Fluff...Unusual sized children (regarding height)...

Awwww I hate to hear someone say they don't want their daughter to grow up to be my height! :( I'm 6' tall and have been this height since I was 14.

I wouldn't really mind being tall if it weren't for the thousands of "do you play basketball," "do you model," "you're really tall" comments I get everywhere I go.

We have trouble with my dgrdd. She is 10 and for size around she would wear a size 6 but for her height she needs a size 10. Unless pants have elastic or a drawstring they don't fit. Her 5 yr. old ds wears the same size underpants as her. I am making her some clothes because at least then they fit.

I feel sorry for kids who are brought up to feel awkward about their height, rather short or tall! (Or their weight, shape, abilities or lack thereof, etc.). Glory in their individuality!:sunny:

I wasn't brought up that way. It happened because of other people... both kids and adults. I won't go into the terrible things people said to me when I was a teenager. You probably wouldn't believe it anyway. What I will tell you is that it wasn't until I started working at 18 that people finally accepted me for who I was.

Thanks goodness for my grandmother! She went through the same episodes only for her it happened in the 1910's.

To this day I still get a few wise mouthed people who have something nasty to say. Now I just tell them to shut up! The only way to deal with a moron is to stop them cold.

BTW, I'm really glad your girls are not tormented the way I was. From reading the posts in this thread, I can see I'm not the only one who had a tough time with their height when they were a kid.

Isn't that odd that people do say those things? I've always been flabergasted by that -- I can't imagine going up to someone and saying "you're really fat" to someone, why do they feel the need to comment that I'm really tall???? I think people might say that aS a compliment, but as a tall woman I've always been annoyed by it. Although I long ago learned to accept the fact that my height would be a source of fascination for people, and I'm only 5'10". I can imagine what taller women go through. As an adult, I really don't mind it as much, but as a young teenager, I found it very uncomfortable to constantly be reminded of how tall I was by strangers who felt the need to make the basketball/modeling/hows the weather up there comments.

Oh yeah, I can't believe how many people actually think nothing of commenting to a complete stranger about their appearance. Just today, a sub where I work said "Boy you're tall." Like, what am I supposed to do-- apologize? Act shocked like this is all big news to me?

I would never dream of going up to someone and saying "wow, you're really large," or "Awww you're so cute and SHORT"

I think a lot of tall girls develop self-esteem issues because everywhere they go they're reminded by complete strangers how different (ie freakish) they are.

I didn't truly get over the self-consciousness til I was in my mid-20s, and that was only a few years ago!

Oh I'm perfectly fine with my height now. But in 5th and 6th grade I was miserable. Everybody called me Too Tall Jones.

I remember especially hating Class Pictures --- Back Row Center. Photographic proof of my utter geekiness.

Exactly, Val. I don't think its really easy for us as tall women to articulate that to anyone else -- when I've told people who aren't tall the way I felt as a kid, they just say, "oh, but you are so lucky that you are tall!" I don't think people can grasp the concept that no teenage girl (and boys, in some cases) want to be pointed out as different or freak-ish. At that age, you want nothing more than to blend in with the crowd.

As far as the guy who said, "boy you're tall", you really should have said "and were you expecting an apology?" LOL! That is a great comeback! :p

Gah!!!! Been there, done that, way too many years of photographic evidence.

I wish I were that brave!!!! :teeth:

DD is 2 1/2. She is 3 feet and weighs about 27 lbs. I have the hardest time buying pants for her. 2T is too short, but huge in the waist. She needs 3T length and 24 month waist size. I had to buy her 18-24 month shorts and capris from Old Navy.

I was done growing by 5th grade 5'3 1/2", 110lbs. Puberty kicked in ther summer between 4th and 5th grade (EVERYTHING happened then) and I was done! LOL! I am still the same except I added 5 lbs. since I had DD. :)

My 13 year old daughter seems to have stopped growing at 4'10" and 90 pounds. She has been at that height for all of eighth grade. She has been teased a lot about her height, kids calling her shorty, etc. I don't think it's a mean kind of teasing, but she really hates being so much shorter than her friends. She is not looking forward to high school in the fall, unless she gets a growth spurt over the summer!

My daughter is 18, and she is 4'11" and weighs 92 lbs (fully dressed). She absolutely hates being this tiny. I told her *one day you will not mind being that little*.........she doesn't believe me! She's constantly telling me *all my friends are so much taller than me*. At her last doctors appt. when they took her blood pressure (I think it was 80/50), the nurse said *my.......you are a little pip-squeek*!!

Now my son on the other hand is about average for a 12 year old....he is about 5'2" and 120 lbs.

I used to get that all the time. Now it is, why are you so short? Because I am. Because God made me that way. After all these years it doesn't bother me anymore but it sure did when I was younger.

On the other hand, my 10 yo DD is already 5'1" and wears a size 1-2 juniors. I am 5'9" and my DH is 6'5", so it isn't shocking or anything, but she is much taller than her older sister was at her age (who is now 5'8" at age 17). Time will tell, but part of me really doesn't want her to be super tall and I sort of hope she doesn't pass 6' (I know, it really doesn't matter, but just hoping)

Anyone else have any children who are unusual size for their ages?

Out of curiosity, how big are your daughter's feet? Mine were already size 10 by that age... they finished growing when I was age 11, at a size 11. I then reached my full adult height of 5'9" at 14.

The only thing I hate is he looks older then he is & people EXPECT him to act older. I have to remind people he is only 4 years old & can't be expected to act like a 6 or 7 year old.

My nephew has the same problem. :( He's tall and has never had much baby fat, so as a 3 year old (he just turned 4 last weekend), older kids would try to play with him on the playground and didn't understand that he wasn't up to their speed. Additionally, my nephew is a little delayed in his speech, so it makes it even tougher.

I have the same problem with my daughter, she is 4 1/2 and 29 pounds but she is 37 inces tall so she needs 4T-5 pants for the length and 2T-3t for the waist! She fits in size 2T-3T shorts! All her pants end up looking like floods because if I bought the size for length they would fall down on her!

Wears a ladies shoe size of 7.5 and girls plus size 14.5 or XL/16 in the regular girls (110 lbs ) but will be soon moving over to the Juniors/Misses ( if they would only make more decent style clothing its all soo low cut !! ) However she is about 4'10" .. why is this Odd .. I am only 5 feet myself size 5.5/6 shoe - i grew this tall in about 6th grade and that was it !! my parents are both 5'7" and my "little"sister is 5'8" !! so I am the shrimp !!! My ex is about 6'1 or 2" ( with his family ranging in height from about 5'9" to some nephews at 6'5" ) so hoping my DD grows up some but no too much as it is I am sure to be looking up to her very soon..
now my DS is 7 and wears a 7 slim and size 1.5 shoes - I think that is pretty normal he is about 4'5" tall .. I will continue to be the shortest person in my household I think.. Michelle

Well, I wouldn't really say I was an unusual size(13 y.o. 5'4 9 shoe)but my older brothers best friend since kindergarden is i would say 6'7ish(I don't know this for sure, but compared to people whom I know their heights, like 6'1ish...that height seems about right)and is 18. When he was little, he was an average boy, much the same size as my brother(only 5'10). His mother is probably 5'5 and his father no more than 5'9. His two sisters are very small...and then he is huge!! Everyone comments on his size compared to the rest of his family. Especially my mom, who knew him before, is now amazed at how large he grew over the years.

I have hated being so short. It can be a real pain. I really get mad when I see people watching me as if to believe that I am actually an adult, especially when I have my 2 dgrdd's. It is just so rude. Short jokes abound and sometimes with certain people it is okay but with others they are not joking they are really being mean. Buying clothes is really difficult especially when you are not a size 2 as well.

My daughter just turned 16 and measures at exactly 6'2". She measured at 6' one month after her 12th birthday. She is very athletic and slender, and I think she enjoys her height, but she has a very hard time shopping for pants, shoes and shorts. My son is almost 19 and is still a little taller than she is.
