flu shot -- yes or no?

While I have never had the flu, I decided to get the flu shot for the 1st time back in 2011 because it was offered for free at work. I also got the shot last Oct and this February my DH came down with the flu and ended up missing a few days of work because of it. Guess who didn't get the flu??? Me!! I told him he should have gotten the shot. He's still not going to get the shot this year but I'm getting mine in a couple weeks.

Didn't get flu shot for 40 years until I had open heart surgery. Worked too hard to stay alive to take a chance.

This will be the 8th year I've gotten one. We get them at work for free.

I haven't had the flu in about 15 years, so not sure if it helps or not.

HR says our rate of sick leave usage at our location has dropped 20 percent since they started giving us the shots.

It only took one bout with the real, diagnosed flu to make me a believer. Our whole family got it with the exception of my DH who was vaccinated at work. We both just got our shots today as a matter of fact.

Getting mine tomorrow at my doctors. My insurance pays 100% if I get the shot from my doctor. They only pay 60% if I get it at a pharmacy.

I got the flu last December for the first time ever in my 56 years. It knocked me on my can for four weeks, the first two of which were absolute misery, and the second two were not much better. It was not a fun Christmas. I'll be getting a flu shot from now on.

Yes got mine at the Drs, I was there for an unrelated issue.

Both boys have asthma so we do get them the flu shots. The peds office only gives them on Saturdays from 8-12, well they both play sports, so I just take them to the CVS Minute Clinic now. Bc they are under 18, I cant take them to a regular CVS or other place that gives them out.

DH is on his on and is stubborn so he probably wont get one

I've never gotten a flu shot. I think about getting one every year, but never do. I've never gotten the flu, so I may not have a proper sense of what I'm protecting myself from :p

We get them free at work, I always get it. No side effects and never got the flu.

DO NOT GET THE SHOT OR SPRAY PRIOR TO A DISNEY TRIP. Our 5 year old had a check up a week or so before our Disney trip and they gave him the flu spray. Yep, he got sick and actually missed the entire week of school prior to our trip.

You cannot get it form the vaccine. That is a myth. If he got sick just after getting the vaccine, he had probably already been exposed and it was too late.

I never got one either, until I got swine flu. I have never been so sick. Ever. I got a secondary upper respiratory infection and missed almost an entier week of school. DD got it and missed 3 days. My family gets the shot now.

Nope, although I do enjoy the annual hype.

Early in the season, there's the hype for everyone and their mother to get the shot immediately or else You Will Surely Die.

Later on, there's a shortage. Then the hype is that the young and healthy should pass on the shot so that the more likely compromised can have it. If you are young and healthy and get the flu, don't worry, you'll be just fine.

More vaccine is manufactured late in the season and the manufacturers need to get it sold. So the push resumes for the young and health to get the shot or they will Surely Die, even though the season is pretty much over.

Oh, and who knows in all of this if the shot is even for the strains circulating.

Funny, I was going to say the annual hysteria.

Never had the flu shot, never had the flu.

One of my children had Influenza B as a toddler and was hospitalized with it for a couple days. My children and I still don't get flu shots.

I get it every year. Not only do I get it for myself, but for those around me who are unable to get it. If I can help protect them even the SMALLEST amount then I am all for it.

I did get it at the doctor's office this year instead of at my pharmacy. I have had 2 instances of anaphylactic reactions to an unknown cause. As such, we decided to be safe and do it where I could quickly get assistance if needed.

Also, you can NOT get the flu from the flumist OR the shot. I wish people would stop spreading that myth.

I thought you could get a touch of the virus from the flumist since it is a live virus. Def can't get the flu from the shot.

From the CDC website.

Can the nasal spray flu vaccine give you the flu?

No. While the nasal spray flu vaccine does contain live viruses (unlike the flu shot), the viruses are attenuated (weakened) and cannot cause flu illness.

That said, some of the side effects include a stuffy nose, congestion, cough, and the like. So people might THINK it is the flu but it is not.
