be a "midget"... being a girl it was okay. I was like Webster, everyone thought it was "cute", but I was worried for my boy.

My sister had the exact opposite problem that I had and similar to your daughter. She was 5 feet 2 by the time she was 11. BUT she STOPPED at that height and is still 5 feet 2!!

Everyone assumed she would be 6 feet by the time it was all over, too, but her shoe size told another story. She wore a size 5 and still wears that size. Her shoe size PROVED she was not going to be a giant!

My son, on the other hand, wears a man's size 11! :earseek:

I grew to my full height of 5'10" by about 13. Which would have been o.k. if I weren't about 98 lbs. Olive Oil is not fun at 13. :( Since I'm quite a few pounds heavier than 98, this is no longer a problem for me. :p

My DH is tall too - 6'1", but neither of our boys is particularly tall, yet. They have always been between the 50 - 75 percentile on those charts at the doctors office - not short, either, though. Both are built a lot sturdier than I was at that age -- they take after their father in that way thank goodness. I'd hate for either of my kids to have to go through the Olive Oil stage - its bad enough for a GIRL to have to experience that, but for a boy it would be awful.

Well, you really didnt help me there, LOL... my 10 yo DD wears a womens 8 now, so who knows what will happen...

My 14 yo old son wears a size 13 mens at this point...so I think he will probably be at least 6 feet tall(at 14 and 5'11', it is pretty likely), with him, I would just like his feet to stop growing...constantly buying new shoes....he's like a puppy, big feet, huge knees, hands and shoulders....

That is my son right now! He is very thin and all BIG bones...(although at 5'11" and 160 lbs, not nearly as thin as you were, but for a teen boy, he is self conscious about it) But, he keeps trying to bulk up...eats like a horse( and I mean a Clydesdale), but I keep telling him it is unlikely he will gain any real weight until he stops growing so quickly...

Yup, P&W, that is pretty much the truth. I can remember my mother making me these fattening milkshakes -- she'd put a raw egg in there, blech! But I'd drink it in hopes of gaining weight, which I never did.

(sure wish I had that problem at 40-something! :p )

Oh, and I should also mention that I wear a size 7 1/2 shoe. Judging by that, one would think I would not be as tall.

So there goes the shoe size theory, at least for me.

It does sound like a bad thing to say but I agree about not wanting my daughters to be too tall. I am 5'10 and I think that is as tall as I would want my girls to be since I personally hated being tall growing up. My husband is 6'2 so there is probably a good chance that they will exceed my height. My eight year old has always been the tallest in her class...boys or girls. The good news is that I love being tall now.

Wow, that is unusual! I wear a size 9 1/2 or 10...I HATE having big feet.

I hear you, I hated being taller than most girls, even at 5'9". I always thought it would be nice to shop inthe petite section...

I really don't mind it now, because I can get away with gaining 5-10 lbs in the winter, but not going up 2 sizes in clothing, LOL. I think there are advantages, but I really would have preferred being shorter when I was a teen. I was thin, but with friends who are so much smaller, I still felt like an Amazon woman. It was better when all of the boys caught up.

When I was 11 I went to Girl Scout camp for 2 weeks. They would weigh and measure us when we arrived and then do it again when we left.

I was already very tall for my age at 5' 10". Imagine my surprise when I measured out at 6' at the end of the camp session!

I continued to grow another 2 inches before reaching my maximum height of 6' 2". Now being older I've shrunk a bit. Gee, I figure if I can live to be 100 I might get below 6 feet again. :p

Everyone in my family is tall from my grandmother (father's side) who was close to 6 feet tall around the turn of the century, to my daughter, 5' 10" and son, 6' 5".

Nice to see that I'm not so alone with a tall dd. She is also 10 and broke the 5' mark last month!!! Only weighs about 84 lbs. A real beanpole. I did tell her when we were out shopping for an Easter dress that she would be in junior clothing soon. Guess 'soon' is here. I wasn't sure what size she had to be. Wears a woman's 7 in shoes. My dh is 6'4" and I'm 5'8", so it looks like she'll remain tall. A question for you all with tall dd's......how do you manage to buy clothing that fits but isn't too provocative at the same time? I hate buying older girls clothes since she's only 10.

Good question and one of my pet peeves. It is really hard to find clothing that fits, is appropriate for her age, but stylish. The biggest problem we have is with jeans/pants, IMO. She can still get away with large girl sizes for tops, but she needs the 'juniors' length/fit for pants. I used to get away with buying her clothes off the rack without her trying them on, now she has to try everything on so that I can tell how it will fit and if it looks 'too old' on her, if that makes any sense.

I hit my full heght, 5'8", by 8th grade. My father is an average height man(about 5'10") and my othe ris quite short(5'2"). My father tells me I resemble his mother both in looks and build. She passed away when I was a baby.

It's too early to tell if he'll be tall forever, but Jacob is 15 months and has been wearing a 4T for several months now, probably since he was around 10 months old. I can sometimes get away with a 2T for pants, but for things that cover his torso, it has to be a 4T. DH is 6'2", so I don't expect him to be tiny, but I never expected him to be this big, either. It's even hard to dress a big child at this age. I like things with snaps for easy diaper changes and onesies so that his shirts aren't always in his armpits, but his clothes are made for 4 year olds, who are potty trained. I sew a lot of his stuff.

I was just about my adult height, 6' 6", by freshman HS. I and 2 other guys were always the tallest. I was taller than my 6' 2" dad in my 8th grade graduation picture. It was bit tough then, that tall. NBA was not the sport it is today, making height more commonly seen and desired, not nearly as many tall kids as there are today, not many places to buy 'in' clothes' as there are today, along also with catalogs and the Net.

I was challenged fairly often (okay, challenged is PC for fighting, LOL) by smaller kids who took it as a badge of honor if they could pick a fight with me and win. Oftentimes they did 'win', as I did not particularly like fighting, (though would) and often more than one of them. My shoe size is a 14, most of my life I wore 13 (maybe I am looking for more comfort in my advanced years, LOL), either size actually is on the smaller size, for my height.

As for the kids, we are an adoptive family, and even though Natalie's 5' 1" or so is inline with Marie's 5' 1/2" and Vince's 6' or so is inline with me, we had nothing to do with that part of it, LOL. My dad was 6' 2", mom 5' 7", both tall for an early 1900's couple.

apparently there is some "calculation" my brothers pediatrician did for him and my mom when he was born. He said my brother would be over 6' tall.

My mom LAUGHED...she's 5'10, my dad is 5'8.

My brother is now 6'4 and wears a size 15 shoe. (he's 24) he was a "husky" boy growing up...but around sophomore year of high school - he shot up and thinned out.

I'm right in the middle, 5'9"...blessed with my mom's big feet - 9 1/2. (thanks mom! no shoes look cute in that size!) I sprouted early...I was my full height by I think 7th grade. - so around 12 years old.

and for those looking for "bigger clothes" for their tall DD - why not try Old Navy? I don't think *any* of their clothes have that "provacative" look about them.

My 7yo dd is very short and almost stopped growing around 5yos. She was never in a % on the charts.

She started on growth hormone shots 1 year ago and has grown 4" and has gained over 10lbs. She is currently in the 2% for ht and 8% for wt. YEA!!!!!

MM,
That's like my neice, it really doesn't seem like she is growing at all right now. The wierd thing is that she looks appropriate for her height(she isn't rail thin or anything). But people stare at her when she opens her mouth, like she is a child prodigy (because she is pretty articulate for a 4 1/2yo and sized like a 1-2 year old). I think she weighs about 25-27 lbs now.

DD was like that as well. From 5-6 she stopped growing, her growth line went straight across instead of curving. In Feb of her K year (2003) we began the daily shots. It is not fun. But she agrees to do it because she was still the height of a 3yo in K.

This year she of course is the smallest but not "preschooler" small. She fits in.

It was a hard decision to make to do the shots.

I'll bet it was. Just a few questions, how do they decide if hormone shots are needed? Is it just because they aren't growing or is there some sort of bloodwork that shows they are deficient or what? Also, does it usually work, or is it a trial basis type of thing? And, what, if any, side effects are there? (I obviously know very little about this, LOL)
