The orange, and the liquid goodness squeezed from each one, are symbols of Florida. That's why some state welcome centers once gave out complimentary orange juice, greeting travelers on the Florida roads with an OJ toast. It became a tradition starting in 1949, as northeastern Florida "hospitality houses" grew into welcome centers near Jacksonville and Jennings. That free four-ounce cup of orange juice was a fun and tasty way of getting ready to commune with the state and it reminded everyone that most citrus fruit in the U.S. is grown in Florida.

But alas, travelers can no longer guzzle down Florida sunshine in a glass – and welcome center staff are hearing complaints about it.

"All day, every day," said T.J. Gilliam, assistant manager at the welcome center on Interstate 95 north of Jacksonville. Gilliam told the Tampa Bay Times that "some people aren’t that nice when they find out about it."

The bill to fund the free juice was vetoed by then-governor Rick Scott in 2015. Since then, the Florida Department of Citrus volunteered to foot the tab, but in recent years, just about all Florida budgets have been cut – including the Florida Department of Citrus from $46 million in 2005 to around $15 million today. That prompted state officials to no longer support fronting the $250,000 cost for the juice.

Visit Florida, which runs the welcome centers, has laid off more than 40 people recently and, as such, hasn't leapt across the table to grab the bill. Visit Florida has heard about it too, says the Times.

"No juice? Bummer," said one written complaint.

This is an outrage. I plan on writing a strongely worded letter to my local congressman about this even though I dont live in Florida.

Seems like something that its time has come and gone.

I know as a kid growing up we always stopped at the Florida welcome center and also used interstate rest stops along the way. As the head of my own family, we have never stopped at the Florida welcome center and never use interstate rest stops.

We time our stops around meal times and do not pack a cooler so fast food/restaurant stops instead of rest stops.

We used to stop at the Welcome Center on I-75 every trip, but found this out in November. Bummer!

I think all families are different. As a kid, we also always stopped at the Florida welcome center. As an adult, I've stopped there every time I've driven with my children into Florida, and it's something they look forward to on our trips there. We don't eat a lot of processed food, so packing a cooler and giving the kids time and space to run around is great for us. My kids will miss the orange juice there.

I'm 55 and we always stopped when I was a kid - then in 96 my parents turned to snowbirds, first time after the purchase I drove down with them and we stopped for OJ, fast forward to early 2000's, we would stop with our kids. Florida (all parts) is nostalgic for me, this makes me a little sad.

Maybe they can work out a solution, a donation bucket? or some rich person who changes residency to avoid taxes can just foot the $250k bill? Lord knows there's enough of them in Florida.

Awww, we always stop at the one on I75 coming in from Georgia.
It has become a tradition when going to Disney to stop, have a cup of juice & take a picture under the Florida sign, lol.
We stop at several rest areas along the way, not to pack a lunch/cooler, but because someone (usually me) needs a potty break.

It's been gone since at least the last week of October when we stopped there. I thought it was only temporary, bummer. However, I'd much rather see this cut from the budget than some other more essential program. Kudos to Florida for trying to live within its means!

We will definitely miss it but I totally understand.

If I want an orange 🍊 juice I’ll buy one. This doesn’t bother me one bit. The budget counts.

Blame the voters. They wanted the guy that turned off the free OJ. Maybe the citrus farmers will foot the bill? Maybe they should charge? Either option is better than nothing.

I loved the orange juice sample! And they had grapefruit juice too! But, on the bright side, that's a lot of single use plastic cups that aren't going to be thrown out now.

Not for nothing but the acres and acres and acres of orange groves in central Florida are being replaced with houses. Maybe they should be giving away houses at the welcome centers:rolleyes1.

Someone reported this on the 2000+ mile drivers thread back in the beginning of August. Someone else said it was still there in mid-June. So it went away sometime between mid-June and early August. :(
