We took a last minute trip to Florida to visit my MIL and SIL. We took our new pop-up and stayed in a very shady, "Old Florida" state park. No swimming(it's on a bayou--gators!) but we were near enough to the water to get some fresh breezes. It was very hot and humid, but nice and cool in the PUP. The bed's are divine--memory foam mattresses. Yummy... And going on a vacation without Christian, well, that's a guilty pleasure. Just to be able to come and go spontaneously, sleep in, eat out, go to the beach, lie around and read. He went to a respite caregiver and I'm sure he has had a wonderful time there.
Tuesday we got a photo text from DS23. The message was "I DIDN'T DO IT!" and the picture shows the 5ft wide, 14ft long wooden awning on the side of my house has fallen down on my precious Jeep!
Eep! Unfortunately, when the insurance man came out he deemed it the product of poor workmanship and they're not going to pay up. The idiot who put the awning on didn't bolt it to the house! Grrr. I'd sue him for damages but I happen to know that he doesn't own anything but his truck and his tools. His parents live across the street from us and they really have a time with him. He's about 32, alcoholic, in and out of jail, lives in a house his parents own, blah blah...yeah, we know how to pick 'em.
Actually, he did a great job on our porch--he was sober at that time--so I don't know what happened with the awning. Meh. DD17s bike was smushed--the wheels are crooked--and I think she's going to need a new one. I'm afraid the frame may be bent. Anyway, we've learned a lesson here...
It's kinda good to be home. I would have loved to stay longer in Florida IF we could have had time to spend at the campsite. DH's sister pretty much monopolizes our time when we're there. She cooks enormous amounts of food, which we are then obligated to eat and she wants us to spend every waking moment with her. DH pretty much gives in to her. To his credit, he did give me a pass on getting up at 7am to go see his mother in the nursing home. She doesn't want to see me, or DD either, so it's just as well. His sister is tiresome and I found myself getting irritable after about 16 hours. I think 3 days are just about the right amount of time to spend there.
On a good note--The beaches at Destin are fabulous. No tar or oil there! Tourism looks to be down about 30%, judging by the fact that the restaurants are not crowded and we nearly had the beach to ourselves. So, if you're going to Florida this summer, hit Destin! I'm sure they'd be glad to have you.
