Florida - you sure???

I've mentioned this before too, but I don't really like Florida either. I moved here from New York, havng grown up and spent most of my life in the city and then having lived in Wappingers Falls for 2 years before moving. My husband wanted to relocate with his job and he was in love with Florida.

There are some good points to living here, as there are with every place. I love being near the ocean (1 mile), I love being a 2 hour drive from one of my favorite places - WDW, I love the sunshine~y winters. What I do not like is the oppressive heat for so many months, the cookie cutter neighborhoods, the wildlife, and of course the hurricanes. In fact, in the last 2 years I have never been so afraid of the weather as I have been here. You could almost call it a phobia.

And I miss snow and the change of seasons. The leaves in Wappingers Falls and all along Rt 9W would change into such beautiful colors. It was magical. I would move back in a New York minute if I could.

So what is considered "South Florida"????

DH is considering Melbourne FL and that is in Brevard County where some trouble occurred with abductions, right?
Makes me nervous when you go on the web and read the latest headlines.

So if you had to move to Melbourne, where would you live? I have a 3rd grader and a Freshman in High School.

South Florida is really Jupiter/Port St Lucie south through West Palm Beach, Ft Lauderdale/Miami areas.

Pt St Lucie/Jupiter areas are also referrred to as the Treasure Coast.

Brevard county, Volusia, Orange,Osceola counties are all part of Central Florida. Melbourne is a nice area it sits South east of Orlando about a 45 min drive or so on a good traffic day. my florida.com can give you ideas on certain areas that you might want to consider.

we're not sure...we're positive. we moved to the tampa area from the chicago area. if we ever moved back, I'd complain about the weather, cuisine, traffic, etc. in chicago. the friends I had in Illinois absolutely hated living there as well. I'm not saying Florida is for everyone, it isn't. but neither is Delaware. it all depends on your lifestyle. bad things and good things occur in every part of the US. you need to find somewhere with a good balance. we have. :)

I have a daughter that lives in W. Melbourne and it is a great area.

I am so glad that I moved to Florida. I lived in Pittsburgh PA. When we had a sunny day in Pgh. they announced it on the news. It didn't happen all the time. Every time I have flown back to Pittsburgh or landed at the airport it has been a typical ugly rainy dreary type day. I don't miss those days at all.

When I first moved to FL. everyone said I will get back to you after your first summer. Well my first summer here was the summer that 3 hurricanes came right through our county. I lost most of my roof shingles in the first one, and sustained some water damage from the 3rd one. So I consider that a pretty good test and I still wouldn't move back North!!!! We have lived here 2 years now and it only gets better.

The heat in the summer here isn't much worse than the 95-100 degree 100% humidity days we used to get in Pittsburgh. At least here I have AC which I didn't have in Pittsburgh.

I do miss being able to drive 3 miles and find a shopping center but they are working on more stores in my area here. I don't miss having to time my driving so I didn't get stuck in major traffic. Here in Orlando I don't have to use I-4 to get where I need to go.

I sure don't miss the snow and the uncertainty of the weather. They would announce a major snow storm is coming and everyone would rush to the store. As the parent of teenagers at the time you told the kids you didn't want them driving or going out. Then you wake up and find the storm has passed you by with nothing.

I do miss my friends from Pittsburgh but it is amazing how many people came to see me now that I live in FL. :)

I live in an area that is close to Disney but I can look out my windows and see cows grazing in a large field along with orange groves nearby.

FL. may not be for everyone but we sure love it here. I should have done it years ago.

Well I hope many more feel as many on this thread and DON'T move here or simply MOVE back to where they came from!! :) Too crowded!!

As a native who will doubtfully move anywhere North of here (only South baby!) I love it....and I couldn't stand to be up North....it is like two different worlds...the pace alone would get to me, not to mention the many "other" things. I love Florida, the beach, the sunshine, the people. I don't care for hurricane season as my stress level increases twofold, but we get though it as anything else.....
Amen and Go Gators. And I don't know why others just can't say it's not for them, which I understand, without putting the place down. It's home to some of us, with roots here

This is exactly what I am facing right now. We are on our 16th day of clouds with no hint of the sun and we might see the sun for a little while today and then our next best chance of it is maybe next Tuesday. I kid you not. DH and DD have Seasonal Affective Disorder and they are both really struggling. Heck, I am about to lose my mind and I don't have it!

I can take heat and humidity--we have that here although I know not the extremes as in FL. I am sick of snow, I want to see the ocean, but mainly I want to see the SUN! We are looking at houses when we go down there in a few weeks.

Good luck with your search!

We moved to FL (from Buffalo, NY area) in 1995. I can't even tell you how much I LOVE it here! I have never once regretted moving. You couldn't pay me to move back to NY. I can't stand the cold weather. Even after getting hit by hurricanes Frances, Jeanne, and Wilma I still do not want to leave. I wake up every morning happy that I'm in FL.

:sunny:I love living in Florida!:sunny:

But here's the thing about Florida. It's been refered to as a Black Hole. Once you've been here, it tends to infect you. Even if you don't like it, you'll eventually come back.

As for me, I've left- moved out to Southern California, and then moved back to Tampa. Now I'm faced with moving to Northern California (possibly) or staying in Tampa, just not sure where we're (me and the BF) are going to end up.

.

If I ever went back to Florida, it would be during the "retirement years" with my soon-to-be-hubby.

We'd live literally minutes from WDW (I will whole-heartedly admit to truly loving the weekend as Diz - I never sickened of it, and never got bored...and the ones when it was just Jimmy and I?? Deeeeelightful! We both love it and miss those weekends) and we'd prolly work there part-time selling ice-cream or something mundane like that.

Now Southern California??? I  LOVE Southern California - although I havent lived there.

Moved here almost 31 years ago when I married and I love it here and would never move back to DC. And as to good Chinese food. WE have one place near us that has great Chinese food and 2 with lousy. We eat at the one with good food.

Honestly - I began to type out my reasons for "hating Florida" but this wasnt intended to be a rip-on-the-state, thread... it really was intended to be a "does anyone REALLY like it?" thread...

I had some honest opinions...thats what i was looking for.

One of the posters (forgot whom) mentioned it might have alot to do with where you are from - and I think she might be right. We were used to "city'livin" even though we're in the 'burbs.

It just wasnt for us. Cool thread though.... lots of interesting opinions / reasons, etc.

ETA: And just for the heck of it...this is where we lived: http://www.mpcommunity.com/

Meadow Pointe....We drove in to look at a home and I said nope...didnt even get out of the car. I didnt like the look of the community and it felt like tunnel vision as we drove to the back.

if you go back and look at the OP's previous posts, it's a large degree of Florida negativity and how Chicago is a much better place to be. I guess she was bored so she opened her own thread.

Chicago is a great place to be!! :teeth:

For the record, I don't think she was very negative about it, she just said she didn't like it.

Florida is an entire state. Not every area is the same. For those of you who like/don't like living in Florida, maybe it depends on WHERE in FL you're talking about.

Absolutely. I was born and raised in SW Florida -- on the gulf coast. DH and I got married after college and moved to Ohio and then to Atlanta, but never were really happy. We missed the water too much so we moved back. He is an avid sailor, I enjoy being out on the water, he loves to fish in the bay or the gulf, I enjoy the beaches. We both enjoy the cultural aspect here with the theater, etc.

There are definite things I don't like about Florida...hurricanes, traffic, living just far enough away from Disney that I can't go every weekend, and the mosquitoes. But, then again I couldn't imagine living where there were earthquakes or blizzards or gigantic tornadoes.

But the good outweighs the bad and it is home. DH is a realtor so we have to really love the area to be able to ensure that others will, too. But we really think of it as paradise in our part of the state. :flower:

You mean besides saying that our whole legal system was corrupt? And I agree that Chicago seems wonderful

parts of downtown chicago are beautiful, I wish we could import them. but if you look at the OP's history, it's nothing but slam Florida. to each their own, but let it go. :)

why oh why did you post this, you are scary me! Lol

I am a California girl, I love my state, we are very liberal state, no smoking is allowed indoors, it's beautiful (where I live), I'm attached to my state.

Dear SO was born and raised for 13 years in IL and then moved to CA and her parents just purchased a home 4 months ago in Florida and they love it, she is very close to her parents and wants us to relocate and purchase a home in Florida (very affordable), I've never been to Florida and I am terrified, of course I will go before I move. But I hate humidity, the rain, i'm afraid of the south, the way of life and not being accepted.

From all that i've heard FL isn't a very gay friendly state, in addition to that, we're black, the reason I point out that we are black because i've heard that people are very prejudice in parts of Florida, (not trying to offend anyone, but if other races hate us, and our own race hates us because they call us "white washed", where will we fit in)

ETA: And I hate hate hate mosquitos, we don't have them where I live and whenever I go somewhere that does and I get bit, I break out in hives and that for DAYS.

Don't be terrified. :) Florida really is a beautiful state and has a lot to offer. Depending on where SO's parents live and where you might be in relation to them I think would make a difference. Certainly there are parts of Florida that are more prejudice and seem like the south, but many places are diverse and open and accepting. I think that would have a lot to do with the tolerance factor and feeling like you fit in.
